Production is always part of the picture. We've seen players who have won the underwear olympics in plenty of years and then done nothing in the pros. Judging prospects is part measurables and part production. Ideally, you don't want a player who falls short in either, but generally after the first round, the players available either fall short in one or the other. He will get the chance to prove whether it was the system, the QB, etc., that caused him not to produce compared to other tight ends. The measurables are there for him to be more than what he showed at Michigan. We'll see how he does.
My point with this thread is because the questions about him have to do with receiving, if he is more of a blocking tight end than a receiver and Luepke is more of a receiving fullback than a blocker, then that combination could be interesting together. Not that I know if Luepke will even make the team or Schoonmaker will end up beating out Ferguson and Hendershot for playing time.
I didn't mean to make those who feel defensive about Schoonmaker think I was slighting him. I don't know how good or bad he'll be. I just know the knock against him concerns receiving because of the production numbers. We'll see if it means anything concerning his play or just means that we got a nice all-around tight end because Michigan didn't use him in the passing game as much as he deserved.
