From Stephen: "You pointed it out, free safety, if the right spot were there would we have done something, absolutely. But it just didn’t work out that way and we certainly didn’t want to push the issue. We had to make a few tough decisions on whether to go with another need or the free safety need. But we feel like, overall, we’re very comfortable and confident where we are. But there’s still a lot of work to do between now and the start of the season.

“We’ve got some really good football players on this team. I think the competition levels will be high, and who knows — at the end of training camp, if you’re real strong in a particular area, you might could do something along those lines, as well, in terms of trading a player for a player."

Interesting. Think they still might entertain a trade of Irving for Thomas? Did SEA do much to replace the loss of Avril/Bennet on their roster? With us adding the DL via the Swtizer trade and looking at another DT in McClain and with the prospect of Gregory coming back, with Lawrence and Collins and Crawford already on the roster and Taco coming into that second year...I'd be down for spreading a bit of that depth around to the S position if SEA were interested. It's two impact players, one older, the other a knucklehead. Thomas is a better player than Irving, but not by all that much, and Irving is younger. Both guys are on one year deals. Our fronts are similar....it makes some sense.

SJ’s basically admitting they didn’t do anything in the draft or FA to address S.
They’d better not do anything stupid to correct it, like trading Irving for ET.

So dallaz develops Irving after poaching him from Ks..dallas Has Irving on a good deal this year, and they simply have more need at the tackle position than the Fs..The Contract for Thomas is not worth it...I know, you guise are real horny on Thomas, but he is not the same player he was several years ago..And There are plenty of hungrey mouths to feed.

Woods, and Chidobe played well last year for rookies, Chidobe was late coming on from the hammies..We need to let the kids play...

YEAH been nice to draft a Decent FS..but they didnt pursue..I think because they believe Woods is workable there with HEATH.. Plus Chidobe and Jones can play..PERSONALLY I think a one tech a bigger need..Sign McClain, and dont do Seattle any favors..

YEAH, the first Philly game Ugly..Especially considering where Collins playing at the 1tech..Irving is better taking advantage of mismatchez and Collins is a much better 3tech..In situations like that better to have a true one tech and get irving in on Passing downs...Not nec he bad on running downs but Kelce pretty good in the middle. PUTTING two fatties in the middle on running downs a better play.

WAIT.. That reprt neglected to mention Lee was out...lolol..Several players were out for the Cowboys..Lolol

Actually, Heath has been turning out to be a solid safety. I've grown quite confident in him as a fan.

Exactly. If it wasnt in there opinion important to them to draft somebody, than it sure as haides not a priority now. Stephen takes chances and likes to waffle some times.

THOMAS is not going to be the difference in the Cowboys going to the Sb...Let this bad deal die!

(FYI, it's shoo-in, not shoe-in. I know that because I made that mistake once, too. It doesn't make sense, but that's what it is.)

Ah! That actually makes some sense, knowing the word ‘shoo.’ Thanks for the explanation.

That's a hard one to answer. They're both pretty significant leaps, imo.

Ward and Ealy could definitely factor into this. They're both built like the 3Techs we've had success with, but both are complete question marks right now.

Even Taco really. Hes the same build. What if some guys step up at DE, Gregory/Ealy looks good at end, he could even be a candidate at the 3 if he shows an affinity for it. A pass rush line of Ealy/Gregory at RDE, Lawrence at LDE, and Taco sliding into the 3 could be formidable. If Taco can be the guy at 3 I wouldn't mind playing him there at all, but we dont know. You could still give him some DE snaps like Irving does.

With Irving kinda in limbo for next year, and need to bolster inside pass rush, we should get to see a few of those guys getting reps in camp.

It is kind of a tough one.

I think they’d be pretty happy with starting Collins/McClain, and with an 8 or 9 man rotation that doesn’t include Irving if hey had to go that route. Assuming the land Thomas in return. We at least have a lot of options along the front. They probably want to see somebody step up first though. Irving is a hell of a pressure player to try to replace.

What is there to admit? It’s not as if we weren’t already aware the Cowboys didn’t acquire a safety. It’s really that he was saying they looked for an opportunity get a safety, but didn’t find something they felt made sense.

I don’t think ET is a better player than Irving at all
Irving can take over a game
Both will be leaving their teams next year but unless you can get ET for a future pick I don’t see it happening
DT’s who can rush the passer are rarer than a 40 year old virgin

And even if they were equal in talent there is the age factor. This is a young, talent team with the core only now just getting into their prime years. I’d prefer we keep it that way.

I say we should roll with the young guns we have at safety. Trail by fire is the best way to make those with potential, rise to it.

Who is they? Your thoughts are not a "they" lol

For me, "they" are these reporters - like Charean Williams in this case - just when I've moved on from the whole "Earl Thomas-to-Dallas trade", someone on either side says something like this that indicates that they might still be looking to do something.

And then someone like @Idgit posts a very intriguing hypothetical, and I'm "right back in the mess!"

Trading for ET n signing Vaccaro seems doable. Earl's contract tho...DAL paying double digits to a FS? Idk.
Thomas AND vacarro? First of all it’s funny some of you think Vacarro is an automatic starter. And if he isn’t why would he come here? Heath has a better year last year than him.

Trading Irving for Thomas? C'mon.

Yea, let's trade a 25 year old 3 tech that fits exactly what Rod wants out of his DTs for a 29 year old safety...
And then when we have only 1 legit passrusher in Lawrence watch how good Thomas is when he doesn't have a great passrush in front of him.
