It's been poor for a long time. That doesn't mean that there is no value to be had.

Wish player for player trades were more common in the NFL. For future movement, unless your some old guy on your last legs, young guy wanting huge money, had team success, or a lockeroom cancer, your pretty much stuck.

That isn't how it worked with the great Cowboy qbs of the past.
Really. Thats how it happened to every Cowboy QB. Roger replaced Graig...Graig replaced Don....Danny replaced Roger... Troy replaced Danny....thats how it works. Tony is finished and will never play for Dallas again...the same as Roger...Danny...and Troy.

I think Romo is worth a king's ransom in draft picks but even I see this as Mickey being the shill that he is for the organization trying to drum up a bidding war for draft picks. They would be better off just going dark and letting the other teams hear crickets and wait for them to come calling. You can't buy a Tony Romo QB at K-Mart.
Actually you can http://www.kmart.com/search=tony romo fathead

I don't see how we keep Romo on the roster as things currently stand.

A. You have to open the QB job up to open competition. If you don't, other players start wondering why they have to compete for their jobs but others don't. Garrett has said many times he wants competition up and down the roster, so all of a sudden that only applies to certain players? Not going to fly, if you keep Romo then he competes with Dak in an open competition for the QB job.

B. Romo is the highest paid player on the team, making roughly 40 times what Dak makes. Not sure how you hand Romo a clipboard and tell him to go sit on the bench. As for Dak, not sure how he is going to feel looking over to the sidelines watching Romo eating nachos and playing Pokémon Go while making 40 times what Dak makes.

C. Romo currently has the highest cap charge of any player in the entire NFL at almost $25 million, so making him a backup would be unheard of. Can anybody name me one team in the history of the league that paid their backup QB $19 million in salary with a cap charge of $25 million?

This would be the most unique QB situation in the entire league and we would be doing something no other team has ever done. Can it work? I really don't see how, but I have to admit it would be fun as hell to watch!!!

We're not keeping him, but--and I know I'm in the huge minority here--I don't think the idea of letting him compete for his job in camp is farfetched. Yes, Dak's the QB of the future, but after the way Tony handled 2016, I can't see how he can really complain about a challenge in camp. Not after the bullet Tony took last year.

And I think the players would play for either guy, too. It's one think to sit Dak in the middle of an 11-0 run. It's another to pick the best QB coming out of camp and ride with him into the regular season.

I know the team won't do it. I know the risks in letting it happen. No matter what, if they were to do it, they'd have to then trade or release Tony the next year and give the team over to Dak from there. But in terms of what's best of the Cowboys, what's best for Tony, and what would be pretty fun to watch for camp and whoever wins the starting job in the regular season, I wouldn't mind it. There's no shame in Dak sitting for a more experience vet to get his last shot at a ring. And Tony already endured the shame of being benched for a rookie signal caller.

What I don't think is realistic is keeping Tony and not letting him compete. That's just not the way the guy is wired.

All that said, I know it's not 'done'. And I know it's not going to happen. I wouldn't mind seeing it play out, though.

Very good post my friend

the most unique QB situation in the entire league
those are the key words, so maybe a unique solution is what is needed, not the standard solution?
A. open competition , I think this is a fallacy, as the same guys almost always start, if they are perceived as starters,
they always start even coming off injury's or having a injury.
B. Dak makes the same whether romo is here or not,he focus's on what he needs to do, and not other players.
C. unique QB situation says it all...... well had romo not got hurt it would be the same as now, or if romo had
been put back in when ready last year.
But dak had the great year, so now they want to hand dak the keys to the kingdom, or already have.

Mickey might be the ****tyest writer in sports reporting history. You can also count on him starting at least one sentence with the word "Now" in every article.

Read JJT sometimes. Actually don't...he's unreadable. Randy Galloway was pretty awful as well, bordering on illiterate.

At this point, I just want something to happen. Traded, released, FO announces he's staying on board, what have you.

The wait and anticipation is the worst part of this.

Can't trust Mickey and his pom-poms.

I don't doubt Dallas would like to keep Romo. I doubt Romo is interested in staying unless he's given a fair chance to compete for the starting job.

It's patently stupid that the Cowboys won't open the competition. That's supposed to be what sports is about.

This seems far-fetched.

I guess if none of the 3-4 teams that Romo would really like to play for are interested in taking the risk (health-wise), staying here is slightly more likely.

I kind of think there's still another tier of less desirable (but not crappy) teams that Romo would consider before he considered staying.

His top choice by far is to stay and compete fairly for the job. But that appears to not be on the table.
