Two things:

One, even a Pro Bowl year doesn't out his asking price in the other guys' range as it is in fact one year.

Second, they still gave leverage in that they can keep him under contract for 2018 if they choose, which of course they would.

Add those up and his cost would be much less than the huge money the other best at their position guys are being paid.

Gotcha. Also please explain how they can get to keep him one year through 2018. Would that be the "Tendered Offer"?

The lyrics go:

The Chargers had to put the tag on me
I'm not trying to brag homie.
It's not really about the cash homie

So yeah I am still not seeing it.

Now this seems like a guy passionate and engaged to me. Not a quitter like you claim.

Leader.

Ok, you bang the drum to sign him if you feel that strongly about it. I'll lead the charge the other way.

I do honestly hope the only player they are looking to lock up is Martin. I would be revolted if they made another silly extension for "potential" as they did with Crawford.
It's a tough balance. On one hand, if you are right about the "potential" of a player, his contract is incredible. If you're wrong (or not yet right), it looks bad. But paying for players that have "arrived" tends to lead to overpaying, or paying for players exiting their prime.

Yes.

I don't think he will get huge money either.

That's what I am hoping. However, every team must be chomping at the bit to throw some money his way knowing they passed him up in the draft.

I actually forgot about the added cap space from the Romo release, its like finding new money in a pair of pants.

Yeah, it's like you needed the cash for Christmas and you found it in January.

Shout out to Stephen Jones.

It's about to be Christmas in June for the Dallas Cowboys.

After being in an exceedingly tight salary cap situation this offseason, they're about to get a monumental gift a la the release of quarterback Tony Romo. Originally slated to hit the Cowboys' cap for a massive $24.7M in 2017, the June 1st release of the four-time pro-bowler will instead yield them a savings of $14M -- a massive bump over the $5M savings they would've gained had he been designated a pre-June cut.

They'll split the dead money hit of $19.6M over the next two seasons -- to the tune of $10.7M and $8.9M, respectively.

As it stands, the Cowboys currently have $3,565,774 -- per OverTheCap.com -- with that number ballooning to $17,565,774 effective tomorrow.

The $14M bump will be the largest of any NFL team this June, with the New Orleans Saints gaining just over half that number ($7.8M).

Then this would be the time to resign someone like our dynamic guard and front load the contact instead of back loading it like they typically do.

You said he was all about the money and linked a video that says the exact opposite.
You said that he was up and down. I showed how he had started slow but had 19 sacks the past two seasons.
You said that was was going to cash in and quit. I showed video where he was an obvious team leader with a passion for the game.

You can bang your drum all you like but you have no real basis for your position.

So, back to Romo for a minute - now that June 1st has arrived, and the cap money is paid/allocated.
Romo now has to officially retire ? So he can be honoured by the organisation correct ?
I want to see him get an official send off, befitting the player he was for us.
Clean it all up before the season starts and let him start his second career and dallas also move forward.
Thanks Tony, ohh and yes that money will help also, so double thanks !

So two down seasons followed by two up seasons?

Call it what you will. There are two good seasons out of his four year career. I won't argue about the descriptive terms.

So, your video proves otherwise? Sure thing.

You can bang your drum all you like but you have no real basis for your position.

There's no "drum banging" for me, I'm not the guy campaigning for him, that'd be you.

You go and campaign for what he's saying in that video. I notice you left out the key "word" he keeps repeating. Over and over and over and over again. Fine upstanding individual.

And nobody to spend it on (this year). I guess the FA crop wasn't all that great this year anyway, but it would have been better to have some money a few months ago. I guess it's okay to have some insurance in case they have to sign someone in an emergency situation.

No, he does not have to retire at all. He can do what he wants.

He showed a typical development path. Up and down implies inconsistency where he is up one year to go down the next. That is not the case.

You are actively campaigning against him as a player and writing obvious falsehoods to bash him.

Well, if he doesnt retire he is still under contract to the Cowboys.
How can he sign with CBS to be a commentator and still be non-retired from the NFL ?
Or does it not apply ?

Have it your way. The guy is great. Awesome.

Do Not Want.

Last word is yours, I've wasted enough time debating a guy this team has zero chance of signing and derailing a thread along the way.

Zach Martin is already signed for 2.6m this year and 9.3m next year ......... a new deal will only decrease his 2018 cap number

The draft class is all signed and we are 18m under the cap.... all is good

"We can sign anyone we want"......... plus we have another 18m in reserves with Dez, Witten and TCrawford
