"I hope they (offense) do not throw the ball in my direction" Per Roy Williams

Well said Redball.

Also, the part about him "not making big hits since he found God" is also being taken completely out of context.

If you listen to the audio, he's saying that's what critics have been saying about him... that since he's found religion he hasn't been making big hits. But he NEVER says that religion is the reason he isn't making big hits (as many here have suggested in this thread).

What he does say is that because of his relationship with God, he no longer worries about the critics. But he absolutely does NOT say that religion has made him take it easy on the field.

In fact, right after he talks about religion, he says "THE HITS WILL COME."

People, Roy has his problems, but don't distort his words to make it seem worse than it is.

The quote above is a complete out of context quote. Ridiculous what people hear when a person talks. They only hear what they want to hear to support their view.

And I thought he was just being honest about the situation. I think these player really talk candidly with Irvin and I enjoy his interviews.

Roy went on to explain that as a safety, there are certian things the common fan doesn't understand about playing his position.

..that you have a 50/50 chance of being wrong each time that the TE or receiver will cut one way or the other and you can't really cover both options as a safety and you will be guessing wrong half the time and you hope they don't throw the ball your way when you guess wrong.

I think he was also trying to say in the schemes he's asked to play, you have to play the scheme and you can't freelance in coverages and you have to play it a certain way and sometimes, there isn't much you can do.

This was really what he was saying. Completely honest if you ask me.

And when he made the comment about the corners getting the big bucks..he was infering that they are better equipt to deal with handling making the better choice or being able to recover IF they make the wrong decision on the WR as to their coverage.

Which makes sense, since they are further up field and the receiver is always in front of them and they can be looking into the offensive backfield during coverage to make decisions on how to play the WR..inside or outside or close or loose.

I was surprised that he tied his comments about his lack of big hits on his religion. But if you think about it, I can understand it. He hurt Emmitt Smith one time and nearly put him out for the season when Emmitt was playing with the Cards. No matter how you frame that, I didn't like what happened there and I clearly remember RW being very apologetic about it several times.

Then he also injured TO when he was an Iggle with his horsecollar and then did it again with McNabb the next season.

This might be grinding on him from a personal standpoint and he sought answers about it thru his religious beliefs. I think we forget he's a person, not a cold-blooded hired assassin.

Maybe he is concerned that he could permanently injure a player with his aggressiveness and he doesn't want that burden.

I could completely understand that. When he's playing 100%, he's a tough hombre other players don't want to be in his crosshairs.

And maybe he is unhappy with his recent reputation as a dirty player the media and league have tried to paint him as recently and he's just curbed his aggressiveness altogether for all of the above.

This could merely be a phase he has to go thru with his play and reputation and has to balance the two.

I've always like Roy Williams and he's a rock for this defense. All his teammates have always supposed him and never pointed a finger at his play as a problem.

So let's see what happens from here out. I think we'll see a better palyer this year with Campo to handle some mental baggage and do some coverage changes with RW as the season goes on.

Frankly, I thought the defensive secondary did a poor job of making any defensive changes in the secondary as the season wore on.

As a result, the same sort of things broke down from game to game.

Part of that was the injuries to the starting CBs and having to play Reeves all year. That had to place a bunch more pressure on RW to just play the scheme and be in position to cover for the weaker coverages they had to use with Reeves.

RW should be able to take more risks and be more himself using his instincts to make big plays when everybody is healthy again.

We'll see.

Brian Stewart outright admitted Dallas wanted to get Roy off the field more next year in his post-draft interview. Thankfully we only have one more year until his cap figure will be feasible enough to release him. I'm tired of an entire defense having to be schemed around one overpaid player's liabilities. We really need Patrick Watkins to step up in his 3rd year so we'll have a replacement ready in-house.

The fact that he paused, took his time and then said YES when asked if roy would be taken off the field on 3rd downs was pretty telling.

He will probably be very frustrated this year. He is going to be watching alot of football.

You RW haters are reading way too much into this--this is lockerroom talk between two players,--putting RW covering a wideout one-on-one is insane--what safety in the NFL can do that? with a few tweeks and some new players and new coaches the D will be fine. I have maintained for a year that lots of the blame assigned to RW should go to the inside LBs for not covering the middle. If Thomas can go, that's his speciality.

Wonder if 'God' encouraged him to continue with the horsecollaring instead of dishing out hits, too?

