I fear I'm going to sound a bit like a broken record, but adding 10 pounds to our interior defensive linebackers won't mean a damn if the team NT is being handled by a center, cause then you have exposed linebackers getting blown away by 320 pound guards.
If you're going to stop the run in the 3-4, it starts with the nose tackle and right now we don't exactly have Casey Hampton at the nose. And with most draftniks giving away Ellis and Glover for peanuts and a peek at the bearded lady, I'm not sure exactly how we replace our two best linemen.
The defensive tackles this year seem awfully uninspiring. Is Gabe Watson worth #18?
Part of the defense running issue is that the play of a Parcells team is predicated on the offense holding onto the ball a long long time and giving the defense a rest. Fresh defensive players equate to less exhaustion and more peak performance, and further, to a lot less last minute collapse.
Perhaps the best thing we can do for this defense is ensure that our running game isn't erratic next year.
Fact is you can get these LB/DE tweeners with draft choices lower than a first. Pittsburgh isn't starting a single #1 draft pick in their linebacker corps, and right now they're the prototype of a 3-4 team.
It might be worthwhile to go into a pick like #18 with an open mind and an ear for a Parcells player. And by this I mean someone who will give 120% and leave it all on the field. I don't care who that is, whether it be OLB, ILB, OT, WR, or RB. For all we know, the BPA at 18 could be LenDale White.
