Have a Lab Pit mix the big guy is very affectionate he sleeps by my bed or on me if I let him Our calico bobtail plays with him they are best buddies and she is bigger than our 2 chihuahuas Her Grand momma was my pet until someone reported her She was 100 % American Bobtail My wife was really scared of her at 1st and finally realized she was tame She was a lil bit larger that a Chow Chow was tame bout 35 lbs. I got her to be friendly with Chicken legs I proved she was tame to animal control but they took her She now lives in a wild life reserve I really liked her hated them taking her

You don't have ANY idea how much I needed this thread right now...it's making me realize that I'm not alone. We had to put our little dog down 3 weeks ago, and me and the wife are just gutted beyond belief. I am home alone during the day, and look for ANY reason to be out of the house....and then when I do get back home, I just lose it. My prayers are with anyone ever having to go through this...not sure that I can ever go through it again.

My heart goes out to you and your wife. Two days before Christmas 2020 I had to say goodbye to my 19yo dachshund. She was my only companion and I was lost for months. Every spring I plant cucumbers over her grave. She loved them.

Had to put down old pups, that's what I tagged my 19-year-old with at even a young age, but she lived to 19 so name was appropriate.

Have had 5 dogs in my life and I loved all of them, every one of them had a unique personality of their own but have to say Old Pups was the most intelligent, she was amazing.

She had free range and would give herself "self walks", what I used to call them, where she would hang out with me in the garage when I was working and not paying attention and she decides to leave and go on a self-walk for hours sometimes by herself in a residential community with busy side streets and always staying on the sidewalk and returning unscathed every time.

All the neighbors knew her, she would stop in for visits, she knew more neighbors than I did.

Old Pups was genius status, not sure if I can ever have a better one.

Just so everyone knows, genius status is above elite status.

Loss of a good dog can be devastating. I’ve had some awesome dogs that I was closer to than most humans
I grew up on the family ranch where I live to this day. Things are done differently in the country.
My Opa and my pops had no problem shooting their dogs when it came time.
Myself, I never have been able to do that and never will. I tried once. Simply couldn’t do it.
I’ve had to shoot cattle and horses for different reasons.....and even dogs that get dumped, turn wild, pack up and run cattle
But my dog. Nope. Not happening

Truly a statement that today's societies just don't get. Seems we are kinda in the same boat where dogs are dumped out here on a regular basis and either become a nuisance, starve to death, or become coyote snacks. When they are a nuisance a man does what he has to do and it's never easy even then. I tried to put one of mine down years ago and had to get a friend to do it for me (nice basset with bone cancer). I've put friends dogs down for them.

My last one I had to say goodbye to (2019) was an 11 year old lab with hip dysplasia and he broke his hip. Vet did it. He was a great dog and loyal companion (and a rescue). Helluva thing! But he had a great life running the woods with abandon and following me for untold miles on my 4-wheeler, swimming the ponds and creeks. That I can look back on and say he had a full life !

Yeah Micah, it's tough but part of sharing life with a dog.

When I was much younger, I had a Dachshund named Duke that lived to be 15. He died in 1985. Haven't had a dog since because it hurts too much when they pass away,

Wow, that sucks, brother. I'm sorry to hear it.

I appreciate it. Brutal to have to do that 2 days after Christmas. It was even more brutal on the family that we believe this stemmed from an “accident” at the vet 8 weeks ago. He apparently had fallen off the table at the vet, and they had given us mixed stories but he had hit his head.

He just was never the same.

I can’t even stay focused at work. And every time I come home, it is killing me inside that he’s not there to greet me like always.

Just brutal to deal with. I’m not a guy who cries, but I think I shed enough tears this week for a lifetime. Just hope that he knows how much our family cherished him.

Help us get the W tonight, Toby. He was always by my side when watching Cowboys games.

Ugh. I need to leave this thread…
