Chocolate Lab said:You know, guys... Although Parcells obviously wants to win every single game, IMO he is building this team for next year. Do you think he really expects to win the Super Bowl this year with so many rookies and a brand new defensive scheme? He and Jeff Ireland have mentioned several times how much better the rookies will be next year. And if you remember, when Rogers got hurt again and it was obvious Parcells was giving up on him, rather than going out and getting a stopgap vet who would have been better in the short term, he pretty much made Rob the man right away. Why do you think he decided to do that?
Point being, Rob is a rookie, and all rookies have tough times. Parcells knows this as well as anyone, yet he went with him anyway. I personally suspect that losing all that weight so quickly was tough, and that Rob will be a completely different player after a full offseason of lifting and conditioning -- not to mention experience -- next year.
I think Parcells is playing to win this year, I just think like Juke said, there were too many holes to fix in one year. The offensive line needed to be fix, first priority was right guard and tackle. The guards looked much better than the offensive tackles in free agency so Jones/Parcells went for Rivera and hoped Tucker/Rogers/Petitti could hold down the fort at right tackle. Rogers was a bust. Petitti was a surprise. We were still managing until Flozell went down. Even Jones/Parcells admitted it was one of the injuries that they felt couldn't happen if the Cowboys were to succeed. Sometimes winning those Super Bowls is luck. It's "may the healthiest team win" in parity.
