Mel Kipers perfect 3 round mock draft

Unless O.J. Howard mysteriously dropped to our pick in the third round, I'd agree. Heck, I'd even take a flyer on Sidney Jones if he were still there. I would, however, like to add another pass rusher, another corner or a safety with that third pick.
When I read all these mock drafts..

I see so much defense going early in the draft..

I think we are going to see a big offensive talent drop to us.

Which begs the question..

If another OL drops to us or a WR..

Would we take best player on the board or reach for DE or CB because it's a need?

I don't think we have the conviction to do that. We would take the best available CB simply out of need.

Given their last few drafts, I am more inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt here. I suspect if someone like Corey Davis fell to 28 and the Cowboys had him high on their board, they'd take him or trade the pick.

In a heart beat! Ramp up the strength of our team and fill in with players in the later rounds

"He's (Everrett) got all the tools. He could end up being one of the top pass catching tight ends in the league. There is question about whether he can handle a full playbook, but I think that is overblown. Cut him loose and let him make a bunch of plays." -- AFC area scout

I generally view Kiper as a decent Ravens local draft guy and nothing more but this is an A+ mock draft to me.

There's are much bigger "fish to fry" than a TE who will play a fraction of the time. Witten isn't going anywhere this year and our offense barely uses two TE's.

From a roster perspective, who goes?

Witten, Swaim, Gathers, Hanna? Are you definitely keeping four? How much will the rookie even play among this group?

Now how much sense does it make to use any of your picks in the top 3 rounds on the guy?
And who are you taking off the field to give this rookie TE snaps?

Dez? T-Will? Beasley? Witten? Zeke? Not happening.

Give Gathers another year of seasoning to see if we can hit on a lotto ticket. Address TE next year.

He's just about as good as it gets. His status just puts a target on his back. But he's plugged in and his mock drafts have a very solid track record.

"While general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, Tobin gained some notoriety during the television broadcast of the 1994 NFL Draft after being criticized by ESPN analyst Mel Kiper for picking Nebraska linebacker Trev Alberts with the fifth pick in the draft, instead of Fresno State quarterback Trent Dilfer."

I think the real question is: Who the hell is Trev Alberts?

Everyone loves to put Mel down, but he's the best at what he does. Everyone else in the mock draft industry would happily trade places with him. His mock drafts have a great track record and he's as plugged in as it gets at that level.

Ehhhh, I don't think Mel is all that accurate. I believe there was a website who tracked this stuff and even McShay was more accurate than Mel.

In the end, it's entertainment. I don't take anything these guys say as lock, stock, barrel.

McShay is accurate as well. They go back and forth, but both guys are among the best. Last year Mel got more picks right, but McShay had lesss overall variance.

You're certainly right not to take anything as gospel. It's an inexact science, to say the least. I just think it's funny that he's held to a different standard than the field; especially when he's much more plugged in and accurate than the year round mock sites that people use as a consensus.

I love how there is somehow 6 pages of discussion on this in 2 different threads...

The 1st 2 picks would be an A in my book (Moreau's tackling ability scares me a tiny bit)...I don't know enough about Everett. Can he function as an inline blocker in our system? Seems more like a hybrid WR/TE

I doubt you're the only one who didn't get around to watching much South Alabama football! I sure as heck didn't, but from what I've read, he's actually a pretty solid blocker. From NFL:

"...but it is his willingness and ability to block that separates him from other "matchup" tight ends."

"Blocks with anger and is prone to longer engagements than most blockers on perimeter."

More of a move TE or H-back. He does go in-line sometimes and does okay, but hardly a good enough blocker to be what we need yet.

Barnett alone would make this an A for me.
