Mike Fisher on 105.3 Says Wednesday Night

Those backs are likely to buck the trend and go in the first. At which point you're paying them darn near what you're offering Murray.

Not really. Assuming that they get slotted somewhere between picks 10-20, they'd average between roughly $2M (for the 20th pick) and roughly $3M (for the 10th pick) a year on a 4-year deal. If the Cowboys were to pick later than 20th (let's hope) it would cost them even less. We have people claiming $4M a year isn't nearly enough to get Murray signed.

Anyway, I agree that you don't necessarily want to burn a premium pick to find Murray's replacement (if he can't be signed at an attractive price).

Lol Murray isnt a special back. He is good not great ceretainly not even close to Emmitt Smith.

Well what makes a great back? Emmitt would not have been Emmitt if it weren't for an oline and the team willing to give him the rock. Did Emmitt have 5 straight 100 yard games?

I think Murray is worthy of a reasonable contract that is fair for both sides. I would love to sign him and get this over with because I think he deserves it. We would not be 4-1 without him. Yeah lets let him walk without giving him a reasonable contract. Its something losing organizations do all the time and would not surprise me if fans want to get back to 8-8.

I said it in another thread and I'll say it again: Murray averaged 180 carries through his first three years. He has a lot of tread on his tires. Let him run.

Totally agree. If he can remain healthy I think he will be productive.

But staying healthy is the problem with Murray.

A full healthy season for him would be out of the norm. The norm for him is missing time during the season including in his college days.

It would be hard to give a big contract to a RB, who is injury prone, in a contract year and expect him to continue to be healthy every year when it is against his norm.

Even if you put in clauses in a contract to cover missing games due to healthy issues you still take a spot on the roster away from someone who might be hole when they get injured. Ala Sean Lee...sure they put things in his contract to help with the money/cap but at the same time when he is gone that is a very good starter and then we have to search through a number of players to try and find someone who can come close to his ability to cover for him...luckily we got McClain this time.

Thus I said IF he can stay healthy. Yes him having a history of being injured is a concern. Sometimes players do shake the injury bug and its hard to tell if Murray can or not. Despite being injured, I still think he deserves a contract that is reasonable. I say reasonable because I want him to be paid fairly and Cowboys don't have to break the bank on him.

I for one don't think we can just plug and play any runningback and get the same results. If thats the case why are we still giving it to Murray? Why can't Randle break tackles for long runs like Murray? I think defenses are apt to stack the box more causing some mismatches with our receivers. They don't do that with the other runningbacks we have.

I disagree.

I know the stats. Murray isn't touched until the second level.

But go review the game if you DVR'd it and watch against the Texans how he moved the pile forward. Seldom, and I mean not often at all, this guys gets shoved back.

I remember the spares we've had that looked brilliant in pre-season and stunk on ice when the real games start. I also know the coaches sees these guys daily.

If this was just anyone can do it, you'd see the other guys a lot more often.

i love a rb who goes down moving forward. and murray does. no doubt murray is a very good back, but you can't pay a top elite wr, ot,qb and runningback. something has to give. i expect they would move up some if they are close but i would'nt go much over where we are with murray. love the player but you have to keep in mind we have lots of free agents and we have more coming every year. you have to look down the road on contracts.
but one thing i love about murray is he moves the pile and most rb's don't

If this is true then either Jerry, Stephen, or both, have lost their minds. Murray is the focus of this offense now and is on a record pace. You cannot just plug and play just anyone and expect even close to the same production. Sheer lunacy. You would think they learned their lesson when they lowballed Emmitt in '93. SMH

1993 is a different era than 2015. It depends on what Murray wants. If he wants $8 mil a year, then he's history

This says different.

People keep saying this. Those backs are likely to buck the trend and go in the first. At which point you're paying them darn near what you're offering Murray and you burnt a premium pick to do so. That's not very smart.

I don't know about that. Are the signing bonuses for a first-round running back higher than the signing bonuses for a premier veteran running back who hits free agency?
I think now that the salaries of rookies have been brought back to earth, it seems to me DM would get a bigger contract in free agency. He's probably looking more at the signing bonus than the contract itself.
I would think the Cowboys could pay a rookie less money than they could to spend the money on resigning DM, who will command a hefty price on the open market.

Murray would get more. But we're talking 1 or 2 million a year and usually those first round contracts are guaranteed pretty heavily.

AT that point i'd rather pay Murray a bit more and save that 1st round pick for an impact player...preferably a DE

I would just pay him and Dez now (front-loaded if possible). In a couple of years you're going to have to pony up to keep this OL together.

So you do think Murray is better than Emmitt Smith? To prop Murray you minimize the feats of one of the greatest Rbs of all time and ceretainly the best Rb in Franchise history. Wow, all I need to know.

Murray lacks vision at the line. I've pointed it out before. He misses holes reguarly. Watch him play it's easy to spot. He is decent making people miss in the open field and physical. He had had issues with injuries in past and turnovers this year. He isn't worth a big contract and could be replaced. I have
No issue with the team if they let him walk.

I wonder sometime if the O line is motivated by certain running backs. Murray is always gaining yards and running over people and i think his level of effort motivates those around him. Emmit had the same effect. Just because they are pros doesnt mean they are giving it 110 % for everyone. I think we overlook the dynamics of the whole package .

Do I think he's better than Emmitt? No. But who really cares. Emmitt no longer is playing and Murray is. Right now I would take Murray over a retired Emmitt.

All I know this team would not be 4-1 within him running the ball. He is averaging 5 yards a carry and that is nothing to sneeze at. I don't think its because of JUST the oline. I ran over 5 yards a carry during his rookie year as well and thats with a crappy oline. So this idea that we can plug and play anyone to run behind this oline seriously needs a reality check. If that would be the case why isn't Randle getting more carries?

Murray is a very good back. He breaks tackles and turn one yarders into big plays. Sure he misses the hole once in a while. So did Tony Dorsett. But to say his average is reaching while his averaging 5 yards a carry is really reaching.....

We know Murray's workload is going down going forward. Which likely means Randle's workload will increase accordingly. By the end of the year, we will know if the success of the running game is a function of the o-line or Murray. If Randle averages 5 yards per carry by year end, you can bet Jerry won't budge from the current offer. If Murray leaves, Randle will take over and Jerry will draft another RB in the fourth or fifth round next year.

If Randle struggles however, look for Jerry to spice up Murrays current offer

I agree but I'll change one thing with your comment

If Randle struggles we are more likley to draft Gurley then up the offer to Murray

No....Jerry and Stephen have come to there senses....no more bad contracts.....don't over pay. Build this team thru the draft....the OL is making holes that numerous NFL RBs envy.....a lot of RB's will love to come run behind this OL.....Cowboys have all the leverage. What would Murray play like with Jet, Dolphins, Raiders, Bills, Lions and other NFL teams....this OL is making him a superstar... Murray is the same guy Cowboys have seen for the last 3 years...whats the difference....3 first round picks on the OL.....not the RB.
