It won't effect WR numbers though, only the QB position.

Found this on Reddit

Third year of the franchise tag:

  • An average of the top 5 salaries at the highest paid position (likely QB). So if a WR's tag amount is $12M, but a QB's tag amount is $20M, a WR tagged a 3rd time will get the $20M. OR 120% of the average of the 5 largest prior year salaries at his position (so 120% of the 5 biggest WR contracts from the year before, in this case). OR 144% of the player's previous year's salary. Whichever is highest.

But their 2017 salaries won't be that high. They still use the 5 year rolling average to determine the QB tag number and it shouldn't be higher than Dez' 144% number of 22.1m. It was only 18.5m this year.

I want my investigation to begin. Will I ever see another Lombardi hoisted by Dallas; from the earth of course?

They already have

Randall Cobb,Torrey Smith, Jeremy Maclin, Larry Fitz, Andre Johnson and Dwayne Bowe have all set the market lower this year.

A year ago Nelson signed a 9M per contract and IIRC he was top 5 in yards last year.

The WR market has been in a free fall for a while.

MWallace, PHarvin, LFitz, AJohnson, DJackson, PGarcon all signed deals the team almost instantly regretted.

Add in all the rookie WRs that have been making huge impacts and the price keeps dropping, not rising.

If Dez plays under the franchise tag this year, it essentially becomes a contract year for him, so I think he will be playing as hard as ever.

Last year was the contract year for him. and the cowboys have refuse to pay him what he thinks he is worth. what makes you think it will be any different next year no matter what he does? they could franchise him again.i have a bad feeling we won't be getting the same Dez this year if he plays under that tag.

He'd essentially be screwing himself over if he doesn't play to the best of his ability. He may not like getting the tag, and I don't blame him for not liking it, but it's part of the business and he needs to accept it if that's what it comes down to. If he doesn't give 100% effort while on the tag, how does that help his chances in getting the sort of long term contract he seeks? The league will take notice if he's noticeably slacking and his next contract will take a hit because of it.

He can't let his emotions get the best of him in this situation, and he knows it. Ultimately he'll give the same 110% effort he has always given this season, tag or not. And like many others have mentioned, if he is so thick-headed that he can't grasp this, then the Cowboys will have been justified in being cautious with him.

We didn't make the playoffs the other 4 years with Dez and Murray either... not saying that they weren't key to our success last season. But if for some unforseen reason we don't play with Dez this season (not going to happen), we'll find a way to get by.

And people wonder why the cowboys have 2 playoff wins in going on 20 years.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. That the Cowboys don't make enough of an effort to retain their players? I'm all for throwing boat loads of money at players that deserve it (like Dez and Murray) if a salary cap didn't exist. But for better or worse it does exist, and it has gotten the Cowboys in trouble in the past. Especially the past 20 years. In fact I think one of the reasons (and there are many) that they haven't had success the last 2 decades is because of overpaying for players who subsequently fail to live up to their big contracts. Thus making it harder to maintain a competitive roster year after year, with epic amounts of dead money being eaten for players who flaked out on them or suddenly started to suck or whatever the reason.

I actually don't think that Dez is one of those players who will suddenly soften up after getting his huge contract and fall off the map within a couple years. I personally think he should be one of the exceptions to the Cowboys recent frugality, and deserves top tier WR money. But like I said, even if it comes down to playing on the tag, Dez will be fine. He won't sour on us, I think he genuinely wants to be here.

VoldAMara at work.... JPP not available, so mess with Cowboys...

Good comparison 'VoldAMara'.

I would not doubt that he had his hand in this one bit.

It never ceases to amaze me how certain owners (like NY's Mara) whines to NFL Office on issues like the Salary Cap issue on an uncapped year with Cowboys & Foreskins a few years ago and now this issue.

What amazes me is the NFL jumps on it flies on poop and next thing the news wires and all Cowboys haters are accusing the Cowboys & Donks of collusion.

To the other teams that are accusing the Cowboys/Broncos of collusion, I say "Take A Midol" :muttley:

A 33 year old Andre Johnson is not setting a market for wide receivers in their prime such as Dez or Demaryius. Neither is a 30 year old Dwayne Bowe who hasn't had a 1000 yard season in over 4 years and has only 4 TD receptions over the last 2 years with 0 last year.

Story on possible collusion between Cowboys and Broncos:

NFLPA is reviewing information to determine whether there was collusion between the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys on the unsettled contractual situations of franchise WRS Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant, per an NFLPA official. The NFLPA believes the Broncos and Cowboys had contact about each players’ contract when the collective bargaining agreement prohibits such contact. The NFLPA now is trying to determine if collusion did occur and when to possibly file a claim. The deadline for the WRs to sign long-term deals is Wednesday of next week.

I dont know what the panic is all about. We are in good hands with Williams!!! j/k - Please get Dez signed?

Just glad your back, you know I was worried about you being held against your will in LAS VEGAS. This one guy I know was missing for 2 weeks then called home for money for a bus ticket. He said he was taken hostage by a group of strippers at a strip club and forced to endure lap dance after Lap Dance, and drink after drink and they took his credit card and charged him for all the booze and lap dances till the card was maxed out. What a story, well he told it to his wife. Funny how he never reported this story to the police, makes you wonder huh ?

Call the police? When he left he turned around and said:

They've been known to overpay for underperforming stars in the past, contributing to that statistic you referenced.

Here they are getting away from that and acting wisely.

Heck, there's a small part of me that hopes they don't come to terms with Bryant. If this is a contract year for him, he will likely be more motivated than if it's the first year of a long term deal.

Ultimately I am hoping for a deal, but not reaching one is nowhere near the disaster you think it will be.

Yes they could certainly franchise him again.

If tha happens, tough to feel much sympathy for a guy who would therefore make over $28 million for 2 years.
