Petrino Resigns from Falcons - Going to Arkansas

If I am Arthur Blank I get the jump on all the other teams and go after Cowher right now.

I'm not sure but I think cowher has to be "retired" for at least one year before he can be hired by another team. Didn't he still have a year left on his Pitt deal? If so atlanta would have to give some kind of compensation.

Yes, but there is no rush to hire the next coach. Atlanta will wait until the season ends.

Andy Reid once he is excused from the Eagles.

Geez, I just thought about it and it is possible(even remotely) that 3 teams in the NFC East are looking for coaches next season.

Andy Reid + southern fried food

They can reach an agreement in principle now and once the off season is here, he's free and clear. Blank can pay Cowher what he wants.

Mike Singletary interviewed for the Falcons job last year.

He's a high-integrity, enthusiastic player's coach who turned down the opportunity to coach in college a couple of weeks ago.

I can see Blank going back to him to start fresh with a young guy.

Well, I don't know who might be the next Falcons coach but the best in the business, if you want to rebuild a franchise, is doing color work right now. He's not cheap and he would require total control but for the right price, he has been known to come out of retirement.

Lord knows that Blank hs more money then God.

Can you imagine if Jimmy had bailed on us after '89? Did Petrino expect a ready-made team or something?

It's not as if the northeast is full of healthy foods. Reid may get more outdoor exercise in the warmer Atlanta climate.

He apparently 'phoned' in his resignation instead of meeting face to face. I'd be a bit peeved if I were Falcons' upper management and the guy acted like he was ordering a pizza instead of leaving a whole organization out to dry.

But wouldn't that be considered tampering if his rights still belonged to Pittsburgh? As far as compensation, I was talking about what Atlanta would have to give Pittsburgh.

I used to like the idea of hiring a successful college head coach, mainly because of Jimmy's success in Dallas.

But after watching Butch Davis flame out, Dennis Erickson struggle for two franchises and seeing Nick Saban and Petrino jump ship when things got tough, I wouldn't touch one of those guys with a 10-foot pole.

I think the difference between the NFL and college football is more pronounced than ever before.

Two different worlds.

He probably didn't expect the freaking disaster that he ended up with.

Seriously, with the Vick stuff, he really has a reasonable out there.

Really it has been that way for a very long time. There are very few coaches that have made that jump successfully. Some of the ones that have done well also had experience as assistant coaches in the NFL, so they had some familiarity on how things worked. Jimmy Johnson was one of those rare exceptions. Most good NFL coaches learn their trade as assistants. The NBA is the same way. Very few college basketball coaches can make that direct jump to the pros.

Also, I don't like the idea of hiring a college coach and also giving him the GM duties. Heck, I don't like that for any coach. Just too much to do for either job much less having to do both. I think that was Butch Davis' biggest problem. He should never have been GM.

Jimmy isn't going to leave Fox. He's enjoying being able to go fishing 5 or 6 days a week. Plus he sucked at dealing with the salary cap.

Jimmy Johnson is the lone college coach in my life time to leave the college game and school the NFL, however it is noteworthy that his success all came prior to full-fledged free agency and a salary cap and NFL expansion to 32 teams which deludes the draft talent pool.

Johnson failed in Miami, he took over a mediocre wildcard team and left them a mediocre wildcard team

Steve Spurrior was hype of JJ proportions and he failed with similar flare as the Soviet attempts at a moon landing.

Nick Saban inherited a bad team, made them competitive losers then bolted out of town presumably with a reality check that the NFL was going to get the best of him.

Petrino has now followed suit after a rude awakening.

Les Miles will probably be the next to fail at the pro level in the coming years.

You're right. And on top of that, I think there's less incentive to even try the NFL than ever before. I heard on a radio show a couple of weeks ago that ten years ago, there were something like five or six college coaches making a million dollars a year. Now there are something like fifty or sixty. There are literally ten times as many making a million dollars, and some of those aren't even winning coaches.

So really, with much more work to do in the pros, why even try the NFL?

I always thought Mike Zimmer would make an excellent head coach. He's a great 4-3 guy and all his players seem to like him.

He was just out of his element with the 3-4 and in addition to that his hands were tied by Parcells. Why do you think he bolted immediately after the season was over? Even before Parcells resigned?

I hope he gets the job. He deserves it.

Herschel Walker pretty much doomed the Vikings.
