As I stated, there is a difference between having heard Elvis sing a song or seeing him in a movie then actually knowing the "name" of the Song he is singing or the "name" of the movie he is in.

Go back and look at my post, all I said is that I don't know the NAME of any of his songs.

I never said I had never SEEN or heard the guy before.

let me ask you this, mickelback

if I can name more Michael Jackson songs than Elvis songs, does that make Michael more iconic?

I don't think it does.

But let me ask you this. Why does it seemingly offends when someone says that their personal knowledge of Elvis is slim?

it doesn't really offend, kind of insults my intelligence a bit

my knowledge (of Elvis, don't be smart) is hella slim too, but I can name a couple of his songs and I know the basic facts, and I didn't grow up around anyone who was into Elvis

I can't believe that living in America, and being as old as mick, that he was completely shut off from the World that he can't name one Elvis song

I doubt anyone is offended. I for one am amused at how little is known of him and I am not a fan.

I hate soccer. I will not watch it. I guarantee you I have heard of Pele. Post a picture of him in a suit and I can probably still tell you it is him.

I find it remarkable that people are this "misinformed."

It shouldn't insult your intelligence just like seeing some of your posts doesn't insult mine. :)

Where I see the disconnect is that people don't get that you can have heard something on the radio, see it performed on TV, and not know the name of it...even years later. That's not an impossible feat. There's one song by the Labelles that I've heard a ton of times, and absolutely love, but I don't know the name of the song. It makes me mad that I don't know it.

Mick isn't even saying he doesn't know the basics of Elvis, just that his knowledge of MJ far outweighs Elvis. That said, I think he even said way back on the first page that Elvis would be remembered as more iconic.

It really comes down to knowledge and awareness. I know of a couple Elvis songs, but only because I saw him sing them in a movie, but that's pretty much the extent of it.

Hos, I know I can count on you to be a great trivia partner as you have a ton of knowledge about some of everything. Seriously, I'd really want you to be my partner. We'd win almost everytime. But not everyone's like you, tho.

I've got a friend who's very active in church. She's not into pop culture, at all. When I talk to her about almost anything related to pop culture, I get the blank stare of ignorance.

There is all kinds of stuff I don't know WG. For example, I didn't know this until right now.

My apologies that this is wikipedia again. Like I said earlier, it's fast.

During filming of Paradise, Hawaiian Style, Presley returned to his Bel Air home. The Beatles were at the end of their second U.S. tour. Colonel Parker had been negotiating a meeting for some time, through The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein, though Parker simply saw it as a valuable publicity opportunity (he had apparently even tried to get the group and Presley to perform the closing song in the same movie, but The Beatles' film contract precluded it). The group arrived in Bel Air amid a flurry of elaborate security arrangements made by Parker at 10pm, on August 27, 1965.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-Guralnick-1999-211-183 The visit lasted about four hours. Many of Presley's closest and trusted friends— members of the so-called "Memphis Mafia"—were present, including school friend and bodyguard Red West, Marty Lacker, Jerry Schilling, Larry Geller and their girlfriends.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-Guralnick-1999-211-183

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-Guralnick-1999-211-183
Biographer Peter Guralnick maintains that Presley was at best "lukewarm" about playing host to people he did not really know, and it took a while for everyone to feel comfortable.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-Guralnick-1999-211-183 Paul McCartney later said: "It was one of the great meetings of my life. I think he liked us. I think at that time, he may have felt a little bit threatened, but he didn't say anything. We certainly didn't feel any antagonism. I only met him that once, and then I think the success of our career started to push him out a little, which we were very sad about, because we wanted to coexist with him."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-elvispresleynews1-184

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-elvispresleynews1-184
Marty Lacker recalls Presley saying: "'Quite frankly, if you guys are going to stare at me all night, I'm going to bed. I thought we'd talk a while and maybe jam a little.' And when he said that, they [The Beatles] went nuts."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-Memphis1-185 The group told stories, joked and listened to records. The five of them had an impromptu jam session.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-elvispresleynews1-184 "They all went to the piano," says Lacker, "and Elvis handed out a couple of guitars. And they started singing Elvis songs, Beatle songs, Chuck Berry songs. Elvis played Paul's bass part on "I Feel Fine", and Paul said something like, 'You're coming along quite promising on the bass there, Elvis.' I remember thinking later, 'Man, if we'd only had a tape recorder.'"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-Memphis1-185

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-Memphis1-185
Ringo Starr played pool with two others that night; George Harrison "looked to most of the guys to be stoned" on arrival and allegedly smoked a joint with Larry Geller and talked about Hinduism. Parker played roulette with Epstein.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#cite_note-Guralnick-1999-211-183 However, Guralnick claims The Beatles were, overall, disappointed by the visit. They still reciprocated with an invitation for Elvis to visit them, but only some of Presley's "Memphis Mafia" accepted. "John Lennon went out of his way to tell Jerry [Schilling] how much the evening had meant to him" and asked Schilling to tell Presley, "'**** hadn't been for him I would have been nothing.'" Schilling says that when he told Presley he did not say anything, but "just kind of smiled.

Im sure Elvis is more beloved and what-not. But Michael Jackson was the bigger talent.

I dont even like Elvis' voice, nor have I sat through an entire song.

Im sure I could name several if I tried though

Presley's early music and live performances are credited with helping to lay a commercial foundation which allowed established black music acts of the 1950s to receive due recognition. Performers like Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard, came to national prominence after Presley's mix of musical styles was accepted among White American teenagers.

Rather than Presley being seen as a white man who 'stole black music', Little Richard argued: "He was an integrator, Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music." Al Green agreed, saying; "He broke the ice for all of us."

It has also been claimed that Presley's sound and persona helped to relax the rigid color line and thereby fed the fires of the civil rights movement. In the late 1960s, composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein remarked: "Elvis is the greatest cultural force in the twentieth century. He introduced the beat to everything, music, language, clothes, it's a whole new social revolution... the 60's comes from it."

What the hell would Leonard Bernstein know right?

Other celebrated pop and rock musicians have acknowledged that the young Presley inspired them. The Beatles were all big Presley fans. John Lennon said: "Nothing really affected me until I heard Elvis. If there hadn't been an Elvis, there wouldn't have been a Beatles."

John Lennon too?

I'm not understanding why it is so far fetched that many people don't know much about Elvis. I'm like Mike I can't name much of his stuff either. Yes I have heard of him, but that is the extent of it. I was in daycare probably about 4 when he died. I grew up watching the Jacksons Five and listening to MJ all my life, not Elvis. I lived in Texas the majority of my life too.
