The Cowboys would probably have given him a new 3-4 year deal after this season. Why choose to do this now?

If he sits out the season, and the Cowboys don't fall apart in his absence, he's probably not getting a new deal.

His base is now low because he got 10 million of his base in March in an upfront payment.

It’s disingenuous to say his base is low this year.
His game checks come from his base, right? Since they already gave him most of it, he doesn't stand to make much by playing.

In that sense, sure. But to say he has a low base ignores the reality that his first "game check" was actually a $10 million payment in March. He's going to make the exact same amount of cash this year regardless of whether he was restructured or not (well minus the fines now of course).

Honestly, F Martin in this. We front loaded the crap out of his contract like he wanted and now he is being selfish and greedy.

More than likely his fine will be forgiven when he gets his extension.

This isn't a big deal at all.
If he continues to hold out, even if he’s extended it may just cover his fines. He’s not going to get paid much more money if any.

I am not sure why this myth keeps getting pushed around that somehow the Cowboys got bent over a barrel here and gave Martin everything he wanted.

The front load was as much a gift to Martin as it was a want by the Cowboys. The length of the deal was also pro-Cowboys as they love longer term contracts (look at Tyron) because they love hacing the years to spread the cap hits and restructures. Shoot, with Martin, they even created a couple of dummy years to dump cap hits in the future.

For all we know, when Martin signed that deal, he wanted a shorter deal but gave the Cowboys the longer term to help the Cowboys with cap hits with the assumption that after 4 years or so, they'd redo his deal. How does anyone here just assume it's Martin that's the issue here? Maybe Jerry is reneging on a wink wink deal with Martin from 4 years ago?

Honestly I think this is all just a play by Martin to express to the team his urgency for a new deal. This will all get figured out

The problem now is, what is his incentive to play since his base is so low? He can just skip the season. You already paid him.

The money goes to a fund that supports ex-players. The CBA mandates the money goes into that fund.
'KingCorcoran' - I just did a couple of reads about the league fines.
My understanding is that all gameday infractions = uniform violations, plus penalties on the field during games - those resulting funds go to these two programs:
1) NFL Player Care Foundation
2) NFL Players Association Player Assistance Trust

Also, some of those monies can go to NFL-backed charities for health initiatives and disaster relief.
Player holdout fines, such as those currently being assessed to Martin, can go to other charities.

The CBA mandate means Martin’s fine will be paid. The notion that Jerry Jones will not only acquiesce to Martin’s compensation demand, but will heap on an amount that after taxes covers his fine, regardless of where it goes, seems unlikely. Owners must spend a minimum of the salary cap over any four year period. They do not “pocket” any money they don’t pay players. Guards, like running backs, are not going to get the big money anymore. Some owners may be dumb, but they’re not stupid. I get Jerry has his detractors here, but I’m reminded of a sign my grandfather had in his “den” (he drank a lot of Crown Royal there), it said “If You’re So Smart Why Aren’t You Rich”. Jerry’s rich.

I would not give in to a what will be 33 year old RG. If he doesn't want to play, trade him for a late first round pick.

Some people don't make $500k their whole lives, even in the US
$50k per year for 10 years.
$25k per year for 20 years.
The people who don't make $500k in a lifetime are choosing not to do so.
They aren't victims. Just sayin'.
