I don't know if your idea will work but I already like you better as the GM.

I would make it a priority to get Dak and Cooper signed prior to the deadline to use the franchise tag and here is the main reason why:
So I could use the franchise tag on Byron Jones. Then I would tell Byron Jones that he has 3 options. 1) Play on the franchise tag this year, 2) negotiate a team friendly deal with Dallas, or 3) seek a trade to another team. I am betting that he and his agent would opt for option number 3. We probably would not get a 1st round pick for him but I bet we could squeeze out a 2nd or 3rd rounder from some team this year which would be better than a late 3rd round comp pick in 2021. Also, we could choose to not trade him to the Giants or Eagles. We could kind of dictate where he goes. The only risk we take in this scenario is if Jones signs the franchise tag and is happy to play for $16 million a year in 2020. However, I don't think that would be the case because rumors are circulating that his starting price in free agency will average at least $16 million a year and he would be missing out on a lot of guaranteed money by playing on the franchise tag.
I expect the Dak and Cooper haters to immediately trash this thread because the whole scenario is based on paying those guys.
Or a bigger bang bus...My strategy would be getting a bigger yacht
Good idea, but dont count on jones boys doing that. The point of my post was not to find a way to keep Byron Jones but find a way to trade him and get better compensation than a comp pick next year. The only way to trade him is to franchise him and then allow his agent to find a trade partner. Preferably a trade partner not located in the NFC East.

its already an assumption that the Cowboys will try vigoriously to re-sign Dak and Cooper, but the question with the WR is will it come by any means or could there be a forced situation that
re-directs them to another WR instead of Cooper ?
If Dak Prescott camp says make me the highest paid QB in NFL ..or else ? .. Ditto with Cooper (despite his infamous disappearing acts) to make him the highest WR in NFL history .. or else ?
what we dunno is whch party between the players vs Stephen has been the more stagnant and unreasonable in these tough negotiations.
If we are using the franchise tag on ANY player, it’s with the seriousness and sincerity that he will eventually re-sign a long term deal here – not dangling him just for the sake of draft picks.
The franchise buys you more time to try to negotiate that eventual long term deal.
- You simply cannot chance a risk of placing your franchise QB in a position where you can lose him. That’s too much of a premium and difficult to find position as they come in NFL.
Not if you truly value him as such ( unlike Commanders with Kirk Cousins) … so that Franchise tag just has to be reserved for Dak until that finalize that long term deal ..
- Opinions vary but the Amari Cooper issue is a real tricky one, imo.
We’re about to dish out one of top highest paid WR contracts to a guy that has been the center of questionable competitiveness ? Is he Elite .. or is he more of a No.2 than an elite featured No.1 ?
And Dak is not that kind of elite pure passer that can make receivers better than what they are.
We’ve already gave up a 1st rounder for Coop, now what happens after when we give up that enormous contract that locks him in the cap for years to come
– and is he the type that shows big in biggest games ? ..vs the biggest name CBs ?
The risk of that is if Coop departs in FA, we have to go thru the Sammy Watkins like scenario all over again, when we had to replace Dez,..
If Cooper departs, a featured No.1 lead WR instantly becomes priority in the draft or FA. and in a panic move, it's a very strong likelihood that we'll likely trade up for a 1st round guy very early.
and there's a lot going into depending upon a rookie WR, much less hoping it turns out well for us in a crapshoot gamble.
- If there are any fans thinking of trading for troublesome OJ Beckham, that becomes too risky with his persistent character history, and the amount of high picks it will take to get him.
- With Byron Jones – if he just only had Jordan Lewis’ ball hawk INT ability, he would have been re-signed here long term with da quickness .
But he doesn’t, he actually may have the worst ball hawk skills among the front running top 6 DBs on the roster. However Richard made him into a very solid man coverage CB
and combine with his durability grades and impressive size/speed ratio
He will definitely be a very hot commodity in a league that is starving for man coverage CBs. He just has to go to a defensive scheme that clearly and strongly emphasizes that kind of coverage.
Otherwise Byron will be lost and beaten in zone, off line coverage schemes.
And “ when “ Byron leaves in FA, a starting CB becomes one of the top two very high priorities among defensive needs. I really expect us to be drafting a CB within the first 2 rounds.
But the cooper issue could totally change the immediate dynamics of what direction we are forced to go in.

Apple? Tree?i would turn the reins over totally to stephen and stay out of the way. enjoy the boat. be a papaw.
and why did we give up a #1 pick for Cooper ? because our entitled overrated QB could not win or find open receivers accurately , he needs 5 yard seperations to hit someone , and that did not even happen in crucial moments. And the #1 pick we wasted on cooper produced a mediocre performance and an invisible man act by cooper and dak in crucial games: New Orleans, New England , Philadelphia etc etc. This front office is delusional to double down on these two pretenders. Cooper is fast and talented but has no fire or competetiveness once pushed around in crucial games. He likes to excell when things are easygoing and relaxed . Same as Dak .* Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

No, because our idiotic GM panicked and spent valuable resources on a kneejerk trade. It was stupid at the time and gets stupider every day.and why did we give up a #1 pick for Cooper ? because our entitled overrated QB could not win or find open receivers accurately , he needs 5 yard seperations to hit someone , and that did not even happen in crucial moments. agree , it was a panic trade for cooper, viewed as the last step to help an imaginary star QB , followed by a cave in to get the star QB a top tier RB in zeke. This all turned sour as all struggled , and Dak's shortcomings remained. He padded his figures in garbage time and in the worst division last year. but it was all a mirage. Best to move on and rebuild . This Dak , Cooper , Zeke ship has been tested and has sunk already last year. Why does jerry think it can do better in the future. This is the difference between the Emmit Smith contract in 93. He had already proven himself and won a super bowl . Deke and Zeke have not.No, because our idiotic GM panicked and spend valuable resources on a kneejerk trade. It was stupid at the time and gets stupider every day.
But what about those 4000+ fantasy yards the Dak droolers are propping him up with.and why did we give up a #1 pick for Cooper ? because our entitled overrated QB could not win or find open receivers accurately , he needs 5 yard seperations to hit someone , and that did not even happen in crucial moments. He has a long list of these trades over the past 20+ years! No, because our idiotic GM panicked and spent valuable resources on a kneejerk trade. It was stupid at the time and gets stupider every day.
Exactly , one of the most meaningless stats last year. Dak was not convincing in ANY meaningful game . When the run game stalls, he folds . Period. No team fears his are or accuracy , and jerry wants to pay him 33 to 36 money ?? crazy really. But what about those 4000+ fantasy yards the Dak droolers are propping him up with.
