Twitter: Melton in Dallas meeting with Cowboys did not sign with Seahawks

Maybe with the signing of Melton we go from the last ranked defense to the second to the last ranked defense.Losing Ware and Hatcher is taking 2 steps back and signing Melton is one step forward. You are still one step back after its all said and done. Ill definitely take him though and hope the stars line up just right in the draft.

Yeah, for sure. It's going to be tough to replace those 6 sacks from Ware and all of the times he was single blocked and generated zero pressure.

I agree with that. I would like enough left over cap space to at least attempt to sign Ayers. Is Ayers a "stud" DE? No. But I would have more faith in him than virtually any DE on the Cowboys rosters including Selvie.

I don't think signing Melton will have any impact on an ability to sign Ayers should they want to. Ayers' isn't going to cost much considering the little interest there is league wide in him.

Let's see, resign 32 year old Hatch or sign 28 year old replacement at a lower cost? That is actually BETTER against the run.....

Not that hard of decision

From what ive seen over the years, once a player has left the city he was visiting, he is gone. Im sure these talks have heated up by the agent calling and saying thanks we will take your final offer into consideration.

4 yrs 30 mil 12 mil signing bonus will probably get it done.

I would be so heartbroken if signing Melton meant no Ayers, Alex Carrington or Pat Sims. That would just be unacceptable.

Melton isn't a middle tier FA. He is the top DT this year. DT gets drafted high and paid well.

In this free agent market, he's a second tier free agent. The first tier has largely been cleaned out already, except for the franchise tagged players.

They could probably sign all 3 after the draft. for vet mins

Which is why if those are the alternatives, you just go cold turkey on free agency and do not pretend what is left right now at that position in free agency is going to help much.

The other 31 teams are not idiots.

They will not draft a 1 tech in the 1st. It been said for the past year by all of our front office guys.
This is why they didnt draft Floyd last year.

And every player and situation is different, they didn't like Floyd but they may like Jernigan who offers more pass rush upside.

Are you going to write off every DT whos not in the mold of Donald as a 1st Round option going forward? Or is it safe to think different players may be more favorable than others?

Kind of foolish to think otherwise. This team doesn't have one quality starting DL under contract, insane to be picky going into this draft. You have a good player fall into your lap, you take him.

He's the top DT and a top 10-15 free agent. He and Hatcher were the only two A- DTs on polian's list. He has multiple suitors and likely multiple offers. He's a top tier guy.

I would rank Hatcher higher than him. Melton never had a season that came close to what Hatcher produced this past season. In fact, Hatcher's 2012 season was on a level with the best that Melton ever put up, and that was in a 3-4 defense as an end.

Coming off of a knee injury, and averaging around 2 tackles per game and less than 1/2 sack per game in a defensive scheme geared toward isolating him on 1-1 matchups makes him a solid player, but not a top tier guy.

He's "second tier" because of coming off a ACL injury which is the ONLY reason we are even in negotiations with him. If healthy, he's first tier and one of the best free agent pick ups out there.

What is up with everyone determining how good a defensive linemen is by how many sack numbers he has? You guys did this with Anthony Spencer for far too long as well.

Not when Marinelli Jerry and Stephen have all said you don't draft 1 tech in the 1st and that is what Jernigan is in this scheme.
