NFLN: Lions get permission to speak with Garrett

If the Lions offer him the HC job he would be crazy not to take it. Look at it this way, if they go 0-16 in 2009, it is not like their record would be worst than 2008. All they have to do is win 1 game and they have improved from 2008. The other thing is, if Garrett was named HC in Detroit, he would have far more control of the team than he would as HC in Dallas.

Saw this on the ESPN ticker, found this article. I think he will take it if offerred.

Dallas owner Jerry Jones has said repeatedly that the Cowboys coaching staff will return next year in tact, but the Detroit Lions may throw a wrench in those plans, as they've asked for and received permission to interview offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
Star-Telegram, December 29: The Detroit Lions received permission from the Dallas Cowboys on Monday to interview assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Jason Garrett for their head coaching vacancy, according to an NFL source.
Garrett was one of the NFL's hottest commodities last offseason, but his star has dimmed a bit this year after the Cowboys offense failed to live up to expectations.
Last off-season, Garrett was the hottest assistant coach in the league and interviewed for head coaching positions in Atlanta and Baltimore. But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was committed to keeping him in Dallas and made him the highest-paid assistant in the league with a $3 million contract. Garrett's record-setting offense that was ranked third in the NFL last season fell to 13th in 2008 and didn't manage a touchdown in the Cowboys' 44-6 collapse at Philadelphia.

The Lions are also requesting permission to interview McDaniels (Pat's OC) and Spagnulo (Giants DC).

I doubt Garrett would get offered over those two unless they turn it down. But I would like to see him get offered so Jerry would have to a make a decison on whether to let him go or offer him the Cowboys job now.

I think if Jerry is serious about having Garrett be the next HC here, then he should just do it now. I see no reason to bring Wade back. Maybe Garrett getting in the mix with some other teams will force Jerry's hand.

I'm not sold on Garrett being a HC. I'm not too thrilled with him being the OC. But I'd rather just go ahead and put in him charge if that is the plan rather than let Wade waste another season or two before we promote Garrett.

Sadly, Garrett will be awesome in Detroit. Meanwhile, our current crop of Cowboys will continue to suck, proving that the troubles of the Cowboys have nothing to do with coaching and everything to do with player culture.

two pretty football savvy people offered him the HC job last yr, ahead of two guys who are both coach of the yr candidates...are you saying those people didnt know what they were doing?

I thought garrett was a bad fit in Dallas, but will be a decent HC elesewhere. Jerry blew the Garrett/Sparano thing. Wrong guy.

Garrett would be a breath of fresh air in Detroit though.

I think it would be great to see him go. Given that Wade is a softy, it would be nice to have an OC who demands precision from Romo, rather than someone who might be Romo's golf partner.

Will he be awesome? I don't think his shotgun obsessive offense would work well with a (probably) rookie QB.

I'll bet they are absolutely rejoicing having not hired this fool.

They are in the playoffs, while Jasons offense cant even score a TD in garbage time in the most important game of the season.

For years Cowboys fans screamed "bring back the shotgun." Now we have fans who are complaining about it?

Roll your eyes all you want, Jason is just another mediocre 90's era Cowboy that you have a fetish over, much like Norv Turner.

Yea, that shotgun pass to Roy on that 3rd and 1 was just brilliant. Worth 3 million all by its self.
