I just want to see a big school guy at a low bust rate position here for the next 2-3 years.

I feel like we always miss out on obvious hits like Jonathan Hankins or A’shawn Robinson type players—you know? The guys that the draft forum talks about in January before the combine numbers and offseason frenzy even begins.

These are good players that we just miss out on while swinging for the fences.

2011: Bruce Carter
2012: Traded for Mo
2013: Gavin Escobar
2014: DeMarcus Lawrence
2015: Randy Gregory
2016: Jaylon Smith

I hope Jaylon turns it around.
Goes back way further then that, last player from the 2nd to be a REAL starter and contributor besides Lee was Andre Gurode in 2002.

He's not a "liability". He should be getting more pressure but he's probably a better rotational player than a starter. He's probably not worthy of a second contract at this point. Bruce Carter was a good player for us as well, just because the team doesn't give you a second contract...it doesn't mean you're a bad player, just replaceable.

Seriously though, most second round picks are just okay, solid players, every now and then you'll find an elite player that slipped.
Well, I disagree entirely. His play contributes more to losing than not, which by definition is a liability.

I really thought it was going to be a lot worse than that

Carter, Mo, Escobar all played 4 years with a ton of starts......not Cartel's fault Witten is a robot
Lawrence has been good when healthy but is a still a key piece next year
Gregory was a huge bust
JSmith is gonna Lord out there

I don't know if people realize it but 50% of 2nd round picks bust
We can do better

They need to be more conservative and stay away from the risky / injury prone type of players.

We need good solid football players that are available on Sundays with that pick. If we land a superstar then that is great but don't risk it on guys who fall because of behavior and injury reasons.
I honestly believe the Cowboys have learned their lesson and will be much more judicious with their second round pick. Can almost guarantee it!

Considering we haven't been active in free agency in five years and we just finished 13-3 with one of the youngest teams in the league...I wouldn't say we are too bad at it.

We are a good drafting team, especially in the first round and recently, but no one does better at it than the Patriots.

And they do it by hitting on a lot of mid to later round guys and note they rarely have a top of a round pick either. I mean look at their OL which is pretty damn good:

Shaq Mason - 4th round
Marcus Cannon - 5th round
Joe Thuney - 3rd round
David Andrews - UDFA

Nate Solder was a first round pick.

No team seems to hit on more later round picks than the Pats. They seem to churn their roster and never miss a beat largely because of their drafts and UDFAs. Malcolm Butler was a UDFA.

They are the kings of working the draft and turning other teams' cast offs into productive players. It's a testament to their front office and Belichick.

We seem to finally be starting to hit on more of our later round picks, especially this year with Prescott, Collins and Brown. And I have high hopes for Tapper if healthy.

OK, here's a little game.
2nd round picks are usually well known, so most of these players were on most draft boards.

Let's play GM and pick your guys in these 5-6 years.
replace our pick with one of the players each year that went soon after we picked.

2011) Dallas took Carter
Take your choice of one: Justin Houston , Randall Cobb, Rodney Huston (G)

2012) gave this pick away to package with our 1st to move up some to get Mo Claiborne
Take your choice of one: Bobby Wagner, Alshon Jeffery, Levonte David, Russell Wilson ..

2013) Escobar
Take your pick of one: LeVeon Bell, Jamie Collins, Travis Kelce, Tyrann Mathieu

2014) D Lawrence (used 2nd and 3rd for him)
Take your pick of one: Derek Carr, Alan Robinson, Jarvis Landry, Devonte Adams, Tim Jernigan, Devonte freeman

2015) Gregory
Take your pick of one: David Johnson, Frank Clark, Tyler Locket, Tevin Coleman

2016) not sure if we can include this yet...Jaylon Smith
Take pick of one: Noah Spence, Michael Thomas, Derrick Henry, Xavien Howard, Rashard Robinson, Ashon Robinson, etc

Well, you can't count Mo as a win, considering they traded up for a top 10 overall pick to get him. He was a bust as a top 10 pick, as is, and when you factor in the loss of a 2nd round selection, that drives the final nail in the coffin. Carter may be the best of the bunch, but he never even played a full 16 games here. Escobar has 30 catches in 4 years. He probably has more penalties than catches.

I agree. Been saying this for years. 1st rounders aren't a problem for us. We can't land on 2nd rounders and it's probably the one big thing preventing us from being a franchise that consistently makes the playoffs.

I think this is a Jerry thing and not as much a McClay thing.

He has input in the 1st round obviously, but it's not his big gamble round and he can be over-ridden (see manziel).
The 2nd round is his designated gamble/go-for-the-fence round.
And it's too early to do that, imo.

Yep. The 2nd rd disasters are certainly on ole Jerry boy. Its his style. Too bad, its really hurt the Club. But, controversy sells.
