You need to listen to the interview. Although if you've already made up your mind so you'll probably hear what you want to hear.

First, that is not a direct quote from the interview. If you listen to it, he's not saying "OK" as "introductory words." In the interview he frequently intersperses "like" and "you know" and "ummm" and "OK" throughout his sentences (as many of us do when we're speaking. And in that sentence, he says "ummm OK" right there.

The real "introductory words" that everyone seems to be ignoring are:

"People will say:"

Which clearly, as far as I'm concerned, establishes that what he's going to say next is what "people will say." And indeed, that's what people DO say about him. But don't mistake that with what he's saying about himself.

You're exactly right, DW, but what's going on here isn't exactly a rational discussion about Roy Williams' play.

It's interesting that he notes the criticism about his religion affecting his play. It's a pretty safe bet that he reads these boards. I suspect he's also got a personality that takes the criticism personally, which is a shame since most of it is pretty mindless.

He went on about how he was looking forward to the season...

Just heard the part you talked about, though. He sounds like he has no confidence when left to cover one on one.

And geez, did he almost admit that he didn't hit as big once he found religion?

At least he said he was glad about Campo being back.:

I was completely flamed on here a couple of years ago for suggesting this very thing... hmmm

I think the bashing is getting a little too hateful. JMO. I think Roy regrets causing injuries to some people and perhaps he is subconciously laying back a little because of it. Hey, I have all the respect in the world for someone being sensitive, kind, and compassionate. I think many of you would be the same way.

I'm not saying that is the whole of it. It's just likely to be a part of it. And I expect it is hard to go from one system to another. Some players just take longer to adjust. And I don't see it unusual for pro players to take a year plus to get really comfortable with the system.

I still think a lot of the problem is physical preparation with Roy. You cannot maintain that kind of edge without nearly daily hard training. And I mean hard. It takes that kind of dedication.

I have my doubts as to whether Roy can do it. Offenses have surpassed the abilities of defenses IMO. But the defenses will adjust. It is not possible for most safeties to play like CBs. If they could play like CBs then that's what they would be and not be safeties. It's just unreasonable to think 3 CBs are going to cover four or five good WRs. So I like the idea of putting more CBs on the field. The NFL is going to have to start drafting enough big CBs so they can cover these huge fast TEs and also provide adequate run support. And the current safeties are going to have to learn to cover better or be replaced by someone who can. It's that simple.

I expect fans to be fanatic. But if a Spartan can be civilized then there is no reason for fans not to be.

My thoughts on Roy, some of the things he said bothered me, but you cant take things out of context either.

Its true that we fans dont really know sometimes what coverages are called, if he is isolated on a WR, good TE or whomever.

But, it always goes back to I think what Roy Williams isnt accepting. The great Jimmy Johnson said that fatigue makes cowards out of you, and if your not in shape, you wont be on the Cowboys.

Next, reports are that the Cowboys staff have had to beg roy williams repeatedly to attend the offseasoning conditioning, which he would hardly ever do. Then last summer reports are that the only way he got in shape is doing a weight diet crash. If that is true, then Roy isnt being a true blue dallas cowboy player, He is disrespecting his fellow Cowboy players, he is disrepcting safeties that have played the game, guys like Darren Woodson, Charley Waters, Lonnie Lott, to name a few.

As far as his stating that he doesnt hit as much once he got saved, I question that too. We all know of Roger Staubach, even fans that didnt get to watch him play, they know of his legacy and his competitiveness, hard playing, Roger hated to lose period. Thats another thing I question true if these things are true, does he really care about the game like when he first came in the league and played with Darren Woodson?

I am not trying to be critical, even though it may sound like I am, I am just trying to show Roy if he does indeed read these boards, that he is letting his fellow cowboy players down, he is letting God down, because to God and Jesus, he wants you to be the best that you can be.

Like best I remember Earl Campbell that played for the Oilers, was a christian, he gave it his all, and he would knock the heck out of you, run over you and go through you. If your a christian like Roy says he is, your or should give it your all, so that your not going to let the Lord down, and yourself.

As far as Roy stating that it takes time to learn the defense, heck each year, he says that, thats a cop out, he is being paid mega bucks to work out, get in shape, study film, know the defenses. If Darren Woodson, Ronnie Lott and Charley Waters whom are all great safeties, worked hard, studied film, knew the plays, coverages, then there should be no excuse. AGain, to me, thats a cop out. Which to me, makes me start to question Roys heard, desire to really play the game.

