Moves That Were Almost Made

Per Broaddus, we selected Roy Williams over Ed Reed, the reason being Dallas was looking strong safety in the scheme. They obviously were looking back at the old Dallas Cowboys years, not interested in evolving but plugging holes. It did look like a good pick in the beginning, but we all know how it turned out. It would be a no-brainer in today's game, with the spread offenses.

Can't fault them much for that one...

This thread is for all the moves that Dallas almost made, or inquired about making that never came to fruition. Also for fun tidbits that you guys/gals know about, post them here.

People obviously know about Sean Payton offering a 2nd for Romo and the Big Tuna liking Merriman over Ware and wanted to take Spears with the 1st pick.

But did you know....

-Dallas inquired about trading up for Earl Thomas but didn't want to swap picks and give up an extra 1st and a 3rd.

-Jerry called Detroit about Calvin Johnson but they wanted something ridiculous like a couple firsts and Jason Witten, their way of saying 'yeah right he's ours'.

-Speaking of Detroit, they would've given Roy Williams up for just a first but fleeced Jerry on the deal into giving up a 3rd and a 7th as well in exchange for the receiver and a 6th.

-Had Kenny Vaccaro fallen past New Orleans last year, he'd be a Dallas Cowboy right now.

-Wade Phillips desperately wanted Chris Johnson but was overuled by Jerry and Jason who both really liked Felix Jones.

-Dallas liked Foles and Dalton a lot, and even despite having a franchise QB would've taken them had they fallen just a bit further.

These are just a few that I know of that I wanted to share, if you know of any feel free to add.

Some of those are well known, but I've never heard some of the others and I listen to and read everything that comes out in the DFW media.

The Merriman/Ware issue is well known.

The fact that Garrett liked Dalton is well known.

Dallas does not need to give up and extra 1st for anybody.

-Speaking of Detroit, they would've given Roy Williams up for just a first but fleeced Jerry on the deal into giving up a 3rd and a 7th as well in exchange for the receiver and a 6th.
There is no possible way to know that Detroit would have settled for only a first. It doesn't really matter because it would still have been a dumb trade, but there is no way to know the truth.

-Had Kenny Vaccaro fallen past New Orleans last year, he'd be a Dallas Cowboy right now.

The media also said that there was no way the Cowboys would pass on DT Floyd either.

-Wade Phillips desperately wanted Chris Johnson but was overuled by Jerry and Jason who both really liked Felix Jones.

Yes, it was reported that there was no consensus on that pick. Somebody else in the organization was reported to like Mendenhall. Wade was also reported to "stand on the table" to draft LB Jason Williams and he was a complete flop.

Most people know this but in 2009 Dallas wanted to draft Max Unger but Seattle jumped them and took him.

People should keep the 2009 draft and Max Unger in mind when they say that Frederick "might" have been available later.

The Cowboys would have been better off trading multiple of their other picks to move and get Unger even if it meant trading up into the 1st round. Instead they tried to "wait it out" and he was picked a couple of spots ahead of them.

Aikman would have only played 3 years and 36 games with Moss. And does it really matter that Dallas drafted Ellis? They could have drafted anyone else and some people would have been disappointed. Without Ellis that already struggling defense would have been even worse. Nothing really would have changed for the Cowboys' fortunes had they drafted Moss. It probably would have only been a bigger circus.

Wrong,wrong,wrong.

Tim Brown wanted to come to Dallas in like 95 or 96. Brown was a free agent and wanted to come back home to Dallas to play for his favorite team the Dallas Cowboys. He said he wanted to call Michael Irvin to make sure Michael was okay with it.

Tim said he called Mike and said Mike me and you could be the best duo of all time playing together. Tim said Mike told him NO, and said it wouldn't be enough footballs to go around if he came to Dallas. So Tim went back to The Raiders. But that would've been a nice duo because This was around the time when Alvin Harper was gone so Tim would've been a huge upgrade.

Both Tim Brown and Michael Irvin talked about this before when Mike had his radio show in Dallas.

That was a horrible pick! Even Carpenter was shocked. Lol

Wrong. He had a clear first round grade by most teams. I read a ton about how he would be a better pro than AJ Hawk. He just turned out to suck.

That still grinds my gears. So many picks accumulated ... and no willingness to move them in what was widely viewed as a weak draft

One poster here said Fred would have been there in the 3rd round. True story.

Aikman retired because nobody wanted to pick him up because of injuries. He was throwing out feelers to see if he could play with another team. I believe one of them was KC or Miami, I can't remember which one.

San Diego?

Nobody is going to mention the Bengals offering a first for Bennett and Jerry turning it down?

I know, I know, never happened.................OR DID IT?

But wait...i thought jerry made all draft decisions and usurped any autonomy of the head coaches he had.

He has and does utilize the final decision, if he is unsure of someone he will defer to his staff. Good for him he still fails at the other 90 percent of being a GM.

Couple I can remember as of recent,

The passing of Chris Johnson, Jamal Charles, Rashard Mendenhall etc etc for Felix Jones..

Nnamdi Asomugha and settled for Carr.. Nnamdi retires two years later

If I recall we had Seattle Seahawks linebacker, Bobby Wagner on our draft board but missed on him somehow?

Interest in Urlacher after last season, but he decides to retire

When the whole board was set on guards Carl Nicks and Grubbs, and we go out and sign Livings and Mackenzy...

The pursuits of Brian Waters deemed "dead" at the start of the season, one month later he is starting for us.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head.

There is a way to know what Detroit would have taken for Williams. Matt Millen said in an interview that they would have taken a first, but Jerry kept sweetening the offer. Millen said they could have gotten more out of Jerry if they would have asked. I feel like he should know if anybody does.

Any chance that Millen is trying to play up his one good move as a GM?

Man, I'm still salty about that, 16 years later. I remembered standing there with my dad all excited about Aikman to Moss and all of a sudden 'Greg Ellis' showed up on my screen.

And I didn't know they had a rep in town, no wonder he always dominated Dallas. Wanted to send a message, and boy did he ever.

I think an argument could be made that this was the beginning of Jerry's mediocre run.....and this teams hasn't recovered since. If Dallas selects Moss then they aren't chasing after Roy Williams. And then the 2009 draft isn't such a disaster. It's been one Jerry bumbling mess trying to fix another bumbling mess ever since the Moss debacle.

Parcells wanted Dewayne Robertson but got picked one pick before Dallas by Jets. Ended up with Terrence Newman

And yet another bumbling mess.... To think Terrell Suggs went next. Banghead: They take Suggs...then the following year- they get Ware. Ware and Suggs dominate like Taylor and Banks did for the Giants.....And we don't chase after Spencer either!!!
