i don't know why people are using this to bash the front office decisions....what this really shows is yet another example of the need for teams to be able to recoup more $$ from players when they string out these sort of things. Orton was basically telling the team all summer he wasn't sure if he was gonna play, maybe would retire, didn't show up to any of the offseason work. So the Cowboys are forced to question his commitment and they let him go. in that scenario they should be able to recoup all the money to the cap instead of just a percentage.

it just reminds you of the Ratliff situation although that one was FAR worse and should have resulted in more $$ being given back to the team

but i don't fault the front office at all...we can't look back at every decision with hindsight and say shame on the FO. i would have cut him long before they did when the continued stalling was going on

because they're frustrated at losing for so many years. to a point it's understandable. after awhile, it's just annoying.

this guy doesn't want to start. he doesn't even want to play. he loves holding the clipboard and getting drunk 3-4 days a week.

the problem in dallas was an internal conflict either with the coaches or the players...nobody knows.

you guys are giving him too much credit by saying he wants a chance to start. orton doesn't have the will to be a starter anymore. he's a scrub and loser, F him.

I think Z is spot on here and I'll take it a step further. I think he was a deer in headlights in the Philly game last year and when he threw the pick, inside he decided he didn't want to be in that position with that kind of pressure, especially for a high profile franchise like us. Too much pressure, to big of a spotlight.

Just cash a check with the Bills and never have to worry about being on that stage ever again.

God forbid his rep gets ruined.

so what would you have done?

Fined him as per league rules and not cut him
Had he been told in no uncertain terms that is what we intended to do, he would have retired and we would have recouped our money

Orton knew Jerry coddles players so he forced Jerry to blink

Clearly an example of bad management

Not that complicated

Only under your senario you get a back up QB who doesn't want to be here, hasn't prepared, and would do nothing but bring down the locker room.

What you are failing to understand is that under those circumstances he would not show up and would retire
If he shows up, it is the job of the HC to make him productive or to let everyone on the team know you are there only to collect a paycheck and don't want to put in the work others are putting in
This is where a culture of a team comes into play
If you have played organized sports at a good level where everyone is giving their all, if there is a bad apple , his life is miserable
The coaches and team leaders should hold him accountable
Would this be tolerated in NE? No way

No, he was planning to report to training camp. No coach can "make someone productive." We cut him to avoid the cultural issue you cited.

Except that he was going to report to camp. So you'd have a guy who clearly doesn't want to be here (who cares what his reasons are/were) going through the motions. 3.25M lit on fire.

Yeah genius management.

Please go sit in the corner.

like others have pointed out, orton WAS going to show up for camp and simply go through the motions.

per league rules, you can't fine a player for that.

people tend to lean on cliches and stupid statements like "coddles" to justify saying something, well, stupid and blaming it on jones.

so what would you have done?

You don't waste $10.5 mm on the waiver wire guy that isn't good enough to get it done in Tony's absence in the first place.

"Venger, post: 5650772, member: 2090"]I hope this isn't just now coming over your Cowboys news ticker...

lol, in my defense, it's difficult to say anything insightful about a front office making the same mistakes year after year for decades on end.
