Lol, teams like Tampa play heavy man. When Dak ‘got back on track’ with his numbers against Atlanta, it was because they played heavy man. That’s the exact opposite of daring Dallas to run. Dak has been getting away with it his whole career, because teams were afraid of the OL and RG.
When teams showed they didn’t need to play so much man, Dak looked like a complete train wreck. He’s always sucked against zone coverages. The Dak-led Cowboys when Dak was struggling was 31st in the league in third down efficiency, 26th in DROP-BACK success rate and 23rd in drop back efficiency and that’s when their RG went from averaging 5 YPC from both Zeke and Pollard to 29th in success rate.
Dak has been carried by the OL and RG his whole career. He got exposed when Amari wasn’t here and when Amari came here, Dak’s numbers against man shot up, but he still sucked against zone.
Except that is not how they played Dallas. Teams that played Dallas that had success, and even ones that did not, all followed the same formula. They all played a lot of 2 deep safety, only rushing 4 and dropping everyone else back into coverage. They, like the 49ers before them, knew they could get pressure with 4. Furthermore, they were daring Dallas to run inside by playing so far back and they also knew Dallas would not do it.
For an example of how to handle this you can look at the Chiefs. Many teams tried a similar method against them but the Chiefs would be completely content just getting 5 and 6 yard runs every down until the defense tried to do something about it and once they did Mahomes would throw it for 40 yards against you. This worked both because the coaches were smart enough to take what the defense gave them and because the OLine was good enough to win when they should which brings us to the second problem: the offensive line has not been the strength of the Cowboys for about 3 years now.
This is not even a QB is making too much issue because of the 9 QBs making 40m or more Dallas has the 8th best OLine and the 8th best set of weapons (defense is harder to place but realistically somewhere in the middle). That is ignoring that other QBs who are not in the club yet but will be joining it soon who also have better weapons and a better OLine. This raises the question if you have one of those great QBs but an inferior supporting cast how are you supposed to beat the teams that also have one of those QBs but have a better supporting cast?
