He knows the playbook, he’s just not very good.
If his pay for this season was not guaranteed he’d have been released. Jerry Jones can’t stomach paying players no longer with the team. He was paid $4.5 million on the 5th day of training camp. Jerry is at least going to have him work on the practice field for the $800,000 he still owes Lance. As you say, “he’s just not very good” is why he will not take a snap as a member of the Dallas Cowboys in a regular season game the rest of his life.

The fact that he was paid pretty much assured he was going to make the team no matter what. Jerry Jones hates wasting draft picks. Although Trey Lance isn’t very good, he can run which opens up the door for him getting on the field for a play or two as a situational QB. It’s not very likely but I wouldn’t rule it out.

No matter what eventually happens with him - trade, long term backup, future starter etc. - Lance needs snaps in blowouts like yesterday.

Also, he has potential to be useful on special plays and inside the 10.

Cooper Rush can still be the starter in case Dak is injured for a few games. But we don't need to see him hand the ball off and take a knee when we're 26 points ahead In the fourth quarter.

We invested in him. We should use some game time to develop him.
What, exactly, would Lance gain from taking a knee or handing the ball off when up by 26 in the 4th quarter?

The point of bringing in the back up in that situation is just to not expose the starter to getting hit.

Of course Dak would have to get hurt and Cooper Rush would have to get injured or suck replacing Dak before we would see Lance take over the team. Lance wasn’t good enough to beat out Rush. However, there could be a point in the season where the Cowboys might try to use Lance as a situational QB for a play or two, to allow him to use his legs. It’s not real likely but it’s a possibility because he does run well. Like I mentioned he had 160 yards rushing in the preseason and rushing TD. He could be dangerous with his legs deep inside the red zone.
Lance cant get on the field at all as the 3rd qb unless Dak and Rush are injured in the same game.

He better NOT get hit taking a knee!

Whoever the backup is, they should be getting snaps in the 4th quarter of blowouts.

He said taking a knee OR handing off.

Regardless, it's just a token appearance, so whoever is at QB isn't gaining anything by being in the game in the situation he described

Lance could get on the field if the Cowboys have two QBs on their 45-player active list. A third QB from its Inactive list is permitted to dress for the game, but if they enter the game during the first three quarters, the other two quarterbacks are thereafter prohibited from playing. Which is why it’s unlikely the Cowboys use Lance as a situational QB unless they make him the backup for a game. The Cowboys are just wasting their time with him unless they can find a way to utilize him.

Trey can only help win that SB. He can also get a SB ring being the 3rd QB. However, he will be QB2 before the end of the season.
Yes, because QB3's get so many reps that he will somehow pass up Rush during the season.

You gain XP points for being on the field when a TD is scored.
Happens in Madden, which is the official provider of NFL football, so I know it's legit.
