mostly Rush.

One night after work a few people came over and we were listening to
"The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars"
and a girl got up and started complaining about how she did not understand
what she was listening to.

Apparently, I insulted her completely unintentionally and she
and her boyfriend promptly left.

Same here. Could just never get into the Beatles. At all.

I was listening to Sir-Mix-A-Lot this morning.

My Posse's on Broadway. :D

Same. Them or Nine Inch Nails.

I love so many genres of music it is crazy. My music collection on shuffle would probably make most people's head explode. I can't say I have been given too much grief over any particular artist though. Maybe a genre. I love techno (or EDM, whatever you want to call it) and that genre was always associated with the rave scene in the early 2000s, so probably more judgement than grief on listening to that back in the day. A lot of it became more mainstream this decade though.

If I have to admit to anything that would give me grief, it would probably be (when none of my friends are around of course :muttley:) that I don't mind some NSync, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears tracks. Hey, some of them are catchy. :D Plus when you had a young daughter that grew up during those times, they tend to get caught in your head. I will never admit this again though. This message will self-destruct in 5 minutes.

I was a card carrying detractor of Techno, EDM, House, Trance, anything electronic because that wasn't "real music" and I thought they were covering for a lack of musical talent. Well, when I stopped my prejudice against it and started to really listen, my ears were opened and that has become one of my top two requirements of music.

I used to catch flak for being a New Age fan, back when that was a thing and my hard rock buds used to like to call me "Yanni" only they used the sexual slang part of that. So one night they're over for poker and I make a bet on one hand, an hour of their time vs $100 to each of them, $500. I was on a mission to see if their discovery could be the same as mine. I ended up winning the hand and told them to grab their drinks and took them into the family room where I put on "Yanni at the Acropolis". This is a live performance of what he had done mostly electronic only with a full orchestra and him at the piano. I converted 2 of the 5 because they'd never thought of the music as that musician did, it was always a full orchestra in his mind. They couldn't disconnect from the melodies.

For me, it doesn't matter the genre and I don't care if it's a boy band or death metal, if the melody connects with me emotionally, I am in. That's what I keep searching for in all music, the connection inside me that I cannot explain why I like something and do not have to explain to those that matter. It moves me when nothing else can.

I feel sorry for those not raised in a home where there was music and I know quite a few. I need a fix of Big Band and standards like Martin and Sinatra and a dose of my Mom's favorite, Mario Lanza ever so often and I am not listening, I am taking a journey accompanied by a soundtrack, the soundtrack of my life.

Did you dig her and were just trying to get him to leave? That's OK, jsb, better to find out early on that she has no musical taste.

One of my lessons about the power of music was getting into music that I didn't know the lyrics of because they were in a foreign tongue. Gipsy Kings, Mana, Jaguares and all of the single artists from Buena Vista Social Club. Their vocals are instruments and the fact I can't read music, I don't know the difference.

However, I did carry that too far. My wife loved that music as well as opera so I figured "she don't need no Murican words" she'll probably like my new banging band, Rammstein. Well, I was wrong, soooooooo wrooooooooonnnnnnng. LMAO, she told me to get off the patio, go to my room and take my new friends with me.

My mum is big on Yanni too. I've got to admit that I like a few of their songs. Not enough for me to go to a show, but I don't mind them. I'd happily turn out to their show, actually, in lieu of a rap show or a country show.
