Parting gift from Tony Romo is extra $14M in Cowboys cap space

14m is nice, 40m in dead money over the next 2 years sucks. Hope we learned a lesson here.
that is incorrect

it is 10.7m in dead money this year and 8.9m next year.... that is 19.6m and it was a great deal

the lesson learned is pay less when the cap is lower and when giving a chance to borrow against the future at a 0% interest rate, take it every time

If they roll over the full 14m then next year's dead money hit is now a positive 5.1m..... the Horror

I loudly opposed the Romo extension in 2013 for this exact reason, and got blasted on here. I saw an aging QB who would never last the life of that extension, and wouldn't be worth the middling success he provided while under contract.

I appreciate what he gave to this franchise, but he just wasn't the guy many wanted him so badly to be.
The Romopocalypse is finally here...... he was injured and couldn't finish his monster contract ....he was only 3 years into his 6 year extension..... this will kill the Cowboys chances for years to come.... we will be crippled financially and may never recover from the Dead Money hits

OR

We will be 18m under the cap with everyone signed and rollover at the least the 8.9m he due next year

All those teeth gnashed and doom and gloom predictions for naught

I love to say "I told you so"......... it feels so good to see so many people get it so wrong

So you're cool with losing 20m we could spend elsewhere? We don't need any upgrades or a extra 20m to spend on a game changing FA.....I bet you get really excited when the retailer says "and you saved $175 by using your charge card today! That'll be $425

So, how many games did Romo actually play under that new contract, and how much does that work out to per game? We'll see what steal he was!

we already spent it chief.......the dead money is just the bill for the players we signed the last 3-5 years........ notice we are still 20m under the cap

if you think Romo's deal was bad you know nothing about NFL QB contracts.......NOTHING

Still waiting, how much money we paid Romo per game he actually played in? After signing a guy we know was aging with a bad back, come on, lets see how awesome this deal was.

It's sad that you don't even know that you don't know what your talking about.

The Cowboys could easily have created cap space in March if they wanted to sign a big free agent or multiple free agents. The available talent was just not good in free agency this year.

From 2008 to the end of his career he averaged 10.6M per season. That's a steal for a guy with the following accomplishments:

That's really swell , now show me what he did after he signed the big contract and how much per game we paid him to do that.

It's sad that we wouldn't have had to create cap space cuz that's just pushing it down the road isn't it? , let's face it if we we're under the cap we could have afforded a few free agents . you're telling me nobody's out there that can help this team if we had extra cash in our pocket
Or maybe we wouldn't have let the really good guard walk instead of having a great Reserve.

...It’s not fun to save when you can make a big splash by adding big-name players. That seems very un-Jerry! But Jerry Jones is a smart businessman who has been salary cap smart these past several seasons, and it’s really paid off in terms of having more maneuverability under the cap.

By the way, if you’re an NFL general manager, your salary cap for 2017 is $155.27 million. That seems like a lot of money, but it goes fast when you have 53 players on a roster, plus 10 more on the practice squad. So it pays to be smart. When $14 million suddenly becomes available, it’s prudent to put it into solid investments (e.g., Zack Martin contract extension). You keep a big portion available for “needs” in the coming season (injuries, trades, free agents), but an equally big portion will be saved for the future.

Remember, it’s smart to “keep your powder dry”!...

Give Switzer his 100m now. 80m guaranteed
Haha if he's half the player with half the impact some of hype guys on here expect he will earn a contract like that soon.
I say pay Martin and trade for Sherman. It was the Deion signing that got us ring #5.
Sherman may not be that but he's as good as it gets at CB right now with a few good years left.

That would be a sweet move...

Leary leaving was not about not having cap space right now. It's a long term issue. Romo's dead money will be gone but Dak will get a new contract before Leary's contract is over.

They already had La'el who they like better than Leary. He is taking snaps at RT right now but they likely still see him at LG long term.

In terms of free agents, you can't just sign the expensive type free agents for 1 year. Most, maybe all, of the 2017 free agents were not great long term options.

What free agent DE was really a good long term fit for the Cowboys? Guys like JPP never made it to free agency.

Do you have any history of demonstrated salary cap knowledge? @bkight13 has years of demonstrated cap knowledge and you're arguing with him while having no relative credibility on the subject.

He seems to be ignoring that fact that we are presently 20m under the cap with the Romo dead money and have another 20m in easily accessible space if needed

Next year it gets even better when we roll over 10m or so and extend Martin to lower his cap hit..... they will start FA 30m under the cap

Wow! I doubt the Cowboys have ever been 30mil under the cap to start free agency. That's awesome! Should be fun for us
next offseason.
