Again, your incorrect. He can sign for 5 years $100 million by resigning or 4 years $74 by resigning. That is a difference of $26 million. That number is even less because if he resigns with that same team, his first year salary, plus a 7.5% raise (after 3 years you get Bird rights), would be $20 million+, lowereing the lossed money by $6 million.

Agent Jeff Schwartz quickly added, "It has nothing to do with how much he likes New Jersey.," Not long after, Williams himself later tweeted, "Don't know why people are tripping just bc I'm opting out doesn't mean that I won't resign with the nets!"
It was all business the two were saying. As Fred Kerber wrote, unless Williams thinks $42,711,249 as "chump change", he'd be that much better off to wait six months. Kerber also put the Nets' chances of signing Nene Hilario or Tyson Chandler at "favorable" although the Nets’ preference is Nene.

So tell me how the difference between 5/100 and 4/74 is $42+ million? He could be reffering to signing with the Knicks, whose total contract they can offer is about $58 million (58+42 = 100 btw :p: )

Simple math tells us, that Deron would forfit $ 26 Million. 6 of which he could not recoup in the 1rst year of a new deal.

Allowing him to walk does the same thing. NoH are in a no win situation. Trading him now and hoping for some lotter luck is the best course of action for that team. It's a tough pill to swallow, but you'll be further ahead landing a top pick in the lottery (no garuntee I know) than holding him finishing just outside the playoffs.

I've laid out their options.

CP3 can say whatever he wants right now but when it comes down to it money usually talks. There are other teams out there who can trade for him, give him a title shot, and full max.

Chris Paul already signed an extension with the hornets once before. It's not all about big markets.

I think it has to to with the extension rules . I could post more info on it but you guys would probably ignore it and move on like you keep doing lol

No, that's how much he loses if he opts out and signs with another team vs. signing with the Nets.

If he didn't opt out at all and just extended, he'd only be eligible for a 2 year 39.5M extention.

So as Marion said, he'd lose $42M by not opting out and extending right now.

Source.

He's also never been unrestricted.

It's not all about big markets, I agree. If Melo and Amar'e were in Minnesota, I'd think he were headed there even if they had no cap room or any real assets.

Paul signed the first extension for the same reason LeBron and others did... after your rookie contract you're a restricted FA with very limited leverage.

It's always worked that way: play out your rookie contract, then extend for big money for a couple more years, then hit unrestricted FA.

My bad, thought you were saying he'd lose 43 million if he didn't resign with the Nets.

But the point I was making about Derron is he's taking a wait and see aproach. Even with him opting out of the final year, he can still sign a 4 year extension once the NBA opens back up.

And he's not before the season ends. Not unless they pull of a trade for Dwight Howard, which will be difficult with LA having a near identical package.

w/o Dwight Howard in the fold, I'd say it's 25/75 he resigns with NJ.

I get that, which is why I said Paul has never been restricted. Most guys don't become free agents untill their 7th season or 8th season so they can get the 30% of the cap.

I still don't think the Nets need Dwight. They just need bigs, and depth.

Brook Lopez is under appreciated.

And he's giving up do much money to play for ny? Not a lot of guys can say they've done that. Especially one with shaky knees.

Even love and Blake have a chance at re-upping b/c of money despite their terrible teams/owners

“There’s mutual interest,” one source close to the situation with Chandler said last night while another described the two-way interest as “strong. But Nene remains the Nets’ preferred target at forward.

I'm conflicted. Tyson/Dwight is sick defensively but nene/Dwight is a better fit. Ugh. Decisions

And Nene/Brook is solid and leaves you with more financial flexibility to add depth.

Just sayin'.

Identical? Lopez is better, cheaper, and healthier than Bynum. Their picks are better. And they can provide cap relief

Paul will get his 5/100 in NY, just Melo did when we didn't have the assets to pull of that trade.

NeNe is a much better fit. Chandler's best years have been contract years, has an injury history his inability to step out on offense would be problematic if you got Dwight.

A Lopez/Chandler combo would be better than a Lopez/NeNe combo, if Chandler has the same drive as last year

I don't think Paul's headed for NY or LA. Why would a team like NY even want to get Paul anyway-- they're loaded with scorers who dominate the ball and create on their own. Paul's wasted on that team, especially with his defense sapped a bit with his knee condition.

Hypothetical trade: Clippers send Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman's expiring contract, 2 #1 picks, and $3M to the Hornets for Chris Paul and Trevor Ariza.

The Clips get to pair Blake Griffin and Chris Paul with Trevor Ariza providing some needed defensive toughness. The Hornets get an exciting young player in Gordon, save money $10M this year and $6M next, get 2 #1 picks, and get $3M cash. A bankrupt team gets cash infusion and assets, the Clips become one of the most exciting teams in the league.

Bynum is a much better defensive player. A center that avereged 6 rpg is a liability to most teams. Even offensively, the only thing Lopez has going for him, you're talking about a 13-15ppg scorer versus a 20 ppg scorer. Bynum's ability to get double digit boards or close to it, makes up for his offense, so to me, it's near identical in talent.

And the Lakers clearly could do Gasol instead, who while older, is also better than Lopez, so they clearly have near identical if not better assets.

MarionBarberThe4th;4281329 said:

Brook Lopez is a free agent after this summer, which actually works against the Nets. Orlando may not want to commit big money to Lopez so another team could steal him away. If not they'll end up paying 13 or so+ just because that's what a young big is worth.

MarionBarberThe4th;4281329 said:

Can't argue that.

MarionBarberThe4th;4281329 said:

Not neccesarily. Either team that gets Dwight would pick in the bottom end of round 1. So the NJ/LAL 2012 pick is gonna suck reguardless.

The Houston 2012 pick is top 14 protected, which means if Houston doesn't make the playoffs. The Magic have to wait till 2013. If they don't make the playoffs in 2013, they wait till 2014. It's top 14 protected every year till 2016, which at that point becomes a 2nd rounder. So the picks are near identical

MarionBarberThe4th;4281329 said:

So can the Lakers, although I doubt they are forced to. Lamar Odom's 2013 salary is only $2.4 million garunteed (worth 8.9 this year). Luke Walton has 2 years (5.8 each) left on his deal, which may be covered by insurance if he retires.

SF - Hedo Turkoglu (11.0M)
SG - Anthony Morrow (4.0M)
PG - Deron Williams (16.4M)
PF - ?
C - Dwight Howard (18.1M)

Bench:

Damion James (1.2M)
Jordan Farmar (4.0M)
Johan Petro (3.25M)
Sundiata Gaintes (900K)

That team right there is making $59M. That leaves no other room for additional players. And that team doesn't scream championship to me. It screams "not enough and no way to get to enough".

They could sign Nene/Chandler, then trade Lopez for Dwight. Ofcourse signing Nene/Chandler eats up enough cap room that if you can't trade for Dwight, you have to hope that

C- BLopez
PF- Nene/Chandler
SF- ???
SG- Anthony Morrow

is good enough that Derron resigns. Cause he takes up, $18 million year 1. Resigning Lopez+Nene and Chandler will take up 28 or so combined. And the guys like Morrow (4 million), Farmar (4.25 million) and John Petro (3.5 million) fill up the 58 million dollar cap.
