The day of the NFL draft there was a rep from the Cowboys in the home town of Randy Moss. He truly thought he was going to be a Cowboy that day.

I truly believe we would've won a SB that year if we pulled the trigger on Moss.

I heard that Garret was high on Dalton and Kapernick but they were picked earlier than the Cowboys could land them.

The media "talked" Jerry and Co. out of Moss...I will never forget what he did to Dallas in the Thanksgiving game that year...3 catches for 163 and 3 TDs...

Jerry got Deion Sanders to spend some time with Randy Moss before the draft to see what he thought of him. Deion called Jerry and said Randy was a good kid and he would be a mentor for him and suggested to Jerry that he should draft him.

John Garrett and another scout were standing on the table to draft Moss according to Bryan Broaddus. Garrett said something about we're not drafting Boy Scouts here we drafting football players. Chan Gailey told Jerry he didn't want any parts of Randy Moss and that was enough to sway Jerry. Bryan Broaddus talked about it on Talking Cowboys before.
But Jerry doesnt listen to coaches.

Those Cowboys teams were lacking in several areas. Dallas wasn't going to win a Superbowl with him. Aikman was gone shortly after Moss came into the league. Within 3 years of Moss entering the NFL, Dallas started a run of 3 straight 5-11 seasons. Could Moss have made them go 6-10 or 7-9 during that spell? Maybe, but that isn't enough to warrant regretting passing on him. Plus he was able to get away with smoking weed in Minnesota. He would have certainly been busted by the league if he was getting high in Dallas.

That certainly involves a lot more speculation than the simple fact that he's one of the greatest to play the game and would have helped our team greatly; certainly more than Greg Ellis.

Its easy to daydream about Randy Moss at this peak wearing the star, but there is a very real chance he would have imploded in Dallas. That draft was right after the "White House" sex and drugs scandal, if Moss had been the supertalented rookie coming to Dallas the local media would have dug through his garbage and hounded him day and night. It would have made Hollywood Paparazzi look like Buddhist Monks.

Also a big part of the rookie transition for Moss was his older brother Eric played for the Vikings and hand carried him through his rookie year. In Dallas it would have been the opposite.

I wanted Moss at the time (badly), another factor in drafting Ellis was that it was a huge position of need at the time. The Cowboys had targeted Leslie ONeil for that DE spot and thought they had him, but at the last minute he signed with St Louis. It was one of the things that always made me hate drafting for a position of need over BPA, but that said, there is no guarantee Dallas would have gotten the early career attitude Randy Moss rather than the late career attitude Randy Moss that "played when he wanted to".

Occam's Razor

You want simpler. Dallas finished 6-10 in 1997 and scored 304 points. The Vikings went 9-7, scored 354 points and made the playoffs. He improved the Vikings team in 1998, but still could not lead them to the Superbowl. He would have helped Dallas, but not enough for them to win it all or even do that great in the post season. And then once Irvin and Aikman called it quits it would have just gotten worse even with Moss still around. The simple fact as that Dallas was not a good team or organization during that time period. Moss wasn't going to make Dave Campo and good head coach.

That's still not simple, a lot of assumptions in that post.

The 1998 Dallas Cowboys went 10-6 with Troy, Emmitt and Irvin still all there. They had NO ONE to line up opposite Irvin. With Moss, who we now know is one of the greatest to play the game at his position, we would have most certainly beaten the Cardinals in the playoffs.

As far as the Campo/Parcells years, Quincy Carter, Vinny Testaverde, Drew Bledsoe, and yes, Tony Romo would have all benefitted greatly from having Randy Moss to throw to.

I'm sorry, but I refuse to take the position that everything that could have gone wrong with Moss would have if he came here. He would have helped this team and his QBs far more than he would have harmed them.

Thought I read somewhere that they were close to picking Joe Montana, but ultimately passed because they already had Danny White.

Sure they could have beaten the Cardinals, but that is about it. They weren't winning a Superbowl with him and the chances would have still continued to get worse. Things just went down hill after that 1998 season and that defense wasn't too good. They couldn't get to the QB. Moss doesn't make them a better at rushing the passer. Dallas was ranked 18th in sacks in 1997 and 25th in 1998. The Vikes were ranked 12th in sacks in 1997 and 19th in 1998.

Quincy Carter still would have been bad with him at receiver. That is an easy, simple assumption. Same with old man Vinny. And would Moss have stuck around long enough to even play with Bledsoe or Romo? He left the Vikings after the 2004. he could have left Dallas, too. I didn't see him help out the Raiders QBs who were comparable to Carter, Testeverde and Bledsoe. It is not some big assumption. We can see what happens when Moss is placed in a similar position to what he would have faced in Dallas. He folds. He quits on his team and doesn't propel them to much. Dallas wasn't as good as Minnesota in 1998 or 1999 and by 2000 Dallas was a truly bad team. Dallas wasn't winning a Superbowl with him.

Jason Garett was offered the HC position by the Ravens in 2008. He turned them down to remain our OC and they hired John Harbaugh. They have gone on to appear in/win multiple playoff games and win a Super Bowl. We have not.

However sad this post is, I think it wins the thread.

Most people know this but in 2009 Dallas wanted to draft Max Unger but Seattle jumped them and took him.

Heard it several times before that after Unger went off the board they were targeting Pat White with that 2nd rounder but Miami snagged him right before us. We caught a break there but then again we could've had Shady McCoy had we stayed there and made a pick.
