Here's one that got away:

Back in 1995, I don't remember if it was the scouts, or coaches, but one of the sides wanted to draft this not so fast RB to back up Emmitt, but since he wasn't that fast, they decided to go with a faster one named Sherman Williams.

The not so fast RB they passed on in the 2nd round ? Curtis Martin.

If the Cowboys had won Super Bowl V with Craig Morton at quarterback (and they almost did), Morton probably would have been cemented in as the starter and the Cowboys likely would have traded away Staubach. Morton was good, but Staubach was great. Morton was more of the classic pocket passer that fit Landry's system. It took Landry time to accept Staubach's scrambling, improvisational style. Morton was later traded to the NY Giants for a 1st round pick, which was later used to draft Randy White. Captain Comeback may never have made his mark in Dallas and Randy White may have helped someone else have a great D. We may have won Super Bowl V with Morton and may or may not have won another one in the Landry era. Maybe Staubach would have been the one traded to the Giants (shudder at the thought).

In July 1971 Duane Thomas was traded to the Patriots for RB Carl Garrett. It was reported that Garrett was asked about playing for the Cowboys and he responded with " it will be nice to run behind an offensive line", implying the Patriots OL was not very good.

When Duane Thomas was told to get into a three point stance, he refused and the coach ordered him off the field. The Patriots then claimed he did not pass his physical and the trade was nullified.

Duane stayed with the Cowboys for the 1971 season and they won their first Super Bowl.

Carl Garrett was returned to the Patriots to face their OL.

After Sean Payton became New Orleans' head coach in 2007, he and the Saints offered us a 3rd round pick for Tony Romo. We obviously declined.

He definitely doesn't need to listen to Deion.

DEION WOULD BE 100 FREEKIN TIMES the GM that Jerry is.

If fact, this entire thread is a tribute to HOW STUPID and MORONIC jerry jones is!!!!

This thread is for all the moves that Dallas almost made, or inquired about making that never came to fruition. Also for fun tidbits that you guys/gals know about, post them here.

People obviously know about Sean Payton offering a 2nd for Romo and the Big Tuna liking Merriman over Ware and wanted to take Spears with the 1st pick.

One of Romo's early career highlights was in 2004, when (as the third string QB) he rushed for the winning touchdown with six seconds left in a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. Elevated to the Cowboys' #2 quarterback in 2005, Romo had strong showings in the 2005 and 2006 pre-seasons. In the 2006 off-season, Sean Payton (now head coach of theNew Orleans Saints), offered a third round draft pick for Romo, but Jerry Jones refused, asking for no less than a second round draft pick. Romo eventually took over the first-string quarterback role from Drew Bledsoe during half time against the New York Giants on October 23, 2006.

Granted it's Wikipedia, but almost positive it was a 3rd.

Dez Bryant could've been a Baltimore Raven but Ozzie Newsome turned it down. Jerry had a deal in place with New England to swap picks and jump Baltimore who everyone thought had interest in Dez , but right before the deal was final, Bill Belichek called Ozzie Newsome and told him they had a deal with Dallas and wanted to see if he wanted to get it on the trade. Newsome declined to get involved in the deal and New England made the trade with Dallas.

Belichek almost screwed the deal up by calling Ozzie when he knew Jerry was trying to jump Baltimore for Dez.

John Elway almost traded to Cowboys for Danny white and other parts but Irsay blew it up

Agreed, I heard Gil Brandt talking about this once on Sirius. Said that the Boys desperately wanted Elway and thought they had a deal but it all fell apart at the end when Irsay decided against it.

Jimmy wanted James Francis, but the Bengals picked him and we took Emmitt.

Actually his first love that year was Junior Seau, Then he was gunning for Francis. When Francis was taken, he saw Emmitt falling and traded up to get him.

Parcells trading out of Steven Jackson and taking Juilus. I did hear that Parcells actually liked Kevin Jones in that draft.

That is the draft moment that stands out above all others for me. Believe me I have flipped out when Dallas has made questionable/terrible moves during the draft many times, but I went absolute ape feces when they announced that trade. I kept yelling (to no one in particular) "You need a RB! The best one in the draft falls all the way down into your laps...HOW DO YOU NOT TAKE HIM?!! WHAT THE (*****) ARE THEY DOING?!!!" I may have even sprained something when I jumped up during my rant - lol. I was just utterly flabbergasted. Ah memories...

This is what I've heard as well. I used to hear "2nd rounder" but it seems like, over time, we hear about it having been a 3rd rounder.

Oh, it can get worse. Try actually being AT the 2004 draft. I waited an entire day only for Dallas to pass on its franchise RB.

In 2009 Dallas wanted Unger but Seattle jumped ahead and took him. We were stuck with Jason Williams in perhaps one of the worst drafts in NFL history for a team, 12 picks 0 starters remaining and outside of Williams I don't think any of them are still in the league. You almost have to try to be that bad.

Well, they did try. They literally said the roster was "set" and when they telegraphed the Unger pick and got jumped, they did what they have done many other times they lost out on a player. They panicked. The whole idea behind that draft was to supplement special teams, which Jones has presided over two such drafts.

Cowboys were gonna take Tatum Bell if he was still on the board in the 2nd rd but Denver took him like two picks ahead of Dallas. Julius was the rb coaches pick. I forget his name but he played for Bill with the Jets.

You can thank Maurice Carthon for Julius Jones.

The day of the NFL draft there was a rep from the Cowboys in the home town of Randy Moss. He truly thought he was going to be a Cowboy that day.

You did not enjoy the decade plus of Greg Ellis and his perpetual whining?

Those claiming Moss would have made much of a difference are out to lunch. Look at his attitude over the years. And then think of him in the spotlight of Dallas when he was a rookie.

He would have imploded here. He BARELY made it in Minnie with family help in a much less stressful environment.

And even if he had not come apart here, the D and O line were fading and Aikman's clock was ticking. This was not today where the offense has so many rules advantages. Back then the D was just as important and it was fading fast.

So no we would NOT have won any SBs with Moss.

If we had kept our first round pick, the one who spent in the supplement draft on Steve Walsh, we could have had either Junior Seau or Cortez Kennedy AND Emmitt Smith later.

I remember reading somewhere that Jimmy Johnson wanted Seau, which makes perfect sense because he was aiming for James Francis (a linebacker) later in that draft.
