He didn't exactly distinguish himself on the goal line series, but that doesn't mean he's having a **** year.

On that run Barber should have followed his lead blocker(Cricket). He had a TD but for what ever reason he didn't follow Cricket.

not sure i get this one.

i never hear his name called out for false start, holding or hands to the face.
i never hear his name called out for missing a block or allowing a sack.

maybe that's your point - we just never hear his name but i can tell you i'm pretty darned tired of hearing flozell and kozier's name all the time.

free i'm still giving some leeway cause of experience.

how many sacks has bigg given up?
how many penalties has he had?

not sure where you're getting the "free pass" from or why he should be called out here.
funny you mention that, i was just looking up FS stats.. Davis has just ONE false start all year. not bad at all.

BUT...the 4th down play, the LB that shot the gap came between Bigg and Gurode. What didn't help was that Gurode and BIgg were both already being pushed back when he slid in between them... have to give credit to the SD defense there, they played the run on goal to go from the 1 perfectly.

I don't think Bigg is having a bad season, but he certainly doesn't get to the second level when run blocking. He pulls a lot also, and appears to be pretty good there, but again, his first contact with the defense is usually his last.

For all the blame to go around (and there's plenty), one guy who seems to be getting a free pass is Leaonard Davis.

After a teriffic first season in Dallas, his level of play seems to have regressed. And for what he's being paid, he should be a dominant force and I don't think the Cowboys are getting the bang for their buck with him.

For such a large player he continues to come up small. And, given that he's got an inexperienced player lining up next to him, I would expect his level of play to rise up. I haven't seen that, quite the opposite in fact.

For a guy over 350 lbs, it's amazing how often he disappears and you don't even realize he's out there. For a guy getting paid what he is, that's not good enough.

So while we're all lamenting another frustrating season and throwing folks under the bus, let's not forget Leonard Davis - the invisible giant.

Stash is right, Davis has not had a very good yr, at least not compared to the last two seasons. He's missed more blocks and gave up more pressure/sacks...not sure if he is playing hurt too, but he definitely is not as good as he was the previous two seasons IMO.

That's exactly what Broaddus was saying on GAC earlier today.

BTW, I was never a Cricket fan, but he's really had a good year and turned himself into a very good player.

Anyone know why he's called Cricket?

In his defense, Bigg has absolutely demolished some linebackers while pulling this year. :laugh2:

I agree that he hasn't played very well this year and I actually think he has gotten worse each year here which doesn't make much sense for a guy playing a new position. He hasn't been called for many penalties but he has given up quite a few sacks/pressures, his run blocking has been mediocre and his ability to make blocks in open space is almost non-existent. If there isn't someone in that hole that he is pulling towards, he is likely blocking air.

I think Bigg would probably be better off at OT where he can be a bit more isolated and just asked to work on the guy across the ball from him a bit more. He wouldn't have to worry against blocking at the second level. He could be the natural straight ahead mauler that he is and not be as exposed against speed rushers on the strong side. People actually forget that he was a pretty good tackle in Arizona and not at all the turnstile that he was made out to be.

The notions about moving Gurode the guard also have some merit but it is such a loss to lose his power at the Center position which is elite. It may be tot the betterment of the unit, though. Gurode could be freed up to pull more and maul more without having to worry about getting off the snap cleanly. He could also be relieved of making the line calls.

I actually kind of like this lineup for next year assuming we can find a FA center:

LT: Free
LG: Kosier
C: FA
RG: Gurode
RT: Davis

This gives our line a power side and a finesse side, two guards who can pull and block at the second level, a mobile LT and LG who can get out and block on screen passes really well.

Most importantly, I think it could give the line more cohesion where the whole can at least equal the sum of the parts if we can find an appropriate Center. This would hopefully be a mobile, smart center who can dig in a bit even if he isn't the brute that Gurode is. If we can't find the center, I would suggest we keep Gurode and center and bring in the best guard we can find in FA or a high draft pick.

I agree.

I was an advocate of replacing him this offseason and I admit that he's done a very good job.

I just wish that he would have some (any) involvement in the offense where he touches the ball.

Even if it's simply one catch or carry here and there, just to give the defense something to think about.

And what about our best OL (Colombo)? Should we waive him or move him to backup

I guess it was Bigg's fault they called a trap or pull play also, everyone knew it was going to Barber, I knew, you knew it, and the defense knew it, a 2 back set with with MB3 as FB come on, with as hard as the OC has been hammered for not sticking with the run. It was the dumbest series of plays on a goal line I have ever seen.

Hutchinson is the guy in Minnesota and that is the only place (other than Seattle that was going to sign him that year). Kemoteau (sp) is the guy in Pitt that is letting Ben get killed.

I think Oline wise (and being one in high school, and priding myself in calling out Defenses and pointing out errors in blocking during a game) we are almost putting a square peg in a round hole, our power style Oline in a finesse blocking scheme. We need more guys like Kosier and Free to pull and let the RB's be able to cut back and run more zone plays, where they run and cut. We almost need a zone blocking scheme, but that would probably mean Gurode and Bigg are gone, I think Free, Kosier and Columbo would all be talented enough to do it, the other two just aren't quick enough. Flozell is a player who might be able to do better at RG or RT than currently LT in a zone scheme. But, that is just my views. I wish I had a job on the darn team somewhere as a coach...but that won't ever happen, my name isn't Homer Simpson!
