I’m sure fear of lengthening the game is a component. But I’m also sure that the League, and the Officials’ Union, don’t want added scrutiny.I agree. It’s absurd that penalties can’t be challenged. That tripping call on Hendershot, for example , was an easy overturn. I think the NFL is concerned about the length of games. You can imagine how every play there is a missed call or a botched call. It would totally screw up the flow of the game. I personally like the current challenge flag system but they need to extend it to make more kinds of calls reviewable, or just auto review any penalties more than 10 yards.
I would be fine simply giving the ability to challenge within the confines of the current challenge parameters. I don’t want a ton more stoppages that disrupts the flow of the game. Shoot, I think that it was near the end of the 3rd quarter and the early 4th quarter Saturday night that there were 2 plays ran in about 6 minutes of clock time. It’s not as noticeable watching at home on the tv, but it definitely is live at the game.