Granted, great coaches learn their players, and put them in position to make plays. Probably true that Dave Campo needs to work with Roy, since he knows him, design defenses for him to excel and be used properly, but when Roy says like he cant cover its hard, thats a cop out, excuse, Ronnie Lott, Charley Waters, Cliff Harris, Darren Woodson, all had to cover, heck even Rodney Harrison and Lynch whom didnt have great speed, still intercepted balls, why, they worked hard, studied film and they wanted to win. Does Roy really care? Or is he just content to get his paycheck and go home, and say, people just dont understand, and I dont need to come in and work out llike the rest of the guys, I am ALL PRO.

I remember long time ago, when my dad got his hand cut off in a corn picker, and he kinda gave up on life, my mother ttoook him to a field where one of my uncles was bailing hay, my uncle tried to get him to use the tractor and bail hay, my dad said i cant, i only have one hand. My uncle, called him names under the sun, etc, made my dad mad, he got up on the tractor, didnt do real good that first day, but he came back, next day he was bailing hay better than my uncle. So, sometimes you have to question a persons manhood, to me, thats what Roy needs, someone to question his manhood and telll it like it is.

He was saying that's what some people's criticism is ("People will say ..."). He did not say that it was true.

Even if he can't articulate his position, it is quite clear what Roy is trying to do. Whether it is his going off in tangents through sermonizing, talking about the scheme, or the corners getting paid the big bucks, it all comes down to Roy isn't to be blamed.

I can understand your point with respect to Roy accepting the blame for his poor play.

But I can also understand (based on how Danny White and Redball explained it) and based on the blatant contradiction within his very statement, that Roy Williams isn't saying his faith made him soft.

That's really my point. It would be a shame for people to think that because he converted to Christianity, he is no longer a fierce player. I don't think it's that simple.

Oh yeah. Why does he continue to horse collar then? Thats how he's injured most of the players he's injured.

This is football. He gets paid to make plays and put the hammer on someone when given the opportunity. If finding god makes him not want to hit someone as hard, then retire. This is what he gets paid for, not to be sensitive, kind and compassionate. He can stop horse collaring if wants to do them things.

...more difficult for Roy with this Dallas team.

Not only us fans, but media and league's fans recognize the talent that Dallas has assembled on this team.

There are expectations abound for how far this team should perform.

We aren't talking about a team with multiple holes, but rather diagnosing the last few pieces of the puzzle.

No player on this team should take outside perception of their performance lightly.

This team is considered playoff worthy and in my experience that means greater backlash when results don't meet expectations.

All Cowboys' stars should take note.

"Please believe the hits will come as we get more comfortable with my defense, with the 3-4 and coach Phillips' way that he wants us to play. Please believe the hits will come. I mean, I'm going to have to get comfortable in this defense."
how come every single person in this thread has ignored this quote? it's like you just read a part of the quote and not the whole thing.. if anything, i thought he came out sounding very good.. he admitted he hasn't been up to par (people are always wanting him to admit fault and here he does), but that he promises the hits will be coming back.. what's not to like about this interview? you guys only read what you want to read..
I didn't ignore it, but it doesn't say the same thing to me that it does to you. To me, it sounds like he's not sure, and buying time (for what, God knows). If it is literally true, then at the least it seems he is catching on considerably slower than several other members of the defense, and that alone is cause for concern.

I'm still trying to get my head around "...as we (?) get more comfortable with my (?) defense." We == team/fans? My == Wade?

You can't get your head around it because you are looking for the worst. Obviously 'we' is the other players on defense and 'my' is Wade.

It's not a direct quote, actually. He was referencing a specific situation -- when you get lined up one on one (basically manned up) with a receiver. He said when you don't have help from a linebacker or another safety it's tough to cover, because you can guess wrong which direction their route is going. In those situations, he said it's tough and "sometimes you just hope they don't throw in your direction." He then said that is why "corners get paid the big bucks."

It makes perfect sense. He's not a corner. And if he's manned up on a receiver he won't be as good as a cover corner.

thank you. leave Roy alone. I'm sure whatever way it is he will find a way to contribute to this team.and lets be honest. when you have Jacque Reeves on our same side. That can leave a lot of guessing

Wasn't there a guy named Roy Williams in the pro bowl last year?
yes he was. he played special teams and very little safety if any at all. even McCarthy(packers head coach) knows he sucks so bad he won't even play him in the probowl.

Wow...that shows a total lack of confidence by Roy. This only further makes me believe that my thoughts that they'll find a way to keep him off the field, on third down passing situations, every single time they come up this year is completely accurate.

I could see them doing something like, on 3rd downs, sliding Henry to FS, Hamlin to SS, and them using their corner depth just to get Roy off the field.

Its a dam shame that we have to burn premium picks on corners and sign thugs to play in the secondary because our $10 million dollar safety has gone soft.

Come on Roy, grow a pair and start making some plays like you used to, dam it.
