I'm not dismissing his up and down performances, his ball security or his maturity level. They all need to improve. But I am willing to give him two things. Time and the benefit of the doubt.
Honestly, would you bet $5,000 on the over at 96 on number of games before Tony wins his first playoff game?
Not me.
Peyton had the luxury of starting at 22 years of age. Romo was 26 when he became the starter. Obviously i can't predict when Romo will win his first playoff game (since it would be nothing more than a random guess), but he can't afford to go 96 games since by that time he'll be 30 or possibly even 31. Basically there's more pressure on him to win now. Granted, more QB's these days can still be very effective in their mid to late 30's (Favre last year, Collins and Warner this year), but in the NFL nothing should ever be taken for granted. Look at Marino, following his Super Bowl loss in his sophmore season, i'm sure that there were plenty of Dolphins (not to mention other NFL) fans who were certain that he would undoubtedly win one day. Look at McNabb today. It seems like only yesterday when his team was consistantly on top and everyone predicted that they would bring the Lombardi to Philly. Today mor ethan half the fanbase wants to blow the team up and start fresh.
In conclusion, i'm not stating one way or another if Romo will win a playoff game or more importantly a Super Bowl, since i don't know. What i do know is that this being the NFL you have to capitalize every opportunity, especially considering that with today's emphasis on parity, a contender one year is nothing but a pretender the next. Consequently, time is not a luxury that can be afforded.
