If she believes it is true it would not register as a lie. Most serial killers and other deeply disturbed people pass these things. My brother-in-law's father is a schizophrenic who believes the Government monitors his thoughts. He would pass a lie detector test because he truly believes this. I think it was the guy who killed Rebecca Sheafer who passed a lie detector test that he was in a relationship with her.

This woman could have been bought a drink in a bar, developed a fantasy and now believes it to be true. We don't know. But the lie detector test is not fail safe.

The device is wrongly referred to as a lie detector. It is actually a polygraph. It measures breathing rate, pulse, blood pressure, and perspiration. If you are calm and you do not get flustered or nervous during the polygraph you can pass the test. Shizophrenics, psychopaths, and sociopaths can pass the polygraph much easier than the average. joe.

I just don't believe this story, just as I didn't believe Nina Shahravan's story back in 1996*. That story smelled from the get-go, and this one does, too.

*That woman (I'd like to say something nastier, but the filters will just block it out) cost us a Super Bowl appearance that year, in my opinion....and it was personal for me because the Super Bowl was in New Orleans that year, and I was so ready for that!!
:tantrum: :explode: :grrr: :bang2:

But I digress.

It's easy to accuse this man of this crime because people BELIEVE he has a history of this. Yes, he has had a history of criminal behavior related to substance abuse, but not rape. Likely, people only heard of the accusation in 1996, because it took place while the Cowboys participating in the playoffs. I wonder if the fact that the charges were dropped even registered with most people who only heard the original accusation.

So much for espn.com not reporting on civil suits. It's on their website now. ESPN is full of ****.

It's the reason this emoticon exists on this site, I'm certain:

I agree it's probably someone hunting some money, but obviously there seems to have been an encounter. The mere accusation could end up costing him thousands in dollars and even more in personal (family) losses. I, like others, actually thought he had transcended that kind of behavior....I hope, for his sake and his family's, that I wasn't wrong.

But I wonder if none of this would be happening now if Irvin hadn't put himself in a position to be extorted in the first place?

Chatting up a girl in a bar, then taking her up to his room for drinks (if that is indeed what hapened) is just asking for trouble. Why are such accusations never lodged against Emmitt, Woodson, Troy, Moose, etc.?

Because they don't put themselves in that position to begin with!

Exactly. Isn't it funny how these totally fabricated charges from lying women aren't ever made against Demarcus Ware, who is much more famous and has tons more money than Michael Irvin?

Kind of like how Ware's friends don't leave their pipes in his car.

This is why I don't like Irvin and never have. I know that's sacrilege and will probably get me stoned around here, but it's how I feel. The guy has always struck me as a total con man and I don't know how he keeps fooling so many people. But he caught a lot of TDs for us so I guess it's all good.

Why is Irvin such an easy target?

Read the last paragraph of my post #79

There are enough verified stories around of Irvin not being all that good a guy to not like him, and I get exactly why you think he comes off like a con-man. But it's pretty obvious that Irvin's flamboyance and his history of drug and sex addiction is the reason why these stories surface about him and not about Demarcus Ware. That doesn't mean the stories are true.

The rape stuff, in particular, seems unlikely. I can't imagine Michael Irvin even today has problems pulling women. He's assertive, fit, and rich and a known playboy.

That said, we'll see how this all plays out. Speculating about a player's ability or performance on the field is one thing. Digging in and demonizing the parties in advance of having all the information available in a case where a violent crime or an attempt at extortion may have been committed is another.

No, to be clear, I'm not saying he raped this woman. Not at all. In fact, it sounds fishy to me just like it does to a lot of people.

But still, there's a reason why there is some incident or another involving Michael Irvin every few years. I would submit that his actions, not his old reputation, create these stories.

I think there should be jail time for false accusations....assuming it can be proved. Oh wait, nothing has to be proved to smear the accussed, so maybe I should recant.

Let's go folks! Throw Irvin under the bus, claim he is guilty, and bash or "back the blue" when it concerns the police.

Just saw this on the crawl at the bottom of Sportscenter.

The guy kinda made his own bed with that nonsense in 1996, but man. This woman made accusations when this happened in 2007, the police investigated, found no evidence to back up her claims, refused to pursue charges AND she signed a waiver of prosecution.

So now, 2+ years later she files a lawsuit ? Ridiculous.

Yeah. To be clear, I didn't meant to suggest that you thought a rape occurred. I was just riffing off your point about Irvin putting himself into these situations. And I agree with you that he opens himself up to these accusations with his behavior.

Just got a text alert that Irvin is out on ESPN radio. Using iPod to post this, so can't do too much in the way of finding and/or posting an article to verify right now

they cancelled his radio show over this.

Screw espn, seriously, I will never ever have anything to do with them again.

I loved that show.

I wonder if they are pissed off he is doing TV at NFLN and this was just the excuse they needed.
