I blame the media for creating this situation. The Cowboys most likely always intended to trade Romo but then the media started rumors of Romo's imminent release and suddenly all likely suitors are thinking they can get him as a much cheaper UFA.
When in doubt, blame the media. You know, the same thing that you draw your own narrative from. Darn them!

Not just explaining to the fan base
The Texans coaching staff will be looking for a new job as well
Both these teams need Romo in the worst way and will trade for him if we have the gumption to hold on

Things tend to get done when the FO and ownership feels the heat more than when the coaching staff feels the heat.

The evil media didn't force the owner to go on an hour long rant about doing right by Romo at the Combine.

Why can't we hold on to him?
He is being well paid for this year by any standard and is under contract that he signed of his free will

If we release him we not only get nothing in return but we have to pay him AND we have to pay 2-4 million to the back up QB we do sign

How does that make any sense at all?

Because that's not how the league works. If a player demands a trade and you have a spot for him then fine, tell him to shut up you can keep him. This happens all the time, it happened to Leary last season.

Holding on to a player that everyone knows around the league will not be on your team next season against their will just for a trade that may or may not happen is an unethical business practice.

How would you like if your employer came to you and said "You're going to be fired but you're not allowed to look for another job until I find a suitable replacement"?

The thing is, I am under the impression that Romo does not have that much value give his age and history the last two seasons, so if we hold onto him, we are just hoping another QB around the league breaks a leg so we can get some decent trade value.

You can't just hold on to him if you can't work out a trade. With limited suitors and Romo's history...he's not going to have teams jumping up and down for him. Holding onto him against his will with no intention on keeping himsets an example of how we treat players to the league and the locker room.

I hope we get something. I don't think we know the whole side of the story. For all we know, Romo is the ultimate team guy and wants Dallas to get something in return.
Yes, that's right... the Cowboys are terrible for signing Romo to a hefty contract and expecting him to fulfil it.

No one promised Tony he would always be a starter. He conceded the job last season so he needs to pipe down and cash his checks.

From my understanding Romo and Jerry sat down on Wednesday where Tony was informed he was being released on Thursday, most all Dallas and national writers have confirmed such meeting.
Something happend on Thursday that changed that probable outcome.

IMO he will be released in the next couple of days and sign with Houston.

Complete nonsense. No backbone. Player worship.

He's got a spot on this team. As the backup QB.

It felt good the end of last season having that depth, didn't it? Let's have that again. It's much more beneficial to the Cowboys than releasing him for feelz.

couldn't Romo just retire to get out of his contract and sign with another team?

Depending on their definition of "do right" it isn't doing him wrong by continuing to pay him more than anyone else will and expect him to be a good solider and shut the hell up.

I guess the question is from what we know right now; what is best for the Cowboys?

Exactly, what's better, getting a 4th/5th round pick and take the entire cap hit this year or release him, save $5 million and divide that cap hit in two years??

Nope. It's not that easy. If I'm not mistaken, if he retires, he's still technically part of the team and under contract until that contract would have been up.

But the idea would not be to fire him
He is valuable as a back up in case Dak struggles or gets injured so at worst he is an insurance policy that you have already paid for

He is being paid very well
If we release him we pay him and even more to the new back up. Why would we do that?

Value of something is defined by its value to the buyer and is relative value based on need

There is no urgency to release him and holding him is almost definitely going to create a trade market because the Texans cannot justify going into the season with Savage as their starter

Players go to teams where they get paid or can win a championship. Our keeping it trading Romo increases our chances of winning relative to just releasing him

Releasing him makes absolutely zero sense except to make him happy

They are making stuff up....yet again

They met on Tuesday and Romo told Jerry there was no pressure to rush right away.
Jerry's words.
Exactly, when there's no news, create news. All you got to do is throw in a "sources" or "someone familiar with" and you can stir the pot with whatever you want.

Fake news all day. I bet Romo listed both Denver and Houston as his choice and Jerry is going to make one of them happen for Tony.

Jerry has a history of respect from his former players. He's well liked for the most part because he's straight with them. I don't expect anything different.

The offseason CowboysZone discussion about what will happen to Romo is shaping up... well... it's shaping up almost exactly as I expected.

That's a crap load of speculation on your behalf. We don't know what was said at said meeting and the media doesn't either but that didn't stop them from commencing to make up rumors of Romo's imminent release. They ruined his tradability for the time being but that will be remedied when a contending team loses it's QB to injury.
