NFLN: Lions get permission to speak with Garrett

Suprisingly my initial reaction reading this was "No!"

This situation reminds me a lot of my high school boyfriend (yea, laugh it up) I was totally miserable with him for a quite a while. I finally got the guts to break it off with him and I felt GREAT. But then he met someone new. I saw that he was in a happy and functional relationship. And I felt like garbage.

I don't want Garrett, per say. I just don't want anyone else to have him

I can't just guess randomly? You're really sucking all the fun out of this, man. :)

Like I said, I have no clue what the problem is but it's Jerry's job to get to the bottom of it and make some changes if it's the staff and Wade's job to get to the bottom of it if it's the players. I just don't want both of them sitting in a room, staring at each other and waiting for the other one to speak first.

I agree. I cannot understand how an offense this stacked cannot produce. Especially after last year. But without knowing the plays/reads, I can't figure it out.

Hopefully someone will...

The Lions are also requesting permission to interview McDaniels (Pat's OC) and Spagnulo (Giants DC).

I doubt Garrett would get offered over those two unless they turn it down. But I would like to see him get offered so Jerry would have to a make a decison on whether to let him go or offer him the Cowboys job now.

I think if Jerry is serious about having Garrett be the next HC here, then he should just do it now. I see no reason to bring Wade back. Maybe Garrett getting in the mix with some other teams will force Jerry's hand.

I'm not sold on Garrett being a HC. I'm not too thrilled with him being the OC. But I'd rather just go ahead and put in him charge if that is the plan rather than let Wade waste another season or two before we promote Garrett.

holy hell - we agree on something on the football forums. : )

I guess if a special teams coach can get a head coaching job anything can happen.

Again, lest we credit Garrett for that when Sparano was also on staff with a key offensive role?

We have one season of evidence to base a Garrett-only offense on, and it wasn't that promising.

Doesn't mean Garrett's evil, stupid or the Daniel Snyder himself. But this offense needs a philosophical change next season in terms of how it utilizes its receivers, sticks with the running game, develops its quarterback and game plans for opponents. My fear is it seems like an awfully big leap of faith to take to think that Garrett, in one season, will learn all those things.

Again, my problem this season had much less to do with the offensive stats (which, granted, were only slightly above average) and much more to do with the grander scheme of the structure, philosophy and game planning.

That's my biggest fear as well. You are talking about concepts that take some coaches years to get down right. . . . structure, offense, football philosphy, game planning . . .

In 2007 he had Sparano to lean on for this stuff, and I think you are right. We overvalued Garrett and undervalued Sparano. What we saw in 2008 was an OC who could not get it right.

So what do you do? Bring in a consultant/baby sitter for a Offensive Coordinator making head coach money so he has the time to pick up the concepts? Didn't we do that during the Campo coaching years? And what do you pay the "baby sitter"? If you are paying the OC 3million a year to do a job he's not ready for, what will the consultant want? And if your consultant is "correcting" your OC to get the job right, then why not get rid of the OC and make the consultant your OC, saving you at least 3million a year (because you know the consultant will want at least that much).

Seldom disagree with you but I'm hoping he's gone. He won't go to the Lions if he's smart. That's where coaches go to die.

If your car has a broken part you don't put another broken part in there to fix it.

The offensive slide began last year after the Green Bay game and Sparano was here. Everyone thought the offense was centered on TO and when he went out with injury we were lost.

This year Garrett tries to make us more balanced and TO complains to Deion and now we aren't TO centered enough. This whole year has been about JG trying to make us not focused on one player.

The problem has been that no one has been up to the task accept Witten.
Now the heat has been turned up and we see who can take it and who can't. TO and Romo can't take it - they throw JG under the bus. Wade and Jerry can't take it, they're afraid of TO. We are a team full of lilly-livered cowards. At least JG hasn't turned coward on anyone - I respect that a lot.

If I were him I would get out of Dodge and leave this team of Coach killers and moron decision makers.

We have a thread about who can be the OC if we lose him.

If it fills you with confidence, can you bottle it and send me some?

It is such a short walk from the penthouse to the outhouse. As recently as the Th week of the season there were folks calling for Phillips head and promoting Garrett in the middle of the season. In the same manner when Charlie Weis was hired at Notre Dame from New England, he was touted as the premire offensive mind in the game. I guess people think that over the course of a bad season or so they forget how to coach football. This is the reason I do not post as much as some people would like me to. I understand that we are all upset as we should be, but it takes at least 3 years in an offense to run it with precision and effectiveness. Give it some time we just ended season 2. Its real easy to jump on the bandwagon when things are great, but I would hope that Dallas fans would stand by their team in the midst of adversity better than this.

Thank god. A voice of reason. You can also add the scapegoating that occurred with Parcells.

It's amazing how quickly people forget about the devastating injuries that happened on a weekly basis throughout the entire season. This couldn't possibly have anything to do with our not being in sync from week to week.

To be honest, I'm surprised we had a winning season. Making the playoffs was beginning to look like a pipe dream. And as it turned out, it was just that.

Just because people can not come up with a good name to replace Garrett does not justify him staying, that is a VERY poor way to make decisions and does even less to prove any point you may have as to the worth of Jason Garrett.

Witten and Romo drawing plays, we had no offense.

Exactly!!!

Think about that fellas, our offensive scheme sucked so bad that our QB and TE had to start drawing up plays in the dirt.

Un-freaking-believable:bang2:

Please God, let Garrett and his TECMO BOWL offense go to Detroit.

I'm sure then the Lions would get in the playoffs with Garrett and the 'Boys watch at home. Again.

Garrett and his TECMO BOWL offense is winning jack in Detroit.

(unfortunately if he stays in Dallas, we aint winning jack either)

I didn't say it justifies it. I still think the guy is our next Head Coach and I don't want to lose him. I'd rather fire Wade than let Garrett go to Detroit, and I'm not thinking Wade should be fired.

Thats what a season of pitches to TO and shotgun screen passes on 3rd and 1 do to a fanbase.

I cant take another season of this TECMO BOWL crap, I just cant.
