I have the feeling Jerry will overpaid him... honestly, i hope he don't, i mean it's not like he's coming out of a stellar season... and check his knee, please!

Not when Marinelli Jerry and Stephen have all said you don't draft 1 tech in the 1st and that is what Jernigan is in this scheme.

Jernigan can easily be a 3 in this scheme. He can also play the 1 and DE. That's his value -- versatility. And he is a much better pass rusher than Floyd was.

What is up with everyone determining how good a defensive linemen is by how many sack numbers he has? You guys did this with Anthony Spencer for far too long as well.

How about tackles? Forced turnovers? Don't they count, or is that inconvenient for the argument?

Melton has decent numbers. He does not have top tier numbers.

He's "second tier" because of coming off a ACL injury which is the ONLY reason we are even in negotiations with him. If healthy, he's first tier and one of the best free agent pick ups out there.

I would include the off the field issues as also a factor in making him second tier.

That's what people said about Floyd, but Marinelli saw him as a 1. His 3s have to be quick twitch, pass rushing fools.

First in run stop percentage...

Second in sacks between 2011-2012 for 4-3 defensive linemen....

47 Hurries in the 2 years.....
14 QB hits.....

In regards to 4-3 DT's.....you can't find many better.....

Sacks don't tell the whole story. The guy is a force in the middle.

.......fair enough. I'm not too sure. I think people as evident by the attention he's getting don't mind the off the field issues he's had. But personally, i'd agree. I do believe that would make him 2nd tier for me. But if we're factoring in on the field play? He's 1st tier.

Thank you. It's amazing how people want to spout off without knowing the facts.

How do you figure he is such a good pass rusher. Look at his stats. Go read his profile on nfl com. They have him as a run defender only and a NT in a 34. Jernigan played on a loaded defense and had average numbers. He is slow off the line. Doesn't look like a Marinelli under tackle to me. That's just imo. Yo each his own.
Now Jernigan looks more like what Chicago is looking for. Tucker was the DC under Del Rio at jacksonville and that the type of defense he is trying to setup in Chicago. They are moving away from the Tampa 2. Jernigan is a better fit for that defense than donald is.

Jernigan is a good player just not a 3 te h in this scheme.

That could very well be a smokescreen, and there's nothing preventing them from drafting a guy to play the 1 if they think he can also be a solid 3-technique. Really it just comes down to whether or not they see a two-down player or a three-down player.

They said that last year after the draft and again this offseason. Marinelli has never drafted a 1 tech in the 1st ever.
Only time will tell. Right now I say they pass on Jernigan in the 1st

Watch out 4.5 is crazy numbers. All of 1.5 more in the ACC vs the SEC and on a much more loaded team. Sorry b ut that doesn't mean anything.

The point is that Jernigan is a better pass rusher than Floyd was. He may not be a full time 3-tech in Rod's scheme, but he could easily be a rotational 3/DE and starting 1. RM didn't nix Floyd because he would be a 1, he nixed him because he saw Floyd as a 3-4 NT with almost no pass rushing ability.

Just because you think Jernigan is a better pass rusher doesn't mean marinelli sees him as that much better as one. Nfl.com also thinks Jernigan is a 34 NT.

Time will tell buy I don't see Jernigan as a successful 3 tech in this scheme and they have stated several times they don't believe in drafting 1 techs in the 1st.

Sounds like he wants to be here. His agent used Seattle as leverage. Which is not the greatest thing for us since we will most likely overpay for him. I would be very cautious seeing how he is coming off major surgery. Usually DLineman with that kind of operation decline much quicker.

Just be glad he didn't use Washington as leverage. Seattle at least won't inflate his price far above what should be paid.

I think this is the one signing Dallas really wants and has been saving its money for. I'm sure the hope is the team can get him and still have money left to spend on a quality end, but I think Melton's the priority.

Wondering what #Cowboys could offer Henry Melton. I talked to one agent today who said they're trying to backload long-term deals.
12:51pm - 16 Mar 14

If true…. that'd make sense. Melton wants long term security, Dallas can't afford to pay him now, but will have more space in 2 years (if they are smart). He's only 27, so a 4-5 year deal may work out well for both sides.

We'll see.
