It appears that his agent called Ed Werder and gave him this info. The agent/player would be stupid not to threaten to hold out at this point; however, once the July 15th deadline has passed, Dez has zero to gain and could lose by missing camp or games. If his stats decline this season, that only hurts him next year in contract negations.

It's not as if the Cowboys are not offering him a contract. It is his choice if he declines the offer.

Did a decline in stats...or flat out not playing at all hurt Hardy or Peterson? When you are talking about superior players...in their prime....SOMEONE will pay them a premium. It SHOULD be us....what that number is...I have no idea....but they way our offense is constructed....Dez stats only tell part of the story. He gets a lot of other guys open before the ball is even snapped. Dallas offense is not New England. Where you just plug anyone in at WR and RB and it works. If that is what we would RATHER do....we really need to overhaul our offense!

WR is such a diva position in the NFL... and that call to Stephen was a pouty, diva move for sure.

IMO-- Dez is misplaying this. Badly. He has no leverage except one thing: fan support. Say the right things. Do the right things. Work hard. Play out the tag(s) if you have to. Sooner or later-- fans will be demanding that the Jones' sign him and that will create tremendous pressure for JJ to "look good" giving the fans what they want.

By saying he's willing to screw his teammates over by skipping games-- he's dividing his fan support. I want him to be a Cowboy for life-- but I will not support him (or any other player) that refuses to play out a one year deal that gives them top 5 money at their position. I know he wants the security of a long term deal and the respect of getting paid like he's the best WR in the game-- but don't do it this way.

Dez doesn't do himself good by calling Jones to tell him that. It makes him sound desperate. I think Stephen will call his bluff

Disagree. Dez is letting him know exactly what he is doing so there is not any misunderstanding of his position.

If he misses games without the long-term contract, he's the idiot for forfeiting the $700,000+ per game. It does no good as the Boys cannot change the deal during that year. Takes a lot of "principle" for a man to sacrifice that amount of money when his gripe is over the long-term security of his family.

He has already DONE THAT! Did fans or the team have any issue with him being underpaid the last few years? You think agents and players let that go unnoticed? Actually, Dez did. He has been underpaid for a LONG time. And has not complained ONCE! Now it is time to be paid like he SHOULD....and now we got a problem. But again...there was no problem when his production outweighed his compensation. But now he wants to be compensated according to his production, impact and status on the team...and here we are with big problems!

Yes. Hardy under normal circumstances would have received a mega contract. Instead he got a non-guaranteed 1 year deal.

Peterson was not a free agent; however, I've heard that the primary reason that Peterson come close to being traded was because other teams did not want to pay the salary that the Vikings are paying him. I don't think his salary would have been an issue before he got into trouble.

The Franchise Tag keeps Dez here. If they can't sign him next year it's different, but this year the Tag both keeps him here and gives them the opportunity to negotiate a contract again next off-season.

The holdout threat is nonsense. If he is dumb enough to hold out, then he is too dumb to risk giving him huge guaranteed money in a new contract.

Dez does have some leverage. As much as we like to pretend that him having a bad year this season due to a fight over a contract would hurt his value next year, this simply isn't true.

Dez could sit out half the season and 75% of the league wouldn't still be lined up to make him the highest paid WR in the league......
Teams know what he brings on the field and off the field....they want it.

It looks like this internal circle jerk that caused Murray to be an Eagle over a moderate contract could also cause our best WR and maybe best player outside of Romo to leave one day.

sounds like this could get bad. if he don't get signed it will not be good for him or team will hang over there heads the whole offseason and will affect how the season goes. not good

I tried to tell folks this was going to end bad if the cowboys force Dez to play on this franchise tag. and all i was told on here is how much Dez loves football. and how playing under the franchise tag won't affect him. what planet do some of you live on? i knew this was going to be a big problem going into this season. pay Dez his money. get this deal done now before the season get's ruined before it starts. i have post on here before that Jerry and his son are playing with fire.

If Jerry is not careful, Stephen is going to have this team in lasst place before long. first Murray, and now Dez. this is not good cowboys fan. get this man signed now.

I wouldn't call him dumb for holding out. I get it that once the deal isn't done it doesn't really help him force the deal to get done week 1. However it may send a message for next seasons negotiations.

I don't worry about him holding out. I worry more about him becoming jaded and losing the love and enthusiasm he has for this team. I worry more about him starting to make business decisions when his leg feels a little cramped up. I wouldn't blame him if this is what happens. The team has made it crystal clear that its a business so how can we fault him for treating it the same way. Its a shame really...

That said....we don't know why the deal isn't done. We don't know if Dez is asking for too much money or if the Jones are offering too little money. It may even be about guarantees. We saw how the FO treated Murray over guarantees.

I wonder why Sean Lee and Tyron Smith didn't have to go through these gyrations to get the lucrative deals they got?
