Let's all just get it off our chest; Carp was a bad draftpick

Everyone wanting Carpenter to contribute immediately....who else down there could have done that? Think Manny Lawson could have handled the strong side? I'm not sure. Would Lawson be useful in Nickel? Keep in mind, Carpenter has been picked as a nickel LB with Burnett, and we have rarely gone into the nickel in the preseason. I cannot think of a single first round talent down there that was left that would have contributed immediately.

People, this is what it's like to be a talented team. On talented teams, rookies aren't expected or even desired to come in immediately and make a large contribution. Talented teams fill out the roster, address possible trouble spots, and continue planning for the future. Greg might be our starter now, but our LB corp is set for the next 8 years. You don't like Carpenter? ok. But there was no other pick to make.

Who says he will be just solid? He could very well turn out to be a great LB It is early in his career so it is hard to say how he will progress add to that this teams talent level is the highest it has been in a long time on defense so if we are getting to the point where a rookie can't step right in and take a vets job I don't see that as a bad thing. Heading into camp we were not sure a guy like Ellis could do the job, heck Ellis did not know he could do the job so looking for a top prospect at LB was important for the team. The way things have worked out with Ellis has been a pleasent suprise and Carpenter comes in with a lot less pressure on him to be a starter this season.
 
LMAO the guy hasnt even played 1 down in the NFL and you are already labeling him a bad pick. What a joke!
 
If it's all the same to everyone else I think I'll give Carpenter an opportunity to actually get on the field in a real game before making any wild declarations about him...good or bad.

and remember, I meant a trade down for either or both of the players I mentioned.

Also some guys perform better when the lights are on during the regular season. I can't help but try to be optimistic, I am getting that heine puckering feeling now that the first game of the season is upon us.

Carp backs up Ayodele. Fowler backs up James.
 
Way too early to tell right now. I think for him to live up to where we picked him he'll have to be a good strongside backer in the 3-4. Since we have Ellis and Singleton over there right now, I don't mind Parcells seeing if he can play some ILB as well. I'm not really sure who we could pick there. Darryn Colledge would've been way too high there. Santonio Holmes can't stay out of jail. Perhaps we could've landed Davin Joseph. I don't think Lawson was the answer.

Sorry I missed one of 46 posts. If you felt so strongly, why didn't you just put it up front? Typical maybe, coulda, woulda types mushy thinking isn't really a trait seen much in winners in football or life.

Who would we have traded down with? Who wanted our spot? Then, when we traded down to get these players who wouldn't have seen the field, and NE took Carpenter, and he won DROY, how much would you have bellyached then?

Our 1st rounder looks like he may not even dress for some games early on.
And I didn't see ANYTHING from him in the preseason.

Doesnt seem like a bad pick at all...

The only times you have rookies starting are when they are replacing scrubs...

We've drafted Carpenter, and he is going to be a staple in our lb corps for years. Ellis won't for example. And we still have Kevin Burnett.

It's called depth.

Carpenter and Burnett will still be focal in the nickel.

I never said we should have or could have done what I wished.

I stated what I hoped we would have done.

If it wasn't possible - and by all accounts, it wasn't - any whining about what you wished we would have done is pointless. It's even more pointless, when you're whining about picking players who would have seen less playing time than Carpenter is going to see this year. There was noone to trade down with, there was noone better to pick, there was no player that fit our system better. It was the right pick. Time will tell whether or not it was a good pick. Our team is good enough that we don't need rookies contributing right away. That's a good thing.
 
I do not agree with the original post. I will admit that I did not want to draft Carp but that's because I wanted to trade down. I would have rather done that but it didn't happen. I liked Joseph better then Carp but I wouldn't say it's a bad pick. Give the guy some time. Lets see what happens. You can't go wrong if you invest in LBs in a 34. That is my opinion.

And who did you trade down with ...what team was going to give you the trade picks you figured would be fair in order to get the players you mentioned?

Aren't Carp and Burnett are on the first team nickel? That's a pretty important package that gets on the field about 40-50% of the plays.

traded down to 32 for the last pick in the 2nd round and our actual draft went like this:

1st (32) Bobby Carpenter
2nd Anthony Fasano
2nd Pat Watkins
3rd Jason Hatcher
4th Pat McQuistan
5th Oliver Hoyte
6th Sam Hurd
7th EJ Whitley
7th Miles Austin
