For the last time, Cowboys aren't taking Lynch @ #4.

They have looked at him three separate times so the possibility is there. They have brought in several qbs as a matter of fact so they are serious about taking one. The question on the table is it a more responsible move to take a QB this year higher than he is ranked or be in a position like the Rams and mortgage future picks in 2017 or 18?

That's fine - but that's not saying much. I personally think Lynch is a top 30 guy and Cook a top 40 guy. There's a difference, But not a huge one.

How much did it cost the Raiders?

Don't recall but they did trade up to get him. How much would taking Lynch cost us?

If you think I am arguing that we should take Lynch at 4, you are misreading me.

My only point from the start of this thread is that Lynch is a much better prospect than the next crop of QBs that people are throwing around like Cook, Hackenberg, etc.

I agree with you on your reads of these players (with the caveat that not all college completions are the same level of difficulty, and so completion percentage is not a stat that is normalized for all college QBs). The problem is, players get better after college, and there are other factors beyond their evaluation prior to the draft that determine who's going to be a good NFL QB. Almost certainly, there is going to be a QB drafted after the top three who outplays one or more of them over the course of his NFL career. Maybe more than one. The trick is in knowing which one.

I don't like Cook in the 2nd. I think the 4th is about right for Dak. I think both of those guys have an outside shot to develop into NFL starters at some point. And if we're not getting a QB at 4, we need to start looking at that route yesterday because a 4th rounder is a fairly small price to pay, even if it is essentially for a lottery ticket.

Teams have different draft grades on different players depending on how they fit thier organization.none of us would have thought we selected Fredrick at number 31 in the first round he was supposedly a late 2nd-3rd round draft grade turned out well for us he is a pro bowler .second when Atlanta jumped from number 27 to number 6 to select Julio jones they saw something in him and made the sacrifice .at the end of the day you like who you like and you don't care what others think because you know the impact that person can have on your team. I'm all in to fix the defense but an opportunity like this doesn't happen to often for Dallas. I think Dallas will surprise a lot of people and take him at 4 why not he has all the tools ,arm strength athleticism. He was an orginal number 1 pick before the draft process started . Brought him in for multiply workouts. Sent the entire front office to his workout . It may not be such a bad idea.

Winston had 22 tds 6 fumbles and 15 picks.Only 2 games with 300 passing
MM had 19 tds 10 fumbles and 10 picks

If you pick a QB in round one this year he wont be ready to win games for Dallas for a few years, if Romo gets hurt.

I think a QB taken in Round 1 could be ready in 2017 to take over for Romo. Certainly not next year though. But I would be drafting a QB for the next 8-10 years hopefully, not the next 2.

My point is simply that you don't have to overpay for a QB, as you seem to be suggesting. And if you do - it better be a franchise level prospect. You don't overpay for the likes of Lynch because you need a backup QB or a starter 2-3 years down the road. There are Paxton Lynch level prospects in every single class - and they typically go in the mid-to-late 1st.

I think Lynch costs us a top 7 pick, to be safe. I think that is a lot more than he's worth. If we trade down to 12-15+ and he falls - cool. If not - it's not a major loss.

nope. no way that happens. Maybe at 15, but I don't think Dallas had QB on their mind outside of Wentz.

It's unlikely, but I wouldn't say 'no way.' It depends how they rate him. If he's a legit first round talent--one of 15-18 or so in the round for this draft--well, it'd be a bad value pick, but given how QBs are overdrafted, the reach wouldn't be incredible. The other thing to consider if we don't go that route is the opportunity cost of not getting one of the big 3 QBs. Do we go into the season with Kellen Moore as QB2 after last year? Really? Do we trade for Mike Glennon and cough up a high 3rd for a guy who's about to be a FA? Do we hope Hoyer shakes loose and pay him the ~$5-6MM/year he'll likely command as a free agent border-line starter? We don't have a lot of options that are any good right now. And getting a backup QB was supposedly our highest offseason priority.

I don't know about everybody else, but 'doing nothing and then adding Dak Prescott in the 4th' is not a plan I can get behind.

I don't think that's true at all.

They've looked at Lynch almost as much as Wentz. I think they have Lynch on their minds if the right situation presents itself (such as trading down and Lynch still being on the board).

I'm noticing a trend: The People who want Lynch think the Cowboys want Lynch.

I agree with you on one part: The Cowboys need to follow their draft board, which is different that the consuensus. If they think Lynch (or Cook) is a top 5 talent and franchise level prospect - they have to take him. But that's far from a given based on the information we have.

That obviously has to be the case. I could see Lynch being the #2 QB on their board. Or the top QB, even. And still being a top 10 or top 15 player for them. If he's the #15 guy on your board, and, for argument's sake, your top-rated QB....can you take that guy at 4 and feel good about it? Passing on 11 other players at lesser positions you had rated higher?

My guess: if Ramsey is gone and you don't like Bosa and refuse to take the RB, it starts to be something you look at. I'd hate it, personally, but I could see them doing the math and swallowing hard and pulling the trigger.

And if it worked, three years from now it would look like a genius move. If it didn't, it would go down as the biggest reach of the Jerry era--not including the Galloway trade.

The Cowboys taking Paxton Lynch at #4 would be idiotic.

Once you're outside of the "franchise level" prospect range, I'm not sure the position holds the weight that it does for the top guys. The NFL routinely lets 3nd tier guys slip. (Assuming Luck/Winston are 1st tier and Wentz/Goff are 2nd.) They seem to fall (Bridgewater, Carr, G. Smith, Flacco) as often as they're reached for (Locker, Ponder, Gabbert).

In your scenario, I would hope they pass on the QB. I just don't see the incentive to reach and hurt our current window for a "top 15" guy.

In my scenario, though, they'd have him as a 2nd tier guy. That's kind of the problem.

Anyway, I'd pass on him, too. Or depending who was there, I'd trade back and roll the dice on him being available later. But then I'd have brought in a backup QB already at this point, too.

I sincerely don't think Lynch is the safest gamble. Not even close. As far as gambles go, I think Cook and Hackenberg are safer. Lynch is miles away from ready. He may have the most upside of any QB in the draft, but he's not anything close to safe.

I agree, but Jerry doesn't like taking the safe pick....

This Rams trade should open some eyes to the reality of how expensive it is to get a potential franchise QB via the draft. Looking at it, it will actually be less of a risk to take a shot this year vs having to move up in future years. The way the draft is shaping up Lynch may be our safest gamble even if he wouldn't be the starter for three years.

Dumbest thing I read today.. I'd rather gamble on signing Matthew Stanford as a free agent when romo contract expires. His expires when romos does. He is a Dallas native too...

Evidently you don't hear your own thoughts because believing that the gamble on a QB past his prime without any significant accomplishments on his resume is a better option should have been the dumbest thing you heard today..

5 QBs have thrown for 5,000 yards in a season. Manning, Brady, Brees, Marino and Stafford.
