INDY. Because they got lucky twice.

PITT isn't too bad. Though they did go through Maddux and I think another or three before Rothy.
IND was the only team I could think of.

Yeah it's kinda rough on the QB market.

I remember he was a 57% passer at MSU and not beloved by team mates. I remember I was glad he didnt land here, and no I wouldnt kick the tires.
Amen. Football Outsiders has a projection system for evaluating college QBs in the draft. It's mostly based on stats, though it does factor in the round they're projected to be drafted in. Here's what it had to say before the 2016 draft:

Connor Cook
Cook projects as a below-replacement-level NFL quarterback. His basic stats in 2015 (56.1 percent completion rate, 7.7 YPA, 24 TD, 7 INT), in an era when college quarterbacks routinely complete more than 60 percent of their passes, recall other NFL flops such as Jake Locker.

Cook did not even face a particularly strong set of opposing defenses. The defenses Michigan State faced ranked No. 51 in our estimates. Moreover, Cook had the benefit of playing with the most NFL-caliber teammates of any prospect in this year's class. Those teammates include All-America left tackle Jack Conklin, likely a first-round pick in the draft this year. That Cook failed to do better in college despite favorable circumstances makes him a long shot to succeed in the NFL despite going in the second round in many mock drafts.

Dak Prescott
The projection rates Prescott far ahead of Lynch and Cook, prospects currently expected to go earlier in the draft. Often compared to Tim Tebow earlier in his college career, Prescott did not have as much NFL-caliber talent surrounding him, even with projected 2017 first-round wide receiver Fred Ross. Prescott's projection here accounts for that, as well as his performance against the toughest set of opposing defenses (No. 14 in FBS last season) of any quarterback prospect in this year's draft.

QBASE does not predict Prescott to be a likely NFL success. But his 45 percent chance of being at least an adequate starter gives him enough upside to make him very much worth a Day 2 draft pick.

I have nightmares about the reality that if Oakland hadn't saved us from ourselves, we'd be trotting out a crappy Connor Cook as our starting QB right now.

Romo would still be QB. Sure, we'd have to bring him out in a wheelchair, but he's still know how to escape all pressure but that one hit each year that breaks another part of him.

Replace "year" with "game" and you have it exactly right.

We really don’t have that much history drafting duds because we haven’t made much of an effort to draft starters. Haven’t really drafted QBs much at any point, but Aikman/Walsh was the last time we used a 1st round pick on a QB. Since then Quincy Carter (admittedly a big dud) was the only real chance we took at getting a starter.
This belongs in the top all time most ignorant posts.

see this is one reason i favor paying Dak now,our inability to scout QBs,even Dak was drafted as a backup. We have a long history of drafting duds and being associated with failed QBs for a long time since Romo emerged.

Exactly. That was a close shave. People that attack Dak need to remember how close we came to drafting Paxton Lynch and this bloke.

QBs prioritized over Prescott that year..

Paxton Lynch
Connor Cook
Kellen Moore (Dak only got his shot when Moore was hurt in camp)

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart.

Truly. And we've had him on the cheap to this point while the Rams and Eagles have paid millions as well. But that's not appreciated either.

I appreciate that this was the biggest mistake this franchise made in decades. Not taking advantage of the Dak rookie contract window.

That year we got Dak was really weird. They wanted Lynch and Cook over him. And then there were times where people were saying Showers was getting more reps than Dak. Not sure if that was just exaggeration or if it was in fact true. Kellen Moore at one point was higher than him on the depth chart too. But people have faith in them to get a better Dak for some reason.

What???

In 2001 the Cowboys drafted Quincy Carter. Since then they have drafted only 2 QB's: Stephen McGee (2009 4th round) and Dak.

Where is this "long history" you speak of? Spinning FA QB's something every franchise does not just the Cowboys.

Yeah but there was far more quarterbacks that came in here who they expected to develop. Henson, Hutchinson, Weeden.......

We expected to develop Weeden? No way we were that dumb, right? Weeden was already old when he came into the league, like 28, which means he was 32 or so when he got here.

Yeah, 4th round picks aren't guys you cut. Some other team will take them.

It's funny. Some people worry about us cutting 7th round JAGs, and others think we could have snuck Dak onto the PS.
Sometimes I think these folks can't be serious at the stuff they say.

Also the first preseason game Dak played in against the Rams was a complete revelation, the story afterward was already that Dak was a steal in the 4th and that he was a starting caliber QB. And that was after only one preseason game.
Exactly, whoever thinks we could have snuck Dak onto the practice squad is full of it and can't be serious.

I get that but what are odds we would have had three QBs on the active roster. Again, remember Romo was the starter and they'd already named Moore as his back-up. Hell, at that time Dak was just a 4th round pick trying to make the team.
No way he would’ve been put on the practice squad. As a 4th round QB, he’d have been picked up immediately.

Yeah I remember Conner Cook. I was a dummy and wanted us to draft him. I never even heard of Dak Prescott. I'm happy to say that I'm a moron and got that one wrong. Thank God we drafted Dak. Think about how bleak our future would be this year. No way Romo would have lasted this long, I wish he could have, but he would have retired this year or last year and our future would not be looking good. I wanted Cook, some other guy with a long last name and the dude that Denver drafted. All of them sucked.
