Few years I think you're being generous, I don't see the guy making the final cut and he won't get picked up by anyone else. He was a waste of a pick when drafted and will leave the NFL this year while never playing a meaningful down.

The only reason he hasn't been cut is because he's been injured giving Dallas options to try and develop the guy. Small school guy who knows if he was ever going to develop. I don't really recall where the drafts/scouts had him.

But my really point was that there must be something fairly significant going on in the guy's personal life for the abrupt retirement following the cancellation of the wedding. This is probably more serious than it looks on the surface for the guy. At least, that's my guess.

I'm right there with you. It's pretty weird for a players decision to come like this, unless he's suddenly decided he's lost his desire, or there are health or mental health issues or some kind of personal crisis. Very odd.

Sucks to hear about this. Phil's a really nice guy and I honestly thought he did well when given the opportunity.

I'd love to know who thought Costa was a starting calibre center in that FO. It was pure hope that he would become even a back up level center. The poor guy got blown up. Must be the same guy (s) who thought Alan Ball was a good fit as a NFL FS, or Matt Johnson, or Heath. Hope is not a real strategy.

BTW, that next stiff is Matt Johnson. Can't play. Won't play. Will be out of the league in a few years max.

Wait for it. Apparently I have a 50/50 chance of being right.

So I've heard you say this about Johnson a few times and I've been curious. How did you determine he's a stiff? Have you seen tape of him? And not youtube highlights, because you're far too savvy to evaluate a player based on youtube highlights. And he's barely been on the practice field for the Cowboys, not really enough for a fan to evaluate him unless that fan has been present at those few practices he's been healthy for.

So what formed your opinion? Have tape of him in college? Because that "he's a stiff" opinion has to come from actually seeing him play, more than just internet highlights, yes?

And I say this as someone who has no idea if Johnson can play, not having actually seen him play.

Just curious.

Short branch... Hard not to make that call.. lol
  • The average career length for a player who makes a club’s opening-day roster (active/inactive roster or injured reserve) in his rookie season is 6.0 years.

Is that with the same team, tho? Matt Johnson's tenure with Dallas has been an anomaly, not the average reality for most players.

Anyone know if Costa has any kind of history of substance abuse? It's the first thing that came to my mind when I heard this news. Maybe he's trying to work out some demons... If that's the case I truly wish him the best.

I am far more right than these guys. It's not even close.

Phil Costa's career has now gone exactly as I called it and they just. can't. stand. it.

So you said he as going to get signed to a free agent deal and then retire in the offseason? Can you pull that one up in your history or something? I think I am going call Bullschlitz on that one.

His decision to retire while under contract is not at all what you were suggesting when you said he would be out of the league in a few years. You were just sure he would be but and just disappear. That isn't what happened.

The sad part? They won't learn anything from it. They'll tell us we don't know and that the coaches must see something in the next stiff. And then when we're proven right, again, they'll call us a hater and ask us how we could root against a Cowboy.

The sad part is that they can see how bad a player like Costa really is , but they refuse to believe their eyes because he is s Cowboy and Jerry said he is a good player. I used to be blind, but now I see. I figure my eyes are better then Jerry's and I trust my judgement much more than his.

I don't think any player should be pigeon holed right away. Look at players like Romo and Brady or a Waters. Players can develop and to come out and state from day one that this player won't develop is just absurd especially if you are not privy to every practice, meeting and weight training that the player is involved in. Is it fun to try and predict what a player will be? Sure, but don't come back pumping your chest over being "right" about a player that the team and fans had hope for. If anything it only hurt the team because they needed to spend more resources to find not 1 player but multiple players because the player failed to develop. Obviously the guy had some ability that not only Dallas saw but other teams saw it as well. He retired on his own he wasn't cut so making any statement about the guy would be stupid.

The players that show the ability to develop have flashes of their ability. Costa did not.

Ok, but whose pumping up Matt Johnson...to do anything? Nobody cares about Matt Johnson. lol

To a search on threads about Johnson. It is amazing how that stiff got so many threads created about him.

I'm not defending Costa. I don't really care either way. Sucks he didn't develop into a solid starter here. I don't get the need for someone to always feel the need to be right and need to have a pat on the back over some small player. I'm sorry but you only have a 50/50 chance at being right and if I were to believe anyone I would surely believe LA and NN before some internet board wannabe know it all. JMO

Considering the crap that Risen takes, it should be pointed out that he is right . He gets bashed constantly when he gives his opinion, but when he is proved right, those that bashed him don't want to talk about it. That speaks volumes about the haters.

Are there still some of you guys that are withholding judgement on Costa? I miss those arguments.
I don't. Told them then, it was a waste of time discussing anything about him, kowalski (i refuse to call him killer), and nagy. Three bums that took way too much webspace on CZ.

Hmmmmm .... could this possibly suggest Jerral Wayne and Co. are slightly behind the NFL curve...after all the trench game has been winning the NFL game for over a Decade and a half.

Behind the NFL curve? They are behind some of the CZ poster's curve.
