They'll get a 1st back for Asik so it will be pretty close to trading off Asik and Lin for nothing.
I am really shocked people see Morey as a genius.

People hoodwinked by moneyball style stats geekism but ignoring basketball reality on the court.

All that said: Beverly, Harden, Parsons, Bosh, D12 is a great starting 5 offensive team. Perhaps one of the best of all time. That's 120 a game type line up.
Tho not sure they can get any stops when it matters and the depth is RIGHT now puffs of smoke.

Do they still have Lamb or is he in OKC?

This will depend on the picks they get back in return. Lin doesn't really do anything for me but he doesn't hurt the effort and Lin does give you 12/13 pts a game and 4 Assts. a night.

This is basketball. It isn't about PPG and ASG but about fit and system.
Since LAL has no coach we can;t discuss system at all but Lin we cna discuss with fit and he is a scoring Guard with emphasis on the drive.
He is not a good defender nor a great floor spacer.

It is not a bad use of cap space by LAL but is the type of thing you thought reserved for teams who couldn't get free agents to agree to a deal.

It signals imho that LAL is giving up any big fish chase this year and focusing on next year. ---But next year may well be a big bag of nothing in free agency.

In fairness to your Rox, if they get Bosh and Parsons taken care of they have to be really appealing to vets that want to chase a ring.
Once the roster is full they may well be my choice in the West. --tho it would really help buy my confidence if they hired a new coach:) ---i understand the tragedy mchale went through and why hou has been reluctant to dump him but he has underachieved.

I don't think it signals that they are done. I agree that it probably means they are not interested in any other Big FAs but honestly, I think they were really only interested in Anthony this year. Obviously, they would have liked James but I don't think they ever figured they had a chance there. You don't know really who might be available in 2015. It could be better as well.

They need a defender or two. Real defenders too. Not the guys who are just good for six fouls and they're out. Guys who can rebound and get in some grills.

I never liked the McHale hire to begin with. I loved Rudy T. Hated Jeff Van Gundy. Liked Rick Adelman.. and now I'm just biding my time til the next coach comes along. lol

Gasol is best when he's running the floor. Early offense in the set is better for him then low post offense (though he can do that too). He would fit what they do there.

One advantage the Spurs MAY have is, Tim and Manu probably come off the books next year - when Pau's brother is a free agent. Just another angle I'm sure they've played up.

I am right there with you on needs.
I think the Rockets would be good to target Shawn Marion with the cap MLE.
Thought last year trading Asik to Dallas for Marion would have likely given both teams better records and r1 playoff series wins.

done in the sense of signing big name guys this year.
to hold cap space for next year they have to sign 1 year deals.
kobe and randle will be 30m alone. so they've got about 15m to play with before they enter lack of max space for next year.

dallas did this two years ago to push a window and it is tough.
mayo, kaman, collison... gross!!!!

we actually do have an idea of who will be there in 2015.
those players will shrink not grow.
the big fish right now are lamarcus aldridge and kevin love.
dragic and rondo probably fall next after those guys.

i rather expect the lakers to offer gasol one year and like 15m maybe a 2nd year with team option.

that's not a benefit or useful ploy.
those guys are the draw in the first place.
better off saying they are gonna run another seasons which could coincide with a 3 year deal for Pau that includes a 3rd year PO.

They don't have to do that but I think they would rather do that. I mean, even with this deal for Lin, they still have a decent amount of Cap left. If they found a guy that could help them long term, I think they would do it. If they don't, then they push it out. I posted earlier in the week that I would love to see a guy like Aldridge come to LA. I like that guy but we'll see what happens.

Next year, Nash is off the books so there will be even that much more space. We don't need all allstars. We need some guys who can play defense and rebound and play smart offense.

DAL ended up with same plan B type free agents and it isn't a bad deal.
Monta, Calderon and others were really good signings for above MLE but well below max.

LA is going to either come home to Dallas or stay in Portland. If anyone in Lakerland mentions him just ignore them:)

Kevin Love was a real threat to return but if he is traded to CLE it will be to stay there and play with LBJ.
And why not? Love would absolutely crush the East. He did last year in games versus them.

for your Lakers if they want to admit now they are giving up big fish dreams they sign a Lance Stephenson type.
but as you note, probably won't give up big fish chase and will instead piece meal this team another year.
very, very odd with Kobe paid so well.

I'm talking about the chance to play with his brother - which they've both mentioned they would love to do in the past.
