I mean we say that but we have no idea if he was high on someones else's board. I know at the time I Thought there was no way Jack and Jaylon would be taken that early but I for sure didn't see Jaylon going before Jack.
Since we don't know, we have to go with what we do know, and that is we took a player with a devastating injury near the top of the second round. :(

Usually when you see reaches its either a situation where the Cowboys got tipped off that someone else wanted that player or they got some bad advice lol. I think that's what happened with Wright this year and why we took him so early....Same as Fredericks as well.

I never understood the Cowboys hubris about Jaylon's overly optimistic prognosis. Many teams didn't even have Jaylon on their draft board at all. Taking him in the 2nd round didn't make any sense.

Jerry the Gambler wants to prove he's smarter than everyone.

The Jaylon hype pre-injury likely wasn't warranted. He had all the tools, but was very much a finesse player. He needs a really clean area to work with, or he just gets demolished and can't get off a block.

this is so pathetic...another “don’t believe what your eyes see, please believe some numbers instead”. If you think Jaylon is a good linebacker, or an nfl starting linebacker, you should watch soccer instead of football. Because you are clueless about what a good football player looks like if you’re trying to convince us he’s a good linebacker. You know what you can add to your numbers ? All the video clips of Jaylon blowing assignments or running himself out of plays or trying to avoid physical contact.

I hate to say it but in the NFL you never pay players with catastrophic injuries that take two years to come back from. Drafting him was not the issue because in his first four years he was a solid linebacker. It is just money his making that kills the deal. Let’s not make the same mistake with LVE.
No, using a 2nd round pick on him is the issue.

The head team physician for the Dallas Cowboys Football Dr. DANIEL E. COOPER, M.D. might have been too optimistic about Jaylon's prognosis. Drafting him in the 2nd round was a terrible reach. Extending him should have never been a consideration. The Cowboys really botched their 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2016 draft. Ramsey and Henry was the way to go.

His bad knee has nothing to do with his inability to correctly read plays and what holes to plug. More times than not he's plugging VACATE holes so cut all the BS and as for some teams not having him on their draft boards that's horse-sh^t! Smith struggles because he's not a smart football player..........

And it was even an early 2nd round pick. But I'll take those kinds of chances. It's hard to even sniff a top 5 player. Getting one on the cheap is a big win. And it looked like we had in 2018. It seems to have been close to working in actual fact, and not merely an odds against chance.

It can be both. His leg is ****** and he's not very smart at the same time.

The some of the DTs that went in the 2nd round that year were 1st rounders in other drafts due to the number of DTs in that draft. Chris Jones is now a 2x All-Pro.

I'm a broken record on this but still to this day it never made sense.

1. We go with the win now pick with Zeke in round 1.
2. We then go with the maybe he'll recover, the doctor thinks so but to be determined pick with Smith in round 2.
2b. Yes, hindsight, but look at the next 4 picks: Hunter Henry*, Myles Jack, Chris Jones(DT) and Xavien Howard.

Hunter Henry was talked about cause Witten was old, but still playing. Talented but can't stay healthy for long.
Myles Jack was the opposite of Smith, where his long term playing time was questionable but short term he was ready.
Chris Jones and Howard are known as one of the better players at their position. We went with Collins in the 3rd and the following offseason we let most of the secondary walk and took Awuzie and Lewis back to back in the 17 draft.

Sure, Jaylon Smith was a top talent, pre injury. But his pick never made sense due to the recovery time and the unknown recovery of his injury and trying to win with an injury prone Romo.
One thing to take a flier on day 3, another to take a risk at #34 on a LB clearly a year + out also when you have Sean Glass Lee.

Been saying the same on this board for 3 years. We pay and draft all the flash positions while neglecting the defense. Jerry never seems to understand that you need to get a day 1 starter with that second round pick not a project you can draft later. You can't draft someone in round 2 that's not going to contribute immediately when your trying to build a football team.

now, do the same on passing plays.....I said in another comment as well. he can be effective in run stopping if he hits the right hole, but in pass defense and if play gets outside he is a big liability because he has no change of direction agility or speed.......DCs will find a weakness and expose it...to death

Well, lookie here, our Cowboys linebacker will have to again commit and train...train...train, as when he was a rook.I won't sell him short just yet.
