Parting gift from Tony Romo is extra $14M in Cowboys cap space

Zach Martin is already signed for 2.6m this year and 9.3m next year ......... a new deal will only decrease his 2018 cap number

The draft class is all signed and we are 18m under the cap.... all is good

"We can sign anyone we want"......... plus we have another 18m in reserves with Dez, Witten and TCrawford

Yeah, I'm not sure what people even think they're referring to when they're saying *this* years money is going to be going to Martin. It's almost like they literally have no idea what's going on.

We have 18mill in cap room now that we'll save for next offseason probably. That's good.

I'm anxious to see what they do with Martin's new contract, how it will be appropriated, etc. I'm guessing 6 year, 70 mill, 40 guaranteed. Lower signing bonus to prevent cash going out 5 years.

I don't mean to rain on everyone's parade of money, but this only looks good if Dak tears it up in season 2 much like he did in season 1.

Otherwise, we're a poor man with a ton of cash.

Let's wait to count our cash until week 8 and see where we stand.

Well, if he doesnt retire he is still under contract to the Cowboys.
How can he sign with CBS to be a commentator and still be non-retired from the NFL ?
Or does it not apply ?

He was released. He isn't under any contract and can sign (or not) with anyone. He's a free agent.

Show me the money!!

Most players have their biggest improvement in year 2. There is a difference between planning for the worst and assuming it.

He's not under contract. That's where the 14mil is coming from, so to speak.
Just like Jay Cutler is not under contract with the Bears.

A player doesn't have to officially retire immediately... if ever.
Example: Deion went to Baltimore after sitting out a couple years.

Nah, Dak is gonna tear it up, mon frere :)

I hope so. What makes me feel a bit better about it all is that we still have a very good OL. And we have Zeke.

So it won't all be on Dak. Like it was all on Romo for most of his years. So we'll see.

14m is nice, 40m in dead money over the next 2 years sucks. Hope we learned a lesson here.

I loudly opposed the Romo extension in 2013 for this exact reason, and got blasted on here. I saw an aging QB who would never last the life of that extension, and wouldn't be worth the middling success he provided while under contract. If you remember, this extension came after that 2012 win and in week 17 game in Washington where Tony absolutely **** the bed. After that game, I had lost faith in Tony being the guy who could deliver a playoff run.

I remember the countless arguments on here debating whether or not "clutchness" was a real thing. People laughed at those who said Tony chokes under big pressure situations. The reality is there are human elements to this game, and for whatever reason Tony's nerves often got the best of him in big moments. He won 2 playoff games in his decade as QB here, and there was no way he was ever going to string together 3 or 4 of them in a post season run. You need to be consistently great under high pressure situations to have a chance at a championship; Aikman had it, Roger had it... Tony didn't.

I appreciate what he gave to this franchise, but he just wasn't the guy many wanted him so badly to be.

Typical romo hater BS. 1) who was the coach for the last 10 years? Was not anyone as good as Roger and Troy had though after 93 you could argue with Troy it was a push. 2) what kind of O line and D did Roger and Troy have when they were winning SBs?
Those two alone destroys your petty rant. ANd if you are going to bring up BP, yeah he was important but not there long enough for Tony to really learn a lot as the starter. He did give Tony a base that served him well. Meanwhile Roger had years of maturation BEFORE he went to the NFL and then had a HOF coach the rest of his career. You do remember how bad Troy looked in his first year or so right? After the O line and D deteriorated and the coaching got worse just how great was Troy say 1997-2000?

'he won 2 playoff games''

Only a complete football idiot thinks this is a one player game.

I do honestly hope the only player they are looking to lock up is Martin. I would be revolted if they made another silly extension for "potential" as they did with Crawford.

I could see it with Irving and Collins. Both on their last years......

More than his questionable play under pressure, It was the fact they knew he had a bad back, they tried to cover it up with the "it's only a cyst" line, which was right out of Monty Python. How do you give a guy guaranteed money after that?

Like I said, lesson learned.