Something tells me that still won't end the debate.

And I agree, I want to see Patrick Watkins make a huge push this year. You're up, Slim.

"People will say Roy is really not making any big hits. Ever since I rededicated my life to God, OK, I haven't been making the big hits, but we got further than we ever did when I was living of the world. When I rededicated my life, you know what I'm saying, God showed me that you don't have to live of the world and I will bless you. He has basically overflown my cup. He has shown me so much.

"Please believe the hits will come as we get more comfortable with my defense, with the 3-4 and coach Phillips' way that he wants us to play. Please believe the hits will come. I mean, I'm going to have to get comfortable in this defense."

This is the most confusing garbage I have read.

Is Roy saying that his big hits don't come because he has found God? If he is, then what the hell does the second paragraph mean, considering he is flat-out saying that big hits will come when he adjusts to the new defense. So he uses religion as an excuse for his poor play in one paragraph, and in the next paragraph, he says that it is part of the learning curve of a new defense?

The guy is looking for excuses. He isn't the smartest tool in the shed and the answer reveals his big ego more than anything else.

"I will admit that at times, when I had one-on-one situations and you're head up on a tight end or a receiver that can go left or right, it's tough," he said. "I mean, it's just tough. Sometimes you just hope they don't throw the ball your way, because sometimes you're like, if they go inside, you don't have any help; if they go outside, you don't have any help.

Sounds to me like he is thinking to much. In those split seconds in which he is thinking is exactly the split seconds in which he is getting burnt deep for a touchdown. I think the problem is that he is lacking natural coverage instincts. instead, he is going through in his mind everything that the coaches are trying to drill into him, which maybe making the situation worse, because he reacts slower and thus makes a shame of himself.

TheKey 05-01-2008 10:53 PM
Get off the man's back. Gripe about him all you want for getting burnt, I will even join in, but don't get onto him for changing his playing style after finding God. If that is what he needed to do, then he needed to do it, and im happy for him. Theres more to life (and beyond) than making big hits.

I am a religious man myself but we need to keep things in perspective. Roy Williams isn't getting paid to find God. If he wants to that, he can do that on his own time. He is however getting paid to play football at a high level. He needs to separate the two. Sure he can be a saint off the field, visit the poor and needy, tend to the sick and elderly, visit door to door preaching to gospel...etc. That's all well and good, but when he steps onto the football field, he needs to play the game to his full ability. To do any less would be an insult to the natural ability that God blessed him with.

But if you want to blame someone, don't blame God. Blame Kelly Rowland. Men usually seek God after a life changing event. Roy changed when she dumped him.

He is not saying that. He's saying that's what his critics say about him. His critics have been spouting that for about two years now.

But if you listen to the interview, he is in NO WAY suggesting that finding God has anything to do with his hitting.

This is actually not true. Roy dumped Kelly Rowland. He states among many things that he took some compatibility test that questioned whether he was ready to be married or not.

The fact is, football is not war, but a game and a job. You sign a contract and are expected to play to the level of your capabilitites. Also, one can make big hits, without injuring a person.

Anybody that brings up religion in the picture to justify one's poor play is full of hot air and such excuses have the stench of hypocrisy.

You've got it backwards.

People have been blaming Roy's religion for years to explain his "lack of big hits."

Roy has never used that as an excuse or explanation, but I'm sure he's heard others say those things, and I'm sure it burns him up.

In this interview, he's doing the exact opposite of what y'all are accusing him of doing. He's not excusing his play because of his religion... he's calling out the critics who are drawing that link.

Maybe he could have worded it more clearly, but it's obvious to me that's what he's saying.

C'mon, do you really believe this?

I'm surprised that a lot of people here, whose opinions I normally respect, are buying into this line of thinking.

Criticize his play all you want. But you guys are chasing after a red-herring with this religion angle.

It is amazing how Roy has gone for being one of the most popular Cowboys to one of the most hated in a short time. I use to be among those that loved to watch him play, but sadly he has turned soft. I want a safety that is trying to knock someones block off, oppenents use to drop a lot of balls over the middle fearing for their lives, now he is targeted and picked on constantly.

How long does it take you to get familiar with Wade's system, one year later he is still saying he needs to adjust to Wade? Give me a break, enough with the excuses either go out there and DO YOUR JOB or retire.

I really hope this is his last year in Dallas!
