The problem as I see it, is that there's somewhat of a Petitti backlash on this board. For a while, it was pretty obvious that some people were posting with the sole intention of getting Pittdawg's attention, as if it would somehow bring them closer to a player on their favourite team. Posts like 'hey Pittdawg, make sure you tell Rob just how much we love him at Cowboyszone!" were becoming fairly routine, especially during the early part of the season. So once that ploy become a bit too obvious, it seemed that the pendulum swung too far in the other direction and certain posters began to 'tell it like it is', almost to the point of exaggerating Petitti's struggles, thereby showing a cold, steely objectivity, one not swayed by the presence of family members.
As is usually the case, we need to be somewhere in the middle. Petitti deserves equal parts praise and criticism. Many announcers have had good things to say about him (granted we can't take their word as gospel but at least they're unaffected by Cowboyszone bias). However, he has clearly struggled recently (along with a number of other more experienced players.) I'm all for drafting the best OT available next year and getting the line sorted out. At the same time, given that we know there are relatives posting here, sharing insights and providing valuable information (ex. the news of Parcells' family tragedy), it might not hurt to temper the rhetoric a little. Now I'm not above making fun of players or coaches (Dave Campo will always be the mad leprechaun to me) but there's a difference between jokingly calling a guy a clown and aggresively saying he sucks 'in front of' family members who are likely suffering every bit as much as we are.
All that being said, I seriously doubt Pittdawg has given this whole thing more than a few seconds thought after first reading it. Let's hope his son will display a similar resolve and work through this tough time.
