I keep hearing this "country club atmosphere" thing, but players always come out and say the opposite. One player's issues undermine what all the other players say?
Sometimes it's more self-gratifying engaging in hyperbole than being literal.

when your not winning no one should be given slack. it is one thing having a championship team and a guy screws up that slack is given. When you are struggling just to get to the post season no one should be considered untouchable, evidently they are not doing that great or you would be competing for championships.

The Cowboys' so-called "country club atmosphere" is something that Jimmy Johnson laid claim to years ago. With that being the case, as we all know, his opinion routinely carries a strong tendency to be taken as factual among many, if not most, of the Cowboys' fans.

I honestly believe the Dallas practices and work expectations now being required by our coaches are, at least, satisfactorily challenging. It seems to me that the area that reflects a country club atmosphere would be in the area of the altogether too frequent lack of discipline. That's nothing new.

I believe some fans considered Johnson's phrase as an exaggeration to emphasize a franchise culture less structured than the typical, more successful clubs. I think even Johnson would admit engaging in hyperbole--from time to time.

I don't think he intended it as hyperbole at all. He wasn't one to overstate what he thought but rather got right to the point. There were coaches before JG came along that allowed lax practices and credited players for more than they deserved. Son of Bum immediately comes to mind. The lack of discipline before, during and after his tenure was also extremely lax and we can thank Jerry in no small measure for leading that charge.

TO was Jerry kid, he no longer plays in Dallas and Garrett played a big part in that.

Yea but that was a little different. He was tearing the whole team apart. He was having problems with Romo and Witten as well. I don't think anybody was surprised that that eventually happened. That's why we needed to take advantage of having TO and win a SB fast. And of course we didn't.

Well we know that McClain could not be fined or cut because he missed OTA. He can be and I think he will be released due to this drug suspension. As for Influence Jason has I think he does or at least as much as any coach under Jerry. BP did not want TO to begin with would not even call him by name only saying "The Player" and of course when BP wanted Spencer as the #1 pick it was Jerry who listened to Ireland and took Ware over Spencer. However BP has said Jerry will listen to the argument being made and he will make the final call yet BP relationship with Jerry (According to BP is tight) Given how outspoken BP has been through out his career I doubt he would be just blowing smoke as opposed to telling it like it is.

originally mac engle wrote that he missed mini camp and that is why he was so mad or whatever. then he was corrected and the article was also to show he missed ota.

i don't get why mcclain was brought back and i don't get why they can't get through to jerry about this kind of thing. He really must not be that bright.

however every team has guys smoking weed or getting in trouble for guns or assault or whatever. This is just engle doing what he always does, whine. I hear him on the radio here all the time and he loves to praise the steelers and patriots but they have all kinds of morons on their teams also.

I think that if over the last 10 years the Cowboys had pretty much been a lock to make the post season every year and made the NFCCG almost half those years then they and their FO and coaches and players would be cut the same slack

If anything, given the terrible performance of the team over the last 20 years the entire organization needs to be taken to task way more than they are by the media

We disagree. I believe Johnson knows how an actual country club operates and the atmosphere it generates. Accounting for his fame and relative wealth, it would not surprise me that he himself is a member of a country club (if not several), so I would assume he knows how a real one is perceived from personal experience. Granted, he was not and is not lying when he describes, for example, less constructive and productive player practices, but I don't believe he is saying such in a literal sense... unless coaches and players were enjoying mint juleps with Jerry Jones every two or three hours each day. And yes, admittedly, that was a bit of hyperbole on my part.

I get tired of replying to that same criticism, but you're right that it's pretty much been exploded by every FA that walks through the building. Thornton, most recently. The answer to that is either 'silence,' 'but what do you expect them to say' or a pivot to an argument that the overwork is why our players seem to get hurt so much. All of which are very unsatisfying.

Let me simplify this so that there is no confusion

Garret's calling card has been his "process"
Any process is only as god as the results it produces
After 6 years the results are .500
The process has clearly failed
Time for a new process

You mean you disagree. I seriously doubt you're speaking for everyone in using the word "we." Garrett certainly isn't operating the current team in a manner that suggests a "country club" atmosphere when it comes to OTC, minicamps, TC and practices. Too many veterans, players from other teams and current Dallas players have testified to that in spades. Conversely, there's a reason why Wade Phillips' camps were called "Camp Cupcake."

I stand by my assertion that training and practices aren't lax, whereas discipline obviously is and has been lax for far too long. JG's practices are more demanding than those of many of his predecessors. Discipline (or the lack thereof) still sucks, however.

Not to mention most of the roster. Except of course the handful who are trying to take his job. The were probably happy he was in Alabama doing his best Bob Marley impression.

Not saying you are not on top of it but I never saw any player quotes. Got a link?

I stated "we" as in you and me. We are engaged in conversation. That is how I used the pronoun.

Additionally, I am not in disagreement with your assessment of Garrett's methods, player testimonials or the level of discipline at that. My apologies if that's how my comments were perceived for that was not my intention. My lone assertion remains that Johnson is not being literal when using the phrase "country club atmosphere."

Now I am not a member of any country club (nor do I wish to be) but I have personal knowledge of how several operate within my area. I have also read, heard or seen how Jerry Jones and several of his head coaches (before the Garrett era) have conducted daily franchise affairs from afar. The two separate operations are not one and the same in my opinion. There is a marked difference between the two in the actual sense, which is my contention.

Put yourself in the shoes of the other 89 guys who were sweating in the Texas heat to make the team, instead of the guy sitting home on the couch. What you think?

if they want to do that fine.

The team has not been terrible over the past 10 years however. Throwing this 20 year thing out is pretty odd to me.

So, according to you, before Garrett came into the picture, Jerry and his coaches conducted daily franchise affairs from afar . . . interesting. I know Jerry traveled considerably and still does but that's really nothing new. He has always claimed he has been in close contact with his coaches and others involved in the operations of the franchise. What separate operations are you referring to in particular? In terms of closeness, I'm quite sure Garrett and he are on closer terms personally, if that's what you meant.

As far as Jimmy's 'country club remark' I surely suppose it can be taken literally or otherwise, although I took it to mean things were too lax and friendly.

I think that you don't have any actual player quotes and are making assumptions about other guys feelings based on your own sensibilities. Which is ok, I understand why you think that. But you presented it as a fact, but it's your opinion.
