Browns Have Their Own Receiver Issues
Posted by rphillips at 8/30/2008 3:09 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

The Cowboys actually have a little more time to make their roster cuts. This year's deadline is 5 p.m. (CDT) so NFL Network can outlast college football's opening Saturday with an 8 p.m. cutdown special. That's great for league executives; not so great for Mickey Spagnola, whose Missouri Tigers are playing the hated Illini tonight.

Anyway, wide receiver is a central focus for the Cowboys and their season-opening opponent, Cleveland.

Veteran Joe Jurevicius has landed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list with an ongoing knee problem, meaning he'll miss at least the first six weeks.

Pro Bowl receiver Braylon Edwards insists he'll be ready for Dallas next Sunday, but he missed the Browns' final three preseason games with a foot injury that required stitches. Edwards told ESPN's Jim Rome that Donte Stallworth's cleats accidently gashed his foot during some post-practice "horseplay" on Aug. 9.

At least the Cowboys don't have any questions about their starting wideouts, Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton. The same can't be said about backups Miles Austin (sprained MCL), Sam Hurd (high ankle sprain) and Isaiah Stanback (shoulder subluxation). Austin and Hurd won't play in the opener, and Stanback is a big question mark.

So, Danny Amendola or Mike Jefferson?

CARDINALS CUT 22, HIGHSMITH MAKES ROSTER
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 30, 2008, 4:36 p.m.

The Arizona Cardinals have announced that 22 players have been cut, and they’re now down to the 53-man limit.

Among the biggest pieces of news is a name that isn’t on the cut list: undrafted rookie linebacker Ali Highsmith, who was a very good player at LSU but who surprisingly wasn’t selected in April.

Defensive players who were cut include linebackers Brandon Moore, Matt Stewart, Chris Harrington and Joe Tafoya, defensive backs Michael Adams, DeMario Minter, Dennis Keyes and Travarous Bain, defensive linemen Jason Banks and Keilen Dykes.

Offensive players cut include running backs Steve Baylark and Chris Vincent, offensive linemen Kelly Butler, Carlton Medder, Peter Clifford and Jasper Harvey, receiver Jamaica Rector, tight ends Alex Shor and Brent Miller and quarterback Anthony Morelli.

Center Pat Ross was also cut, which means that Lyle Sendlein will enter the season as the only healthy center on the roster. Veteran center Al Johnson is still recovering from a knee injury.

The team’s web site identified Morelli, Banks, Dykes, Harrington and wide receiver Lance Long as players likely to be offered spots on the practice squad, if they don’t make another team’s active roster.

I don't see anyone that could help us.

Rector being released may have an effect of whether we keep Jefferson or release him.

Bengals cut oft-injured RB Johnson; Perry to start

In the first major surprise of the day, the Bengals informed halfback Rudi Johnson that his contract has been terminated.

His agent, Peter Schaffer, confirmed that the Bengals notified him that his client will no longer be with the team. Johnson was in the fourth year of a five-year, $20.7 million contract. Hamstring problems bothered him this summer, and injuries have been a concern for the past couple years.

Johnson came to minicamp in incredible shape. He added muscle and lost body fat.

The release of Johnson gives Chris Perry the starting job. He was scheduled to make $3.65 million this season.

Senior writer John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Marcus Monk was cut by the Giants for anyone who still thinks he's NFL-caliber.
