Opening a can of worms

Seems an odd time to ask a guy if he wants a job. But I can tell you that Witten pretty much screwed us with his timing. Telling us on the 2nd day of the draft that he probably isn't coming back? Jerk move if you ask me. But like I said, I'm almost glad it happened like that.

Well you can say it was a jerk move to cut bryant when they did. Now we know witten had been in talks about joining a tv crew for months. He wasnt the 1st choice for them but if you were wit could you afford to pass this up? It was bad timing but not a jerk move imho.

This ESPN job is a godsend. It prevents an unfortunate situation like with Romo or DWare. Or Landry for that matter. Nothing worse than seeing all time greats being ushered out when they want to stay. Emmit Smith? Rayfield Wright for us old timers?

Just because that is when the fans found out does not mean that is when the organization knew. He could have told them he was probably going to retire a month prior.

If you want to believe that. It was pretty obvious they were all caught off guard.

Witten didn't screw anyone. Are you too blind to know we will be better without him? It was a blessing. Dallas really didn't even need to draft a TE with jarwin, gathers and swaim competing for a spot.

Maybe you don't read so well. I said point blank I am happy it happened like that. That doesn't change the fact that telling the team half way through the draft was a hose job.

It was a complete jerk move to cut Bryant like that. Seems like they were cutting him no matter what. Waiting till after the FA period was near over was definitely a hose job.

Witten had to actually audition for the job. ESPN shopped several pre-recorded auditions around to test audiences and Witten ended up being the favorite. Witten had Jerry's blessing the whole time. Witten didn't get notified until the draft had started and immediately informed Jerry. Witten had a week to make a decision. I agree with his decision... what a great job.

I applaud Witten for coming to the conclusion it wasnt going to happen, and he wouldnt get to make the decision, if he didnt leave now..

He didnt screw us, He simply realized the state of the Cowboys...Maybe we should as fans!

I'm happy for Witten, but does anyone else feel that :espn: may be crossing the line by going after a current player? Imagine if they talked someone like Brady or Belichek to retire for a TV job.
My FEUDIAN receptors are giving me a fuzzy signal on that TOM BRADY'S continuing footballish flight path,,,(i.e. he ain't airborne for much longer)though, his personal vanity & Luke warm demeanor of likeability negates his name on any 'Short list' of broadcasting gigs,,,I'll wagero_O

He is intelligent but too eccentric.

Oh,no doubt as to his intelligence, yet,it could be construed as almost snobbish in coming across to a certain percentage of fans,,, now, with #82 ,,,yer' gonna have a Howie long level of likeability
To be sure, he possesses a certain arrogance that can't be easily dismissed by most. I don't think his personal guru would be welcome on the set.

:starspin:Now, we'uns love us some Witten!
(That curious possessive noun was home grown in the Smokey Mountains and drawled by the good folk of Elizabethton, TN, Witten's and my mamma's home town.)

My father had drilled several dry holes in eastern TN W-VA A.O. before I was born,,, I'm thinking the Appalachian mountain range, they went up against on the western slope of that,,I know he'd drilled producers on the western slope of the Rockies.

Yeah, it's the poor man's Shanandoah Valley. Not too much on resources except coal. Quietly beautiful.

I agree it was a bad timing on Witten’s part. The worst part was though, Witten and our FO should have kept it quiet until after the draft. This was if we really wanted a TE early no one would have known it. Philly, almost certainly would not have jumped in front of us to grab the TE in the 2nd round.
