Because its not that simple. You have to make contracts match. And the teams that have the salary to trade to get Luka are teams like the Suns with Bradley Beal or Heat with Jimmy Butler...AD was the best player they can get. Now I do wonder why they couldn't get more draft picks from the Lakers.
Do the Lakers even have picks left? Seems like them, Phoenix and a few teams have charged their draft credit card up for the foreseeable future.

Yeah and going to the Finals I give them their due but that probably was our ceiling with Luka. I still don't even know how they got that far with that type of basketball.
IMO they could have won it all with a Luka/Kyrie core, but they needed to add a legit 2 way #3 and more 3D guys that could defenend and eat off of Luka and Kyries action. Their D was good as far as the regular season and beating mid tier playoff teams, but it wasnt good enough to slow a legit championship caliber team

Whoever has the #1 overall probably has the space to add him. Its more that Luka would be a rental for one year just to win 40 games
It depends. The worst teams right now are the Raptors Hornets, Wizards, Blazers, Pelicans and Jazz...there is not one guy on these teams as good as AD. Well Lamelo but I don't think Hornets would ever ship out Lamelo. Its just full of these Markanen, Brandon Ingram, Anfernee Simons type guys and none of these teams Luka would re-up with. Its like the Kawhi for Demar Dorezan type deal.

Ok AD is not a bag of chips. AD is a top 10 player. They traded Luka a top 5 player for a top 10 player and a first round pick. I agree its unbelievable because Luka is a big name but as far as talent wise AD is a better overall player. The things he does on defense Luka will never be able to do. And while the things on offense Luka will never be able to do he has a potent offensive game. AD is a stud. Its all about how healthy will he be.
AD is not the bag of chips, he's the half eaten In & Out burger.....lol. It's a 25 yo superstar entering his prime for a 32 yo injury risk, AD is great, but Mavs could have and should have gotten more back on a trade of this magnitude. Mavs got the worse end of this deal and it's not even close.

And even then, none of those teams had the talent the Raptors did. Say you whoever trades for Luka out of that group still keeps Markkanen,Ingram, or Simons (which would be doubtful) thats maybe a 5th seed and the 2nd round

Problem with that is Luka. Luka would never agree to that. In the NBA its the players that have control. Luka is unrestricted after 2026 and would just leave. He would even still get a supermax because whatever team he is leaving would sign and trade just to get something back
Traded players aren't eligible for a supermax contract.

AD is an injury-riddled big as well. He probably won’t make it past 35, where at that time Luka won’t even be 30 yet.

Smells like new ownership meddling. Not being good on defense is no excuse, he just made the Finals and 2 WCF in the last 3 years. The only reason you make this move is because you think it elevates the Mavs to NBA champions right now. The window is so much smaller after this.

Now it’s Kyrie’s team? That’s another element to this that’s not in the headline. Everyone is talking about LeBron+Luka, but no one is talking about the fact AD’s ppg the last 5 years have been that of a solid #2. When was the last time you thought, “Kyrie can be the top scorer on a championship team”? Dallas has 2 awesome #2 options. That’s never worked out

I guess the moral of this story is that it's another great day to be a Celtics' fan. :muttley:
As a Celtics fan I don’t agree. The Lakers get to reboot with a 25 year old generational player that they can now build around. As I hate the Lakers it just seems like they always get gifted with something. Either a trade like this or every free agent wanting to play there.

I disagree. PJ is a legit 3 and D guy IMO. If they could've added AD then I could see that but they weren't gonna get a AD type without giving up Luka.

Damn that’s a good point. They still might be cashing those past trades….
