You give up a potential building block .

I am with you, because of the money involved. But as far as the 2nd round pick being a potential building block...potential is indeed the key word. These are Dallas' last 10 picks they've made in Round 2:

Demarcus Lawrence
Gavin Escobar
Bruce Carter
Sean Lee
Martellus Bennett
Antony Fasano
Kevin Burnett
Julius Jones
Jacob Rogers
Al Johnson.

I'd have no prob giving the 2nd round pick. I wanna slap the Vikings for handing out that contract.

I go 3rd rounder at that's as high as it goes.

I agree with this, he's worth one 3rd-rounder, it's a fair price...

I disagree with those that are saying we shouldn't part with anything more than a 5th-7th round pick... This is Adrian Peterson, he does have some real value... He is not camp fodder, he's not just another body, this is one of the best RB's to ever play the game...

Age and other contributing factors mean that we should tread wisely, but still, this guy is only a couple years removed from a 2000+ yard season... Give me the Cowboys with Peterson/McFadden over the Eagles with Murray/Mathews any day all day...

Signing Peterson would give us a known commodity at RB, which would alleviate the pressure of having to hit on an NFL-ready RB in the draft... If we don't sign Peterson, then we might have to go RB in the first-round... Because while I love the McFadden deal for its upside, going from Murray/Randle to McFadden/Randle could very possibly be a significant downgrade for the offense...

Furthermore I'd prefer us to cut Randle, he's a knucklehead... Dunbar, I could take him or leave him... I am excited to see what this Ryan Williams can do... It's very interesting that he was signed immediately after the season ended for a decent little contract, almost as if he was somewhat of a priority for them... It's even more interesting that he reportedly turned down 10 separate offers to join other teams active rosters, opting instead to make far less money by staying on the Cowboys' practice squad... Maybe he's the Rolando McClain of RB's...

If he was rewilling to negotiate his contract, sure. The bottom line is that you eventually have to pay for talent. Just make sure not to overpay too much.

Baffling to me that anyone thinks a 30 year old running back, generational or not, is worth picks plus a monster contract.

Fact. Dude USE to be a beastly bad ***. Is he still? Who knows, but after sitting out a year and toting a ton of baggage I don't want to be the team to stick our neck out for this guy. Damn...make it stop.

Don't wanna slap the Vikings for the contact because if it wasn't so large AP wouldn't be going anywhere. It's APs only leverage for a trade.

You make a good point regarding the draft picks, so he might in reality be worth a 2nd round pick, but given all the factors at play, I think we would be overpaying if we parted with a 2nd...

Also, I think he would have to be willing to restructure his deal for it to make sense...

No one in FA could have an impact likinand beproductive for the next 5 plus years. Peterson AP could have on this team, not even close, common.
Assuming a RB from this year's draft can replace Murray is wrong, and believe me I like the process and what the FO is doing but AP is a special talent.

If this was a weak rb class then sure, but there are players that could come right in to contribute for years. Peterson is a high price to pay for someone who would likely be a decling player. If we were mostly set at defense I may agree with the trade but not for our 2nd round pick or for the money we would pay him. Later pick sure you definitely have to consider it for a 3 and later.

It would be huge if we can get Peterson, all depends on the pick and money. Just read a write-up on him at nfl.com about him having a chip on his shoulder, etc.

How many here want to give up the pick for him?

lol....

You dont exactly lose what Peterson has in one year. He got himself in shape
I disagree. It would have been cheaper just to keep 26 year old Murray and we saw how they felt about that.

Thats for Murray. No way I pay that much for Murray. They were right to let him walk.

And to be honest, I think the FO and a lot of others thought we had a decent chance to get Murray back, until Philly came into the picture. So, that didn't go the way the FO wanted it to go......

I think you pay for AP.

I hear you. I think in most cases you pass on these kind of trades.

But in this particular situation. This case. I think we almost have to try and get him. If it takes a 2. It takes a 2.

We get AP, and we will barrel over the NFCE and most likely the NFC....,, Thats how much I think of this deal. I don't have to guess if AP is good enough. He is. He is order of magnitudes better then Murray or any Rookie coming out of the Draft. Yes he is 30 but we could platoon him with DMF.....keep them both fresh. Hell, DMF will be 28......???

Lets get that SB. Lets see Romo in a SB.... Maybe 2....beating NE, and ,,,ummm Pittsburgh or Baltimore......

Peterson does not solve our inability to put a pass rush on Aaron Rodgers for the entire second half of the divisional round. Plus, Peterson in his prime is as good as anyone ever was. Him in 2013 was not better than Murray in 2013.

There isn't a gradual decline when running backs hit 30. Even with the Hall of Famers it is more of a fall off a cliff than a slow burn.

It keeps our defense off the field longer though. We do need to improve the defense as well though, I agree with you.
Hardy and Peterson get this team to the NFC Championship IMO.

Agree 100%.

Peterson turns us into the most feared offense in the NFL. We'd most likely get a bye and a home game in the playoffs.

Peterson goes against the Cowboys' current plans of not overpaying nor making a FA splash. I don't see it and Dallas would be hypocritical if they did it..... Or so I'm told.

I 100% agree with you.

We get those two pieces and not only are we as good as last year's 12-4 team, we're better.

At this point in time, we're markedly worse than the team that finished last season.

We already got our cream of the crop signing. His name is Darren McFadden!

Yes, right now it is looking real bleak. The only positive I can think of is Lee is coming back but will he even training camp? We can't trust him.. or rather his body at all.
Last year our defense wasn't quite good enough to get us all the way to the championship game, so it HAS to improve considering GB and Seattle are just as good if not better than last year.

So we have to ask ourselves, are we trying to get to a super bowl now or are we prepping to get there in the next 5 years? If it is the next 5 years, then carry on doing what you're doing and save as much money as possible. If we are looking to get there now... then it is time to spend and get a couple of players that can take us over the top.
AP and Hardy are those players. After a season like last year, I can't fathom them not trying to go out and get a few players to put us over the top. Strange man.
