It would be nice to have Dak signed to a team friendly contract right now. I think the Cowboys made a reasonable offer. Dak didn’t accept it. That’s business.
Dak chose to bet on himself. He has played well enough to earn a second contract with the Cowboys. Has he earned the right to be paid the most in the history of the NFL? No. And yet, by all accounts the Cowboys have offered him that much money. And so far Dad has turned it down.
I don’t blame Dak for wanting to get paid, and to his credit he is not talking about it in the media all the time like Dez or Tank did.
On the other hand Dak seems to have gone from “I’m not asking to be the highest paid player in football” to being the highest paid player in the history of the NFL is not enough.
If the Cowboys and Dak are fighting over years I would get a 4 year deal done and move on. I would also be looking for another QB to start at the end of Dak’s contract. I don’t you will be able to reasonably sign Dak at the end of this second deal.
Even on a 4 year deal, you would have his rights 2 more years than that by using the tag.
I am a Dak fan. I think he is better than most of you do. And if the Cowboys have offered to pay him the most money in the history of the NFL and he has turned it down, then we seriously need to look at moving on.
If Dak won’t sign a deal that is on the table I would make him play under the tag this year, and evaluate whether he is worth a second tag at the end of this year.
For the record, I don’t think Andy Dalton is as good of a QB as Dak is, but I do think that with the right coaching, he might win us as many games as Dak would.
This Dalton signing may turn out to be the best Cowboys signing in a long time if he can still play at a reasonably high level, because the Cowboys warm fuzzy feeling about Dak is going to evaporate on or about July 15 if things dont change.
